Red Dead Redemption Hands On

Xbox 360 PlayStation 3 Hands On by Johnny Minkley

28 January, 2010

Page 1 of 4. Page 2 ->

It's a classic Rockstar moment. The nocturnal calm is shattered by the shrieks of a prostitute bursting out of a saloon as a man chases her down and assaults her in the street. I move swiftly to her aid but, still acquainting myself with the controls, succeed only in kicking her in the face as she writhes helplessly on the ground.

The man flees back inside as the girl scrambles to her feet and away. I give chase to the attacker, drawing a rifle as he cowers behind the bar blind-firing. A moment later I have him clean in my sights by the open backdoor and unload a round. Which sails past his torso, through the door, over the street and into the stomach of a girl 20 yards away, who drops to her knees with a blood-curdling scream. The same girl I'd been trying to save. There are belly laughs and there are belly laughs.

It's one of those sudden, unexpected climaxes of bloody action, tinged with darkly comic absurdity, that have become a trademark of Rockstar's openworld exploits. Pigeonholing Red Dead Redemption as 'GTA Wild West' is a seductively neat but ultimately lazy option, handy for journalists seeking to articulate the concept with a tabloid flourish, but one that undermines what is - if not in essential mechanics and structure - in tone, ambition, scope and potential very much its own beast.

The heritage and influence of Grand Theft Auto are important because through its all-conquering series Rockstar has created then refined a genre, while becoming a master at realising the dramatic potential of the medium.

Red Dead Redemption is, the publisher often states, the fulfilment of a dream that began with picking up the half-finished Revolver from Capcom, acquiring the developer, Angel Studios, and renaming it Rockstar San Diego - to create the great videogame western.

'Red Dead Redemption' Screenshot 1

Hands-off demos have impressed the leather chaps off us so far, but earlier this week Rockstar invited us over to its London HQ to climb into the saddle ourselves.

First, though, a Rockstar rep gives us an updated snapshot of the project and a taste of what's in store. We start on a map screen, slowly zooming out for effect to reveal the full scale of the gameworld. The huge expanse of land is bisected by a river, with the Americas to the north and Mexico to the south, split into three distinct territories: New Austin, West Elizabeth and Nuevo Paraiso.

Redemption is the largest openworld game Rockstar has made. Size in itself is not an unalloyed good, as those overwhelmed by the vast San Andreas would testify; but an unexplored, unknown wilderness is the point here. Set at the turn of the 20th century, the tension between the lawless old west and the rapid expansion of government and the rule of law is central both on the narrative and the character of protagonist John Marston, torn between his own outlaw past and second-chance family life.

The proto-FBI Justice Department demands Marston help them bring to justice his former gang. His family threatened with execution, he's left with little option but to comply, loyal only to himself as he works with whomever and whatever it takes to protect his wife and child.

First off: This game looks and sounds amazing!!!

But, I fear that it will not make its April release date, and will be pushed back until "The Fall", especially given the rumours surrounding Rockstar San Diego and the atmosphere in which this game was developed.

Also, I wonder if the current consoles can really handle this! Those screenshots are pure "bullshots", as there is no way in hell the game looks that good! Will the gunplay be marred by a choppy framerate and shitty cover mechanics? Will it have terrrible aliasing? Will it run at a sub-HD resolution?

Finally, I fear that this could be another example of a game that enjoys significant performance advantage on the Xbox 360 over the PS3, and there is no word of a PC version coming out at all...

I don't care if it's delayed as long as they fix the bugs and framerate. This is a potential GOTY for sure.

EDIT: Actually they should keep the suicidal horses for the sake of lolz.

Really looking forward to this.

Rockstar, if you're reading this, PLEASE, put in an early automobile as an easter egg/surprise. An Oldsmobile Curved Dash or similar, to putt-putt-putt around in for giggles.

Said it before, it really sounds like the best game ever.

Now please make a PC version so I can actually play it (and play it without the terrible auto-aim of GTAIV with a pad). :p

Really cant wait for this game, but i also have to admit i will be surprised by a April 30 release date, though its a massive team, thats not too long till it will go gold, and frame rate issues and rough edges are not going to get removed in that timeframe....

Sounds like a great game, :)

Wow, got my eye on this! Apologies if I missed it in the article but the one thing I'm looking for in an open world game (especially from Rockstar) is tight controls. Other games in the genre are getting this right nowadays and I always feel like the characters, camera and vehicles in GTA aren't quite as fast or responsive as my fingers are working.

fix the framerate. fix the framerate! lower the polycount and the texture size if needed but fix the frameraaaaaaate!!
why is it that by today standards screen tearing and framerate drops are accepted as long as the graphics have "oooh, shiny!" levels?

by the way, I would not worry about the pc version. it's gonna come out. eventually.

BTW I think Nick Cave's doing the music, which based on the score he did for 'The Assassination of Jesse James...' is an inspired choice.

I don't remember R* announcing a definate release date, like they have with this and then missing it.

They said fall for GTA4 then moved it, but they've said 27th (I think) April. It will happen.

And who cares if the PS3 version is inferior. Not me.

"I shoot the cougar and slice off its settee cover. And then do the same to my horse. It's what she would've wanted."

OK, that made me laugh out loud like a geek. I don't like that.

Oh, and please do as you usually do with the GTA-series, Rockstar! Release it on the PC too, albeit six months later. I don't mind the delay as long as I get to play it!

Not to mention the score (and screenplay) he did for The Proposition. If they're using his music I hope they're also using some of the tone and style of that movie.

here the soundtrack is entirely original (and Rockstar coyly teases that an announcement about the composer will come).

This has to be Morricone. Anybody other than Morricone would not be worth teasing.

The "You seem to have misplaced your horse, silly boy" mechanic does indeed sound welcome. Well done R*.

A bit more about the controls would have been nice. How does shooting handle if you aren't using the dead eye mechanic? The preview seemed to suggest that JM resorted to it under pressue, which doesn't sound promising on the face of it.

GTA combat mechanics have always ranged between bloody awful and just about adequate, so any comparison with the cover system of GTA 4 does not fill me with joy one little bit. I started playing Libery City chapters (or whatever it is called) recently, and I'd forgotten how damn annoying it is repeating a mission becasue the crappy controls scuppered what should have been quite basic actions.
