I am put off by two facts:

- No control over ships, meaning you'll see/control no sea battles. Jeez, how could they let this opportunity slip by in a game with this topic? The ships look excellent, yet the only thing you can do with them is send them off the map???

- No graphical representation of certain elements, meaning you can for example decide to hang a few pirates or give them a festival, but you won't see them hanging at the gallows or dancing in the streets actually.

I've read this in a review, but I guess it's correct?

Wouldn't mind winning it though. :-)

edit4: I'll edit this until it really shines.

Cool, I'll check it out tonight, though I'm not really going to have time for another game, with Zelda and the Medieval expansion out this Friday.

Nope.

Anyway it's an Izzard sketch about Pirates, Parrots and so forth. (to explain)

or the division of produce between two factories which use the same raw materials.

Does that mean they got rid of the priority functions from the first one? I'm sure there was a way to indirectly control it in Tropico 1.

EDIT1: Also, are there multiple paths to follow like in T1, where you could go for different industry (Russia) vs tourism (USA)?

EDIT2: Whata bout the faction feature? Is that still in there? Twas one of my favourite parts of the game.

Ohh they hate you, they do. Hmm, yeah. They put poison in your coffee, mmm yes. I control them, with this... this... I've forgotten the rest.

"Does that mean they got rid of the priority functions from the first one? I'm sure there was a way to indirectly control it in Tropico 1."

As usual, we were playing this one without a manual, but the in-game encyclopedia is fairly comprehensive, and if there's resource prioritising there, it's bloody well hidden. You can set priorities on recruitment at each building (so if you don't have enough pirates or captives, you can ensure that jobs are filled in vital installations first), but resource distribution seems to mostly be down to the distance between the buildings. For example, if your Sea Rations factory is further away from your farms than your Corn Slop kitchen, the chances are that your Corn Slop kitchen will be full of unprocessed corn while the Sea Rations factory cupboard goes bare. It's not an unsurmountable problem, but it's bloody annoying at times.

"EDIT1: Also, are there multiple paths to follow like in T1, where you could go for different industry (Russia) vs tourism (USA)?"

Um.... Not really, no. I mean, you can certainly develop your island in different ways and focus on certain elements, but at the end of the day, pirates are very good at mayhem and thievery on the high seas, and not so hot at embroidering or waitressing :)

"EDIT2: Whata bout the faction feature? Is that still in there? Twas one of my favourite parts of the game."

Assuming we're thinking of the same thing, then yes, it's there. Your pirates are drawn from French, Spanish and English stock, and if your relationships with France are spectacularly bad, then your French pirates will be a bit disgruntled, for example.

So the faction issue is just country related (that makes three-four of them)? I'm thinking of religious, intellectual, communist, capitialist, military, democratic.... there was a large list in the previous one.

Might get this - sounds a good game, but before I get it I will have to offload my Sim Shity 4 game . I never played the original Tropico. But I have to admit it does sound quite similar to the Settlers series of games, whihc I really liked. I'm sure there must be a Settlers 5 ;) game due out soon.

Those who ridicule the game for not allowing control of ships or being able to see them off the map have obviously got another idea about this game. It is a city-builder sim.

Didn't know that there's a book of golden rules for city-builder sims that wouldn't allow the implementation of an original - or better: obvious - idea into such a game.

But why would you want to control a ship in Tropico 2?? It's not that kind of game! It's like saying "Command & Conquer is fine but I want a first person option so I can run around and shoot things".

*oh*

I hate to insist, but what's up with the Tropico compo? Bloody typical, I am so sure I've won, but EG just refuses to announce it.
