Red Dead leads US half-year sales

Rockstar may grin, but Nintendo guffaws.

The best selling game in the US from January to June was Red Dead Redemption, according to new NPD numbers.

In that time, Rockstar's Western has sold nearly 2.5m units.

Combined PS3 and Xbox 360 sales of Red Dead Redemption held off tenacious competition from New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which unsurprisingly dominated the individual platform chart.

Activision's record-breaking Modern Warfare 2 (released in 2009) took third place, followed by rival Battlefield: Bad Company 2 in fourth. Let's see EA twist those numbers.

Wii Fit Plus rounded out the top five.

In the individual platform sales chart, games for Nintendo platforms dominated seven of the 10 places. NSMBWii was first, Pokemon SoulSilver second, Red Dead Redemption third, God of War III fourth and Wii Fit Plus fifth.

From there, Wii Sports Resort was sixth, Pokemon HeartGold seventh, Modern Warfare 2 (360) eighth, Just Dance ninth and Super Mario Galaxy 2 10th.

So, no Final Fantasy XIII, no Mass Effect 2, no Heavy Rain and no Super Street Fighter IV.

    God of war II is fourth still after all these years? It is a good game but damn. I didn't realise it's doing that well.

    God Of War III in fourth in the individual format chart is amazing!!

    It even outsold RDR on PS3, well done Sony Santa Monica.

    Red Dead Redemption and Mass Effect 2 have been the two stand-out games for me this year by quite a margin. If only every game could be as good as those two.

    I'm surprised that Mass Effect 2 wasn't in the top ten though as it was available on two formats, 360 and PC (I bought both versions!).

    Also shouldn't that be God of War III, EG, not God of War II? ;)

    Does NPD include DD sales yet? If not, that might explain the lack of ME2 because I reckon that a good chunk of the PC copies were sold over Steam and the like.

    Ace that's that out the way - time to announce a PC version!

    I think if we discounted the Wii titles from the sales, we would have seen much more 'hardcore' titles up there, such as ME2 and Heavy Rain, as it would have been 5 or more years ago, but that is not disrespectful to Wii.

    Just having Wii on market changes the game, but we are grateful that worthy titles such as Super Mario Bro to represent Wii, just dont talk to me about that Dance or similar guff!

    Paddy u rent boy. Remove bill gates balls from your mouth for just 5 minutes and go play the game. Then make judgement. Does it matter that GOW3 isn't in top spot. Does it fuck. It's awesome. Does it matter that mass effect 2 isn't in top spot. No. It's fuckin awesome. Sales charts are put out for dick lickers like you to masturbate over. I wouldn't give shit if GOW 3 sold one copy. I would still of bought it. Now go back to pleasuring Bill.

    wow, the first 4 games are actually proper good video games. great to see that wallets still vote for quality instead of "just dance".

    @heretostay
    do yourself a favor, stop thinking and get that game. you won't regret it.

    I'm surpirsed ME2 didnt make the chart. It's easily the best game this year in my opinion. I would be interested to know the UK charts but i expect they will be equally depressing with the likes of just dance at the top or something.

    I think is saying that massive open world (almost MMO like) games are what people want.
  • Nighthawk_08 #15 2 years ago

    Paddy go boil ur head. Microsoft and Sony are doing just fine, u crazy deluded fuck wit. Just stop writing on this forum and go play some games. Stop worrying about the sales of games and just fuckin play some. In fact that's wat I'm gonna do right now. Peace u Jeb end

    @heretostay

    Dont buy it - at least if you didnt like GTA IV. It really is the same game. With horses and loads of wolves. I went with the hype - the game is just way overrated.

    "It totally matters how much games sell. Don't be so stupid. If GOWIII sold 1 copy there would never be another made.

    The fact it performed so poorly means that Sony would more likely be unwilling to make a massive investment in GOW4. Sony haven't had even one massive seller this Gen. Not one. MS are doing better, but not much better. They however are coming from an inferior position, Sony are not. If a business is not growing, it's dying."

    GoW III sold 1 million copies in the first month in the US alone. It should have sold at least 2 million globally by now, which would be enough to recoup the game's $44 milion budget, and would put it roughly on par with GoW II and GoW. So while the sequel didn't blow away expectations, iit didn't fall much below them either.
