Randomly selected European gamers to receive US MotorStorm 2 demo News

PlayStation 3 News by Tom Bramwell

5 September, 2008

Randomly selected European PlayStation 3 owners will be able to get their hands on an upcoming demo of MotorStorm: Pacific Rift previously thought to be exclusive to US gamers who bought an episode of PSN show Qore.

Next Thursday the demo will be made available to US gamers who have paid for Episode 4 for the Qore show (USD 2.99), but Sony has said that a number of PSN users on this side of the Atlantic will be emailed a voucher code to access the demo as well.

The demo is thought to include a single track from the game's Air Zone, with support for single-player and two-player split-screen racing.

Sony has already said that the demo will be made available for free a few days before the game's US release. Sony UK has told Eurogamer that this will also be the case in Europe.

For more on the game, check out our MotorStorm: Pacific Rift hands-on preview and the MotorStorm: Pacific Rift Eurogamer TV Show, in which we journey to Evolution Studios and walk around and that.

Update, 2.42pm: Sony has told us that MotorStorm: Pacific Rift is not down for release in the US on 7th October after all, and should be out in November.

Que? It's a demo Sony not a Beta, controlling a demo seems a little weird.

Its just for publicity isn't it. Its like making free maps available to certain players earlier than others.

It does seem weird. If I got one I wouldn't even use it, I don't like Motorstorm one bit.

Guess it's so Sony can justify people buying Qore in the US.

The demo comes out early for QORE's a few in the UK (so we don't pull the SONY HATE THE UK thing)... with the full demo coming out further down the line.

Really? As far as I would assume it would play practically identical to the original, except with a new car, more varied environments and (hopefully) a more refined interface.

Hello Widge.

My thoughts EXACTLY. I was well disappointed with the demo for that exact reason. Why do developers think that we need associated joypad Olympics with simple game mechanics?!

Looking forward to Pacific Rift. My only gripe is that it seems too similar to the original.

If they
Fix the dog slow loading, vehicle selection.
Make the different vehicles within a class actually behave and perform differently.
Fix the cheating bastard AI wihich turns suicidal in later stages of the original.

... then I'll be buying this.

For some reason, MS reminds me of Star Wars Pod Racer... no flashy tricks, just race and bump. Loads of enjoyment from a simple mechanic!

What a stroke of marketing genius.

"We need to sell our product to as many people as possible!"

"Quick, let's make the us gamers pay for the demo and limit the amount of people in europe who can play our demo!"

I own the 60gb launch console, been an active user of the European psn, and the US one. So that probably means I won't get the demo in the same way I didn't get the home beta.

I'm sure a movie I saw said this exact issue had been addressed. Not sure about the rest, though I believe the AI has had a good seeing to as well.

I take it people missed the part about this being an advance of the demo and it will be available to all in the near future? Thats why people pay for Qore, for advance stuff? And as we don't get it, we get random advance to stop the moaners.

Christ, its like this is the first system where one tier of people get the demos in advance of another tier or something.

It just seems to be another casualty of nu-metal style spelling that has invaded modern life. Putting numbers in words that describe the same number is another facet of this new plague.

I know we get it in the end, but wtf is the point of this? The demo is meant to help sell the game. Trying to build excitement for a demo let alone the game, by holding it back, just pisses people off.

*edit* And if you ever logged into PSN, even once, you aren't getting shit. They do it to entice people who don't shop already via PSN to spend money.

Bizarre situation regarding the demo there. Can't see why they dont just release it properly.

Anyway, regarding MS vs. Pure. They are completely different genres so comparisions are a bit redundant.

Pure is not really about racing, it's about tricking whilst getting rediculous air. Great fun if you like the SSX series.

Motorstorm is balls-out hang-on-if-you-dare offroading. Great fun if you like... well, it's just plain great fun!

Pacific rift doesnt seem to have messed with the formula, just added little bits and pieces and hopefully streamlined the interface and added a little depth to the career mode. Should be sweet.

kangarootoo: my source is a person in the industry who has played the game in an unfinished state, I don't think he was really supposed to talk about it, and I guess I wasn't supposed to mention it either. Anyway, the problem was that in order to achieve four-way split-screen gameplay, too many sacrifices had to be made, both on the graphics side and on the layout/detail of the tracks. I hope he was wrong and that the game will be polished out of these problems of course, as I rather liked the original and would like to play rift as well if it is any good. I'm just not holding my breath, and I wont go out of my way to secure this demo either, expectations having been significantly lowered.

The situation looks like a middle ground. We don't have the Qore stuff here in Europe - it's a silly idea anyway. They can't just give us the demo here cos that would piss off the US, they can't not give it out in some form as that would piss off Europe. So we get random selection able to get. Presumably they just pick names out a hat? Cunning idea to sign up as many email addresses as you have as PSN id's then and up your chances? :)

I can wait until the demo just before release I think.

never enjoyed motorstorm, it was too hard, long loading times, long reset on track times, few good music tracks, lacked tightness in handling and kept coming off as a tech demo.

Shame that I can't sell it for a good price since nearly everyone has it....

Now the Pure demo, that was more fun in 5min than I had in all of Motorstorm, unless the above faults are fixed, i won't be buying
