Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction Reader Review
The first in a new trilogy (hopefully) of Ratchet & Clank games introducing the Cragmite Emperor as the villain.
There's been a lot written about the visuals of the game saying that they are rivaling the quality of Pixar movies, on the visual that's not quite true but it is also missing the point. The thing that it is rivaling Pixar movies with is in the quite good storyline with the excellent storytelling and voice acting. People may say Heavenly Sword or some other game impresses but compared it to the delivery of these guys who make it feel like this game is just as good as the best Pixar movies and you'll quickly see what really good voice acting adds to a game.
Lombax this Lombax that.
Ratchet is a Lombax, they saved the galaxy once. There's intrigue there. You see.
The game is quite simple in structure, you'll travel from planet to planet at first fleeing from the Emperor and soon hunting for a secret Lombax device. You travel through lava planets, ice planets, a tricky gravity mixed meteor, different city landscapes and some beautiful lush green planets of various kinds. The primary linear structure of the game however does not hinder as the game allows you to travel back to the planets you've previously visited to find secrets and play challenges (including the quite fun gladiator arena on the Imperial planet) and also hunt skill points (this is probably one of the only things I didn't bother with).
The great thing about the game is the focus on unrelentless fun, Insomniac has taken some of the best gadgets and ideas from their previous games and put them in the game and they've also added some new weapons and gadgets for a massive package of things to play around with. And that's what you're supposed to do, they don't hesitate giving you more toys than you'd ever need just to let you play with them. The devices range from my favourite Mr. Zurkon to the Groovitron (making most enemies dancing machines) and the Transmorpher (turning them into penguins). The weapons are as diverse as the standard Omni-Wrench to the Plasma Beast, Nano-Swarmers and the cool Razor Claws. And keeping with their history they'll let you upgrade the weapons to deal more damage and also to buy addons to them to deal even more damage and get more ammunition and so on.
This is one of the first games in quite some time where I've been hunting for secrets actively, as each secret extended the game and gave me a bonus. The primary golden bolts that you receive unlock additional skins and lets you play as some of the other characters and the kid who got his wish through the Wish foundation. My favourite is one of the senile old robots. The other thing you'll get from finding secrets is the super powerful RYNO IV weapon and Insomniac understood that there's no point in making a weapon that's extremely hard to find unless you make it UBER-POWERFUL so they did.
That's why this is great.
