I really loved this game when I played it about 4 years ago. It sure was long, but I finished it, and on a painfully slow computer, too. If only I had that much spare time nowadays.

I think RPGs should not be treated harsher than, say, Jump n' Runs in regards to aging. Somehow I only see "yeah yeah, 12 years ago this would have been good" only in RPG reviews.

Would Citizen Kane also have been good "fifty years ago", because SFX, picture and sound quality suck?

The game is as good as it was years ago, and personally I'm having a lot of fun with it.

"this is not the best handheld RPG money can buy today"

Quick question: what would you say *is* the best handheld RPG? Golden Sun? GS: Lost Age? Riviera?

No, Fire Emblem (if we include tactical RPGs, that is).

I got bored and lost in Golden Sun pt 2. Very aimless. Nice combat though.

Never heard of riviera. I'll check it out.

This game still sounds very appealing, I've never been so interested in a 6/10 EG game before, let's put it that way

"It's not even the Super Nintendo RPG we would have wished to be ported with eyes clenched tight and fingers white from crossing."
For me, that would definitely be Secret of Mana...That game was excellent!

I wonder if they will ever bring any old Dragon Quest games to the GBA or DS...it would be nice but I doubt it...and besides if they did we'd never see it on these shores.

Yes, please ask me for my copy. I should warn you that it's utterly awful, however.

Seems like there are 'loads' of good games out for the DS, judging by the continual high-scores they keep getting.

Shame. I really wanted one too.

Wow, harsh review. The reviewer clearly dislikes Tales Of Eternia (how is that relevant to ToP?). Since Phantasia is getting bashed for being old can I expect the same sort of review for Final Fantasy V and VI when they come out on the GBA?

I didn't bash the game for being old. Good gameplay remains good gameplay forever. However, there are elements of this game that were never good; elements that this same developer has since ironed out and tweaked so that their experience here feels all the more awkward. That's called ageing badly.

Not to mention that this is a crappy port of the far superior PS1 version, which isn't saying much considering ToP was never THAT good a game in the first place. This is painful to play, especially after playing the fast-paced and very solid and improved battles of Tales of Eternia.

Fine then. Though I find it odd that the crashes and graphic glitches are not mentioned.

It's a good game but it aint aged to well. Simple as that, if you can look past this you should have fun with it.

Personally I hated Riviera and for me Golden Sun & GS2 are the best RPGs on the GBA by a country mile, in fact they're two of the best I've played. So obviously based on my opinion you should go for Riviera, Blerk. ;p
