RB2 works with GHWT, RR peripherals
But only on PS3 for the moment.
Harmonix has patched Rock Band 2 on PS3 to support Guitar Hero World Tour and Rock Revolution peripherals.
An Xbox 360 update is "forthcoming", according to the Rock Band forum.
"Consumers should not be forced to buy separate controllers for each game. Rock Band peripherals should be compatible with other music games - even those of our competitors," said the developer.
"We are extremely excited that consumers can finally use the peripherals of their choice with their games on the PS3, and that they no longer need to buy multiple guitars or drums."
There's a few other bug fixes in the PS3 patch, and full notes can be found on the Rock Band forum.
Previously, both Sony and Microsoft have aired plans to make instruments from Guitar Hero World Tour, Rock Band 2 and Rock Revolution cross-compatible on their respective formats.

EDIT: It is indeed the case. Confusing wording on the part of Harmonix when talking about a 360 patch.

Actually, EG isn't too blame here, the Harmonix forum announcement implied the 360 has compatibility problems.
I assure you, however, that it doesn't, been using the GHWT drums on Rb1 since the GH launch! (and on Rb2 since that was released) (on my 360)

From what I've heard, the US don't have the same issues as us.
Good news about RB2 working with GHWT instruments for PS3 though, now all I have to do is wait til next year before the 'exclusivity' deal ends!!!!

bought Rb1 with 'instruments' at lunch
sold instruments, kept game.
bought GH:WT bundle (with all instruments)
bought RB2
imported RB1 songs onto RB2
sold rb1 disc.
So I have Rb1, 2 and GH:WT with the GH 'instruments'.
Best combo imo.

The guitar is good but in fact the drums aren't as good an option as I first thought they might be. Despite the initial 'oo' factor of the cymbals, the GHWT drumkit is actually less flexible as a RB kit than you might think. Not only does the crash cymbal not work, but a fixed 1 snare/2 toms/2 cymbals setup makes a lot of charts less interesting, because of the inability to manage open hi-hat vs closed hihat, and 3-tom combos. The RB drumset manages this by 'floating' the configuration of the 4 pads, but this isn't possible when you fix the function of all 5 pads.

This actually makes some drum charts at Hard and Expert on GHWT less authentic than in RB, which is not what I (or probably most people) intuitively expected.
