Red Dead Redemption shipments hit 5 million
Plus: 17 million GTA IV discs now shifted.
Just a few weeks after the game's release, Take-Two has announced that more than 5 million copies of Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption have now been shipped.
RDR was released in the US on 18th May and hit Europe three days later. The announcement came as part of the publisher's latest financial report.
"RDR was successful because it does not involve aliens, or army men, and was a new franchise," said chairman Strauss Zelnick (as reported by VG247). "It was successful because it was not a reiteration of an old franchise."
And RDR isn't the only Rockstar game pulling in the big bucks for Take-Two. More than 17 million copies of Grand Theft Auto IV have now been sold around the globe, two years after release.
So can we expect our first sneak peak at GTA V in LA next week? No, in short - Take-Two confirmed that Rockstar won't be putting an appearance in at E3, as announced previously.

RDR is a great game that has made wonderful use of its monster budget. With this game, R* have ascended the genre they put on the map.
You know, I read a statement a while back from R* that said somethign along the lines of only them being able to move this genre forward. I'm inclined to believe this now.
As for GTAIV well, considering this was the most dramatic shift for sandbox I'm not surprised, it's defiitely one of the best games I've played, along with the episodes, the exude quality and are extremely good fun to play.

My word, what insight this chap has, no wonder he's the chairman, earning fortunes every year! No games featuring aliens or 'army men' or 'old' IPs are successful these days. The rest of us have been completely hoodwinked into thinking franchises like MW and Halo continue to sell tens of millions year after year, but not this sharp knife!
RDR was a great hit precisely because he found the truth where others dared not look, and not at all because it was a beautifully-realised, totally immersive gameworld, had a lovingly-crafted story, drew upon huge affection for the Western that had hitherto been untapped this-gen, etc etc.
This man deserves a pay rise, or at the very least the Nobel Prize.

Hopefully with the success of the DLC disk on PS3, will hopefully mean no further GTA exclusive DLC releases. Will have to see at E3 if that is actually the case though
