RedLynx details Trials HD's BIG Pack

Levels! Skill games! Editor objects! Patch.

RedLynx has pulled back the curtain and exposed the now dated and priced Trials HD BIG Pack downloadable add-on.

Inside are 23 new courses to hop around on and they focus on the medium and hard tiers - the "sweet spot", the developer told us. They are split into 12 medium, 9 hard and 2 extreme.

Each has been built to focus on the new objects added to the editor. On our visit to Finland to visit RedLynx we saw a space-themed level that simulated zero-gravity by using the new wind-gust object. We were shown another level where players must stay atop a moving monster truck, which highlighted the new rolling car model.

There's even one map that looks nothing like the normal Trials HD game. It's called 1 Bit Trip and the camera has been zoomed out and placed side-on to give a retro, 2D feel. The colours are green and platforms are cast in silhouette, adding an element of surprise to what you're riding over. It's a very effective demonstration of what's possible in the editor.

Another map has you riding through (another new editor component) air vents on the Donkey bike, and yet another map had you completing enormous loop-the-loops and collecting boost power-ups to fling you high into the air.

There are five new tournaments to compete in that cobble those new maps together.

Skill games have also expanded to welcome 12 new challenges. One of those that we played saw our motorbike semi-fixed to the back of a car (in a wooden cage), the idea being to roll down a ramp and launch into the air and collect strategically placed boosters to see how high you and the car can get.

Most of the other new skill games add variation to what we already know, such as the driver bail-out launch. There's even a gigantic pinball-themed game.

At the heart of everything are those 50 new objects in the track editor. These include rocket turbines, motors, rotating platforms, piston-like oil drums and all of those mentioned above. While the DLC may introduce the new toys, the hope is that the community will latch-on and run with them for months.

There are also three new Achievements totalling 50 gamerpoints on offer. Do pop into our Trials HD - BIG Pack DLC gallery for a first batch of screenshots.

RedLynx will also release a title update for Trials HD alongside the BIG Pack DLC on 23rd December.

This makes the Ultimate Endurance tournament easier and the Marathon Achievement more obtainable. The Down the Stairs Skill Game has been fixed to remove the glitch and add better control of the tumbling rider.

Corrupted Leaderboard scores have been addressed and will be wiped now and mechanically in the future, and a host of minor bugs have been squashed across the board.

Last but not least, RedLynx has doubled the amount of tracks you can save on your hard-drive or memory card.

To reiterate: the Trials HD BIG Pack will be released on Xbox Live on 23rd December and cost 400 Microsoft Points (£4.80/€9.60).

Is Trials HD your Game of the Year 2009? Well go and vote for it then!

  • thenastypasty #2 2 years ago

400MSP for 23 new tracks is a steal:-)
  • phoopipe #3 2 years ago

Only two extremes is a bit of kick in the balls but it's still one hell of a foooking bargain.
  • SpankmasterC #4 2 years ago

    400 MSP is +- 5 euro's right, not 10?
  • wizlon #5 2 years ago

Would have preferred more tracks over the skill games, but hey ho, it'll still be awesome so it's all good.
  • TheSaint #6 2 years ago

Are you still only able to see custom tracks made by people on your friends list?
  • OllyJ #7 2 years ago

this is all super but...track sharing? the editor is nearly redundant because there is no way to share and rate!
  • phoopipe #8 2 years ago

    @theSaint

Yes that will always be the case sadly, something to do with the cost of servers and arcade constraints according to the devs.
  • JahB #9 2 years ago

talk about value for money, day 1 purchase.
  • estoo #10 2 years ago

Game of the year indeed. Well, it gets my vote anyway.

The thing is, implementing a track sharing feature like a central server is more of a headache than it appears. By doing that then all sorts of certification issues come into play, at least as far as I know. Keeping it peer-to-peer, however laborious, means there's no slow-down in terms of what's made and what can be shared.

    I think.

I don't get what they could have done to make Marathon Achievement easier if it's still 0 fails?
  • Roland_D11 #13 2 years ago

@SpankmasterC Yeah, it is about 5 €, the exchange rate is slightly wrong in the article (£4.80 convert to €9,60? When do you live?!? ;-) ) .
  • OllyJ #14 2 years ago

I've no doubt that implementing it would be difficult and you'd have a whole load of issues, but surely this is Live Arcades flagship title? It's screaming out for it, we pay for Live don't forget in which case I feel like it's less feasible to make excuses.

Also I believe N+has level sharing so it can be done.

Red Lynx, just do it, it'll lengthen the life of the game massively

    @ jay
+ Ultimate Endurance tournament has been made easier. The close to impossible Marathon achievement is now possible for much wider audience. New tournament has only beginner, easy and medium tracks.

Still imagine its going to be tricky.

    The track sharing
"It's just that we do not have a server to allow this, storage space to store the tracks, and we do not have a system to search and rate tracks, etc, etc. If the project had much higher budget, and we had more coders we would have implemented a sophisticated global track sharing system to the game and built our own game server network for it".
    Shame :(

"On our visit to Finland to visit RedLynx"

    yuck!
  • asphaltcowboy #17 2 years ago

Awesome! Definite purchase! They really need to sort out the track sharing though!
  • spidermanalf #18 2 years ago

Great. We had all the family coming round for christmas dinner. Just spoke to the wife and its too late to cancel!

Goddamit! It will eat into my Trials time!
  • Gartt #19 2 years ago

    Get in!
Im glad to see a couple more extreme tracks to get my teeth into. Although I still havent 0 faulted any of the current extreme tracks :(
  • toythatkills #20 2 years ago

"Also I believe N+has level sharing so it can be done."

It doesn't. Well, it kind of does, it's just about comparable to the level sharing in Trials HD as it is.

Are they really just removing the hard tracks from ultimate endurance? That's pathetic if so. Surely the achievement will be faaaaar too easy now. At least compared to how it was.
  • OllyJ #21 2 years ago

    @Toythatkills

Fair enough, I'm mistaken. I still think it does kind of suck though, not massively on Red Lynx's side as I do understand how hard the things are to retrofit, but more on MS, We all pay Live subs and I still don't really see the benefit, surely some of our cash could go towards things like setting up servers etc.

I just love the Editor but to know only 5-6 people are going to try my track it doesn't "Incentivise" me to stick with it.
  • OldK1ngCole #22 2 years ago

Now thats what I call a DLC pack. If only all devs would follow this example there would be alot more happy gamers in the world.
  • stepneg #23 2 years ago

Others should take note of the price, 400MSP for this is a steal, instant buy for me.
  • OldK1ngCole #24 2 years ago

    @ OllyJ

Are you a member of our Trails HD group? We've created a sock account that can be used for creating maps, that way anyone who has the sock account added to their Xbox Live friend list can access your fabolous creations.

Flock! has universal level sharing as well, just to add that obviously it's possibly on Arcade games. Sure, Capcom is a bigger company, but Trails HD has sell so much more copies, they should be able to afford a server for that feature by now.
  • DrW #26 2 years ago

I don't think it's just the logistics of sharing out the levels via a server; I think a major part of the problem is that you'd have to have all the levels vetted, to remove the 90% that just consist of giant cocks made out of girders, and that needs staff devoted to it. Flock would probably get away without having vetting, as you're more limited in what you can make.
