Rein offers update on UT3 360 News

Xbox 360 News by Ellie Gibson

7 April, 2008

Epic Games boss Mark Rein has assured those eagerly awaiting the Xbox 360 version of Unreal Tournament 3 that it's looking good and will be playable soon.

In a post on the Epic forums he wrote, "We don’t have a particular release date yet but we’re going to be playing it with some members of the press in two weeks at Midway’s next Gamers Day in Las Vegas.

"Should be fun," Rein added. "The game is coming along really nicely."

The PS3 version of UT3 was released last year on PC, and in February on PS3. Speaking to Eurogamer back in November Rein said the delay to the Xbox 360 game was due to an issue with mods. He explained, "We can release any mods we want on PS3 because it's an open system, whereas Xbox Live is a closed system."

While you're waiting, you could always read our reviews of the PC and PS3 versions.

Had a blast on the PS3 version the other day.
Looks pretty, but will get bored of it quickly I think.

Will probably give the 360 version some time when it eventually pops out.

Bought UT3 for PS3 on US-import in december and still play it fequently. Fast and fun to play... very twitch-based and arcade'ish :)

Maybe not the best online FPS but a good arcade alternative to games like R:FoM, COD4 and Halo.

Good that 360 owner will be able to play it soon also ;)

If thats the case, why don't other companies take advantage of it? It seems to me that the companies are really lazy when PS3 is concerned.

The first dev that produces an online FPS that hosts cross platform matches on its servers is going to make a bloody fortune!! UT would have been the ideal game for this, why has no-one thought of this idea????

Live is a closed network. No chance of it ever interacting with PSN.

I'm sure that people have thought of it, but it requires cooperation between MS and Sony which is probably fraught with obstacles.

Also, UT3 supports mouse/keyboard and mods on PS3, but not on 360, which would make it a slightly uneven playing field.

I can't help thinking that UT3 will be a crippled game on the 360 with no optional mouse and keyboard support, not to mention how Epic plan on implementing the user mods in the game which work so well in the PS3 and PC versions. I love the PS3 version, it's fast, dumb and a lot of fun, but the longer the 360 version is delayed, the less likely it is that it'll sell, especially as that platform isn't short of quality FPSs. I heard the PS3 and PC versions of this game didn't sell very well which doesn't bode well for the 360 version really...

Not really. I haven't noticed any advantage for mouse/keyboard players in UT3. Good players beat bad player no matter what input method they are useing - UT3 seems very ballanced that way. And even if there was a problem/limitation here, you can still filter out mouse/keyboard servers/players.

But if I was possible, I would still perfer they avoided cross-platform online play for any platform/game - never understod why some people want it if there are players and server enough online.

I was going to buy it on the PS3 (haven't got around to it yet), but I may wait for the 360 version now. I'm not sure, I'll see if the PS3 version drops in price.

I you own both a PS3 and 360 I can't see a reason for waiting for the 360 version... unless the 360 version have no-press-key-for-voice-chat which is annoying in the PS3 version to be honest.

Does anybody really care about this anymore, the whole game has a huge "been there done that" feel to it anyway.

I can't see this doing very well on the 360, you never know though, EPIC stuff tends to sell no matter what.

Theres a trick for the voice on PS3.

Hold right in game on the D-Pad to open the comms then push pause. Release the right button and unpause..

Hopefully you will now have the channel open all the damn time!

That's a load of rubbish! The X360 version has been ready well before the PS3 version and probably around the same time as the PC version...and I'm a PlayStation fan!

It's just their timed exclusive deal with Sony and the fact that they couldn't get it working properly before Xmas that delayed the whole thing and had a ripple effect on the X360 release date.

Epic admitted as much at that time anyway...I just wish I'd kept the link to the story!

There may be some thruth to that, however it is likely that when the deal with Sony was finalized, whatever work was outstanding on the 360 version was more than likely put to one side for the time being to concentrate on the PC and PS3 versions. Also, I remember reading that Epic were still in discussion with MS on how they would be able to implement user modded content on Xbox Live, so that may be taking up time and dev effort as well.

Have you considered that the entire audience for the game have been busy playing Halo 3 and CoD4 on their 360s?

It could sell by the ton considering the 360's installed base.

Who really plays FPSs on the PS3? Just those with nothing else to play on.

They're struggling to work with M$ to implement an open mod system. Yes the game worked ages ago, but M$ wont allow any mod to be used with the game.

Huh?

Anyway, I'm hoping this'll be good. Some of the maps look brilliant.

Loved UC when it launched Live on the old Xbox, and am hoping it'll bring back some happy memories. Iused to spend nearly all my time hosting no auto-aim Instagib matches, so if it still has those mutators I'll be well chuffed :)

Though if it suffers from the minor lag that Halo and CoD4 has, which gives a clear advantage to our American neighbours, then I probably won't bother with it for long. Would be nice to have to option to play against local countries only if minimising transatlantic lag is impossible.
