Trust me, the game is fast and responsive at 30 fps and no doubt the compromise is to allow for the impressive looking visuals which feature huge open maps with upto 15 other players onscreen. You can even use the speed modifier to make the game faster if you want!!!

Neither Gears of War, Mass Effect nor BioShock run at 60 fps on the Xbox 360 and I don't recall anyone griping about the online framerate in the former. When UTIII arrives on the 360 next year, it too will run at 30 fps like the PS3 version... unless Epic disable V-Sync or something! LOL

It's a matter of taste, nothing more...

Your overall point is valid - there's nothing wrong with 30fps if it's smooth and constant. However, don't underestimate the UT3 engine! My "good" but not "AMAZING" pc runs UT3 at 60fps no problem. The main problem that I had with the idea of this ps3 version was the fact they had slowed it all down for the people using pads, but now you've said you can speed it up that sounds a lot better. I hope this does well on the ps3, cuz I am absolutely loving the pc version. Just needs more maps.

This is good indicator of FPS is shifting from PC to console. Before, it was difficult because CPU power barrier but this barrier is thinning.

What a load of bollocks. I'm running Crysis on my PC at High settings (Vista and DX10 can get fucked), and it blows away anything on consoles. Consoles are *always* going to be on catchup, compared to top-end PC kit.

I think the point that smelly was making is that there are hundreds of FPS games coming out each year, all doing much the same thing. It get's kinda boring. I know I'm not going to buy UT3 because I'm not really playing Halo, Team Fortress, or COD4 online. Why add another title to my library that does the same thing. The market has kinda been saturated by these games.

Your comparison to SMG isn't really a fair one. Firstly because there really aren't that many stellar platformers on the market, certainly not across multi-platform. And SMG really doesn't play a whole lot like SMB, or NMB. It's similar, but more wacky and action packed than SM64 too. And more to the point, in the 10 years since SM64, there's not been anything till SMG to better it. Nor anything that does anything really like it.

Oh, and as to the 30fps vs 60fps debate. For the most part I couldn't care less. I prefer my racing games at 60fps like Forza 2, though I can stomach 30fps in PGR4. I don't know what motorstorm runs at, but it plays fine to me. For other genre's, FPS in particular, I'm quite happy with 30fps. Just to clear that up.

It's not fair to slag off UT3 for a lack of originality, when it's all that everyone sees now, without also speaking more widely of the whole industry.

Well as you're talking about mario. You're lucky to get a GOOD platform game once every 3 or 4 years. And in the case of mario, probably once every 6 years.

And when a new mario does come along, it normally adds something to the genre (apart from sunshine - but lets forget about that). Mario 64 - took it into 3d. Mario galaxy took it past 3d and into some very clever ideas/tech.


On the other hand, there are 100's (over exaggeration) of fps games released every year. And none of them really offer any over the other ones - apart from graphical enhancements and differences in story.

Last gen, I was VERY MUCH applauding the xbox as it allowed me to play "pc style" fps games on a console with the likes of halo, etc - without needing to upgrade my pc every few months, etc. However the problem is now that it seems that EVERY SINGLE FLIPPING GAME is a flipping fps game.

When you've been gaming as long as i have, it's just as depressing as seeing mcfly sell well in the music charts when there are great talented bands which seem to be over looked by the masses.

Of course i cant change the masses opinion, and i cant be arsed trying to. But I *do* find it very depressing that the games industry has gone this way.. It's a tired cynical mess.

UT3 consists of nothing more than an advert to sell their engine to people. It's not a game..


A few months back i was moaning about halo 3. But in retrospect having played them both now, I'd rather play halo 3 than this - at least it has some way approaching a decent single player experience (even if - imho - a slightly dull one).

Slag off what, now? When have I slagged off Mario? You reek of Nintendo fanboism, with that remark. A very defensive post.

Plus, imo, you're confusing Marios evolution, as a genre, with a control method. In Mario, all you've ever really done is traverse platforms, avoiding the badguys, collecting coins and stars and doing bosses. Tart it up all you like, exchanging graphics for controls, but it makes no difference. The core 'game' is exactly the same. Nintendo know it and you know it. It's why it continues to be popular. Don't fuck up a good idea. Sure, change the viewpoint (2d to 3d) and implement a new control system, but *dont* change the core gameplay.

What makes a game *good* is the story but great graphics absolutely increase the enjoyment. Crysis is a fucking stunner, in that regard, and has a top 'marines and guns versus aliens' story to go with. It's the kind of game that has you grinning from start to (almost) end. It's no different to watching the next big sci-fi movie and if *that* were to suddenly revert back to Dr Who special effects, you'd have Joe Public in uproar.

Oh, What a surprise! Smelly turns up moaning about how all FPS are grey and rubbish and turns a UT3 thread into a discussion about Mario....

You *especially* like this lot? As opposed to the dozens of other games available on the PS3 that you simply like but not quite as much? This list of 6 games pretty much accounts for anything worth owning on the PS3, two of which had mediocre scores on EG and one of which is also on the 360.

The games? /SLAP. The 360 has more games, more exclusives, and better versions of multi-format games.

The hardware? /SLAP. The PS3 is just another over-hyped piece of hardware that although decent, isn't a fraction as powerful as Sony claims. PSone, PS2, PSP and now PS3 - all came with ridiculous claims of Toy Story graphics, individual strands of hair, "Xbox 1.5", "1.0 teraflop vs / 1.8 teraflop" etc. etc. Just look at the games on all of the consoles compared to their competitors - do they look twice as advanced? No, they don't.

Features? /SLAP. PS3 has to be the biggest fuck-up of all time. Blu-ray - expensive trojan horse or the next generation of media? The 360 and PC are both doing fine with having their games on DVD. Is a console that's less powerful than both of those really going to need all that extra space?

Ripping motion-sensing from Nintendo and ramming it into a 10-year-old PSone joypad two weeks before unveiling wasn't exactly clever. Trying to convince the world that it was always planned, that rumble and motion-sensing weren't possible together, and that rumble was "last-gen" was even less so. Now we have rumble coming back and are expected to believe that it's not because Sony has been getting arse-raped by a herd of elephants for making such a stupid mistake, but because it has now suddenly become technically possible.

Yes, Nintendo had somehow managed to put together hardware that was just as powerful as the other two, which they were going to sell at half the price (price had just been released at the time) and still make a profit on it (as Nintendo always does on their hardware), despite MS and Sony losing money on theirs.

The guy just would not accept that the hardware would HAVE to be less advanced for any of this to make sense.

Though, obviously that statement is flawed. By the very nature of testing, you have to look at things on a time-based comparison, else it's not a test, is it?
You'd have to compare the average of every single exclusive XBox 360 game against every single exclusive PS3 game, since launch. And thats unlikely to prove anything other than perhaps a slightly lower 360 score (by the nature of averages).
Another fair test would be to compare the first, say, 50 games. Average scores over cross-media reviews and then tally up an average for those 50 games.

But why do all this anyway?
So you can turn around and say, 'look at the stats, this one is better'?
There was fuck all on the 360 for the first 9 months so why bitch about it being a similar case on the PS3?

Always makes me laugh when people on here believe themselves to be SO IMPORTANT that anyone will actually give a fuck when they add people to their ignore list. =)

Both X360 and Ps3 are very capable and powerfull machines, yet you guy's claim (x360fanboys) that the Ps3 isn't as good as the X360 and was just a big waste of time and money (Orange Box dev, someone??) but how can we compare something brand new that hasn't had time to developed??? Comparing Ps3 to X360 is like expecting a baby to do the same things as a teenager, it takes tame for the dev's to fully experiment and adapt to the Ps3 powerfull processor (the thing that makes it totally diferent from the X360)... games are getting better and better and at the end of the first year we saw games like Warhawk, Uncharted, Ratchet, Heavenly Sword... that can already compete "and sometimes surpass" with anything the X360 can offer, next year will be even better, there are strong EXCLUSIVE titles coming that will explore the Ps3 architecture.

Oh and Quak allow me to disagree, i truly enjoy the Ps3 "store and on-line capabilites/features... and the fact that is for free is something relevant, because i praticulary don't like to pay 2-3-4-5 times for the same game, it's a shame in my opinion that gamers have to pay that much for one game (especially given the recent emphasis on multiplayer content "games like Unreal and COD4" with almost no Single Player campaign, thouse games are 60-70 Euros, and if you want to play them completely you have to pay even more).... i congratulate sony for that, truly user friendly.

Sadly, people *do* remember facts. The PS3 dev-kit was shipped at the same time - if not sooner - than completed X360 dev-kits because - as I'm sure you hate to agree - the PS3 was supposed to be launched what was it? A full 9 months before it was actually launched? Now, you all come here and bitch about the 360's supposed 1 year head-start but the reality is that this 1 year was only relevant to when customers could go out and buy the kit. Developers had access to both dev-kits at around the same time, so this whole "baby being expected to do what a teenager can" thing you have going on here is unfortunately rubbish.

Besides, even if this really was the case and the PS3 wasn't 9 months late to market, surely a console that is - and I quote from Sony here - 1.8 times as powerful as the Xbox 360 - should be able to produce better looking games right out of the box without developers requiring time to learn how to squeeze the last bits of power out of it?

If I want a story, i'll go to the cinema watch a movie, or read a book. I play games to play them, not to sit back and watch them.

Stories make games better by drawing a player in and making them care about the outcome. Space Invaders is a classic example of a throwaway game, purely because there's no narrative or story. I've had an absolute blast with World In Conflict (PC), Halo 3 (360) and Crysis (PC), *because* of the story. If they were generic, run of the mill, games with no backdrop, I wouldn't have played them to completion. Surprises come via developer imagination NOT contrived stories.

anyway - microsoft has got this gen wrapped up nicely. real gamers follow games not consoles, however ps3 will inevitably pick up pace as it is a powerful machine (i think?) with a 10 year plan - however in my opinion microsoft probably has a 6 yr plan for the 360 and by the time the ps3 is ready to dragon punch all the 360 can offer the man Bill Gates will be revealling the 720 with chips and processers etc that should be far far far superior to the ps3 (in my opinion) and with a 4 yr head start sony may be joining the sega bandwagon sooner rather than later
