Ratchet & Clank Special Edition unveiled News

PlayStation 3 News by Ellie Gibson

7 October, 2009

Sony has revealed that a Collector's Edition of Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time will be released in Europe.

As reported on the European PlayStation blog, it'll come dressed in a special fold-out package with a crazy 3D cover.

You'll also get an artwork book full of concept images picked by Insomniac and a voucher for use on PSN. This will allow you to download the Discovery Package and visit Insomniac Moon, a special level based on the layout of the studio's offices which is packed with extra content.

The Collector's Edition will be available exclusively at GAME in the UK. A release date for Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time has yet to be announced.

I hate it when special editions are exclusive to one company. It means there's no chance of picking one up for a decent price. GAME are asking £49.99 for it, which is just too much. The "artbook" will probably be a thin leaflet-like thing too if the one that came with inFamous is anything to go by.

The only thing I want from a special edition is a steelbox case, anything else is superfluous and I hate digipak sleeves as they eventually get tatty. I can't see anything here that sways me away from my original standard edition pre-order which doesn't cost £10 extra.

IMO, these special editions are seldom special in the first place, just a collection of cheap, tacky extras thrown in that cost pittance to produce but which publishers can use as an excuse to charge customers an extra £5/£10+ for.

Thanks Aretak.
The most important thing about the story is the price and I have to come to the comments section to get it

Can anyone name any good special editions of games? Ones that were actually worth it?

I LOVE Ratchet & Clank, but I'm not paying £49.99 when I'll be able to get the normal copy of the game for less than £35 elsewhere. GAME exclusives really suck.

Annoyingly, if you look at the PS blog then you'll see that in most of the other EU countries the Special Edition is "available everywhere", so they'll probably get reasonable prices. I'd happily pay £5 more for this nice box and stuff but GAME aren't getting £50 from me for this.

Worth bearing in mind that Insomniac have said that all the pre-order bonuses for this game will "eventually" be available to everyone - and I'm sure the Insomniac Moon won't cost £15...

There's a photo of this 'special edition' on the EU blog post linked in the article. The 'art book' is a pamphlet, little bigger than your typical PS3 game instruction manual. And the DLC will probably be available for everyone relatively soon. This is abotu the least special special edition I can think of.

Much better to order the game at standard price from Play and get three bits of DLC for free.

Day 1 buy for me. I think the value of CE's,SE's and UCE's are all reletive. If you think they are worth the price and you are a huge fan willing to pay the price then the price tag almost doeasn't matter, since it will be a day 1 buy for you anyways.

I managed to pinch me a Sprcial Edtion Tin Lunchbox version of Fallout 3 for £19.99 @ Shopto.net. Its pretty good value at that price. But not the RRP.
