Virtual Console Roundup Review

Shinobi 3, Shining Force, Dynamite Headdy and Drop Off.

Version tested: Wii

It's another good week to be a Wii-owning Megadrive fan, as three of this week's four new VC titles hail from Sega's sleek black beast. And, for once, it's a solid line-up of good games, across a decent spread of genres.

Shinobi III

  • Platform: Megadrive
  • Wii Points: 800
  • In Real Money: £5.60 (8 Euros)

This makes a nice change. While many games debut on the VC in their earliest incarnation, leaving fans to wonder when their preferred sequel will make an appearance, the mighty Shinobi arrives on the system in its finest version.

It's not the first ninja platform adventure to make an appearance - the decent-but-obscure Ninja Spirit is already available - and nor is the VC short of side-scrolling hack and slash titles. Even so, Shinobi III (which, in typical Japanese fashion, was actually the seventh Shinobi game to be released) is still noticeably better than its rivals.

Slick visuals and intuitive gameplay lure you in, and retro wimps will be pleased to learn that the difficulty curve is relatively tame for a game of this genre and vintage. OK, the boss fights can be tough, but you won't have to worry about being killed every five seconds and having to start over. It's not all katana and shuriken though, as there are occasional vehicle sections to vary things up a notch - ranging from a stint on horseback to a jetski, which may just be the least ninjary mode of transport ever.

Seven stages, with loads of special bonuses to aim for, and you're looking at a fine slice (oho!) of vintage ninja action that still holds up today.

Shining Force

  • Platform: Megadrive
  • Wii Points: 800
  • In Real Money: £5.60 (8 Euros)

This cult Megadrive RPG doesn't start well. For one thing, the full title is Shining Force: The Legacy of Good Intention, managing to be nonsensical and pretentious in one go. For another, the game opens with a story so generic you'd be forgiven for thinking someone just mashed up Final Fantasy, Zelda and Chrono Trigger in a blender and strained out all the interesting bits. Magical kingdom...ancient evil...asleep for a thousand years...dark forces are stirring...world must be saved by inexperienced young apprentice. Blah blah blah, wake me when its over.

Things get worse when you finally gain control of your naïve young hero, and you're tasked with wandering around the traditional top-down village, having unavoidable expositional chats with various characters and trundling from building to building as you wait for the game to just...bloody...start...

So once things do get underway it's actually a nice surprise to find that, rather than the expected trawl through sprawling overworlds and chest-filled dungeons, what you've actually got is a tactical turn-based strategy RPG, very much in the vein of Final Fantasy Tactics. It's not quite that good, obviously, as the menu system is a little clunky and the free-roaming sections can be a chore, but amid the ocean of shoot-em-ups and platformers sloshing around the VC, anything with that little extra depth and scale is a welcome change of pace.

Dynamite Headdy

  • Platform: Megadrive
  • Wii Points: 800
  • In Real Money: £5.60 (8 Euros)

No, he really does have two Ds in his name. Not sure why. But then, when you're talking about a sentient puppet that kills things by throwing his head at them, grammatically curious nomenclature is the least of your worries.

It's a little bit Rayman, and a lot Decap Attack, but this toy-themed platformer isn't without its own innovations. Headdy can make use of a generous fifteen different heads, for instance. Eighteen if you include ones available in the sporadic flying levels. Some offer new attacks, others turn you invisible, shrink you, or make you fall asleep so you can restore your health.

It's fairly tricky - the European release featured tougher enemies than the Japanese original - and some skittish control doesn't help. Still, it's a decent enough platformer - just not one that really commands the 800 point price tag, or stands out from the crowd of similar titles already available.

7/10

Drop Off

  • Platform: TurboGrafx 16
  • Wii Points: 600
  • In Real Money: £4.20 (6 Euros)

I love it when old games have completely arbitrary and pointless stories tacked on. In this case it's the tragic tale of Izumi, the sweetheart of Takashi. One night a demonic force creeps into Izumi's dreams and keeps her there, unable to wake. A goddess then tells Takashi that he must enter the dreamworld, defeat the evil entities within, and save his true love.

He does this by bouncing a ball at masses of descending fruit. And diamonds. And skulls.

'Virtual Console Roundup' Screenshot 3

Hmm. So it's Breakout, with slight elements of Galaga, as you manoeuvre Takashi (or the blue testicular orb that represents Takashi in the dreamworld) to rebound a ball, destroying the inexorably advancing items to create a safe passage. Doing this one by one is doomed to failure, so you must try to detach large clumps of objects by chipping away at areas where they join together. Occasionally, you'll face a boss fight. Like the one against a giant purple cat with wings. Hmm again.

It's amusing enough for what it is and can be quite addictive in a simplistic sort of way but, with little variety between levels and no power ups to speak of, I suspect most gamers will find the basic appeal wears off quite rapidly.

I remember Dynamite Heady, I really enjoyed it back in the day. Wonder if it holds up...
  • afghan_jones #3 5 years ago

Its nice to see these score much higher than any of the actual boxed games with the motion control. you know, the ones the console is meant to be for.
  • Mageme #4 5 years ago

Meh, Shining Force II was better.

Thankfully Trauma Center is out on Friday so we'll finally have a reason to use the Wii-mote for its original purpose - playing great games.
  • DanWhitehead #8 5 years ago

While I'm all too aware that my Wii gets used most for retro gaming, as you don't need to hack the firmware to play these games it's pretty obvious that doing so is just as much "what the console is meant to be used for" as playing new games.
  • Der_tolle_Emil #9 5 years ago

Dynamite Headdy was praised in the forums although since I never played it I am not sure it's actually all that good. After all there are no nostalgic feelings or memories that could keep me playing.
  • sickpuppysoftware #10 5 years ago

Thankfully Trauma Center is out on Friday
It's taken that long to get over here it may well end up in a retro roundup!

    Exactly!
Having been a C64 and Megadrive kid the VC is getting more attention than most of my "proper" consoles.
And no, I can't play console games on a PC - console is all about sofa, telly and mates.
It's just not the same on a desktop.

Mageme said: Meh, Shining Force II was better.

And III was even beter, your point?

"Thankfully Trauma Center is out on Friday so we'll finally have a reason to use the Wii-mote for its original purpose - playing great games. "

    You meant to say:

Thankfully Trauma Center is out on Friday so we'll finally have a reason to use the Wii-mote for its original purpose - fleecing punters with cheap gimmicks to make Ninty even richer while they laugh and talk about all the great games they arent making.

    (Hows that for trolling ZeroAX?)

    @Gojira

My point being they should've stuck that up on VC instead.

Wasn't III a Saturn game? Do they do Saturn games on VC???
  • Der_tolle_Emil #17 5 years ago

No Saturn games on VC so far. They plan on bringing Neo Geo games to the VC though so the currently available 'consoles' so to say are all there will be. As far as I know the Neo Geo games are definetly confirmed although with no date.

And yet, he speaks so much truth on this subject.

    I guess the truth hurts.

Where is the Shadowrun RPG from the SNES? That qualifies for this sort of thing doesn't it?
  • andromeda #21 5 years ago

no news = virtual console roundup time

Sounds like Puchi Carat. Probably not as good, though.

VC roundups happen every week and are really popular, so ner, unbelievers! Hardly a shortage of news, what with Quakecon and Blizzcon...
  • Kami #25 5 years ago

Wait wait, so Shinobi III has a better learning curve than Dynamite Headdy?

    ...

I really need to find where I slipped into this alternate universe...
  • caligari #26 5 years ago

Shinobi 3 and Dynamite Headdy are two of my favourite games.

I...I just wanted to share that with you.
  • Daymare #27 5 years ago

They should put Tetris Attack (or whatever it's called in Japan) on VC, such a great multiplayer game. And chicks love it too:)
  • huxathon #28 5 years ago

Shining Force 2 was clearly the superior game by a long shot, so we may as well just wait for it to inevitably show up a few weeks from now.

And number 3? Don't get me started. That game was amazing. Just a pity we didn't get all three chapters of it over here.
  • samadriel #29 5 years ago

The GBA remake of Shining Force 1 easily outstrips SF2's meagre advantages; buggered if I know which version is on VC though.
  • convercide #30 5 years ago

    "Those games look absolutely rubbish."

...but play like a dream disc, like a dream. Dynamite Headdy was great. What's funny is that I remember finishing it when I was a kid but now really struggle to get anywhere. I'm sure gaming was more of a challenge back then. My fave virtual console release so far is Story Of Thor. I love that game. Streets Of Rage 2 is brilliant but is everywhere. SoT is harder to come by.

Shinobi III, hm, lovely! Never played it, but always wanted to. Shame i've got my hands on too many games now. It'll have to wait, but definitely coming :D
  • Mageme #32 5 years ago

    @Matsuo

Shinobi III is pure class!!! Groovy music too by Yuzo Koshiro. CLASS!!!!
  • crazyhorse174 #33 5 years ago

Played Shinobi III but never really got anywhere in it.

I did however finish Revenge of Shinobi way back years ago! (I used the infinite shurikens cheat though... )
  • JOHNTIKIS #34 5 years ago

Sega Saturn's Shinobi was ace too...It had prerendered backgrounds and FMV,really state of the art then, but couldn't be more harder to complete
