I suppose this is very much a game for the die hard wrestling fans (of which I'm not one).

A quick scan the line "You can hit RVD with a chair as he's doing a frog splash in DOR, so why can't you here?" sounds more complicated that some of the code I'm going to be writing today.

Good review. If they could just improve the game engine, this would be an all time classic. As you say theres always next year...

On your opening statement Kurt Angle when fully fit blows away Beniot, the Rock could lay the smacketh down on the Rattlesnake. Finally Big Show to beat the Legend Hogan? you must be on the same wacky backy as RVD. if you think that will happen.

What you gonna do when Hogan Runs wild on YOU!!!

I have a feeling that lots of people who don't watch wrestling actually enjoy these games.

I think we can safely say RFOM is not the killer app people made it out to be, but it's still a very solid shooter, 8/10 at Eurogamer?

Why are you talking about RFOM you silly man? wrong thread!

tut tut judging a game review scores again and just to go off topic even more RFOM got an average of 90% so far on gamerankings.

I tend to enjoy wrestling games and not know squat of wrestling but the wrestlers feel to heavy to move about so I havn't touched a wrestling game in years.

Pedant mode on:

there even a health selection...

Perhaps should have been "there's even a healthy selection....

Good review, will pass on this year's edition on the basis of that.

And Cena does suck.

FFS. What possible link does this have with either RFOM or Gears?

Different reviewer, different genre and different platform for the latter.

Please refrain ESM.

I played the demo of this and got my ass handed to me - I have no idea how to play wrestling games. But then I have no wish to either, the whole thingisn't my cup of tea really.

Oof, bit of a low score in my eyes. I'd definitely give this a 9. It's my favourite game of the moment along with Gears (yes, it's better than FEAR and CoD3)

What about the load times? They were terrible even when the demo was being loaded off the HD and the less said about the PSP version, the better. Its sort of staggering that it has 3 load sections before you can play a match.

Plus.......

ITS STILL REAL TO ME, DAMMIT!

I took this back. Quite a let down and not worth 45. I'll pick it up elsewhere in a month or two for half the notes. Anywho that's my view but my mate loves it. For other men in lycra check out the new spidey 3 trailer at http://www.ifilm.com/presents/spiderman3. This film is goin to rock. Also the new Superman returns demo on marketplace has potential if you watch the end video when you've finished it. Totally irrelevant like I said.

LOAD TIMES ON SMACKDOWN ARE STILL POOR.

Chris Benoit makes other fighters look good, hes amasing and his fights versus The Rock and Stone Cold were mega, I used to lie in bed hungover and watch them on Sky before Football Focus, the heady days of Smackdown 2, multitap fun!

Don't bet on them not doing a PS2 version next year. There will still be plenty of those around and they can develop a PS2 version fairly easily together with a PSP version. Heck they can even share some assets with the Wii version.

Fair review I guess but I must confess to really enjoying this game, particularly as it's the first GOOD WWE game on the Xbox platform. It still has the same old flaws that the wonderful PS2 games had like clipping and dodgy A.I. but it retains its playability and looks absolutely fantastic visually. I also like the Stamina system and new grappling system plus there's lots of modes and wrestlers to choose from plus a great CAW mode too. Shame there's no support for custom soundtracks ingame but this is a solid, fun wrestling game and stands miles above dross like WWE Raw 2 and Wrestlemania XXI on the Xbox.

*Waits for the wrestling stereo-types insults about men in tights and fats blokes and it's all fake you know crap to come*

Nice game I enjoyed it, shame though it's a shiny port. Xbox 360 can do miles better with a game like this.

Well Spiderman did start out as a wrestler so technically he should be in WWE.

Just need to get past the liscensing that's all. :D

@Nickthegun - Of course you can use custom soundtracks but you cannot use them for custom entrances which was the point I was making. It's something that both WWE Raw 1/2 and Wrestlemania XXI had on the Xbox though.

In the demo it all felt a bit disconnected and hopeless. Get knocked over. Hammer A button repeatedly to recover - but actually achieve nothing. Get leg dropped, remain on mat hammering A button. Eventually stand up, land 3 punches that don't do anything, find 4th is reversed, fall down on mat, hammer A button.

Later.. Order new joypad due to broken A button. Also very surprised London and Kendricks aren't in it, they're two of the only reasons left to watch the show.

Haven't played the 360 version but I wasn't impressed with the PS2 version, the whole "sim" angle is taking the fun out of it :(, for me anyway. I'll stick to "Here Comes the Pain".

I actually agree almost fully with this review and the score given. It simply felt like 06 with a graphical touch up and some newer additions, so it rings true with the 'Fifa of wrestling games' statement. Oh and the controls were kinda annoying this time around too; why do they keep fiddling? I still think DOR2 is the better game, and Smackdown's never actually touched on that (although SD!2 is still fun to this day) - was it a different team developing it? I'm amazed they managed to capture the look of EVERY wrestler so well in DOR2 yet they can't do it when they're actually scanning in the superstars this year. It's a shame my Gamecube's packed in and emulators aren't up to scratch yet.

But yeah fun game for a few hours. I think I'll be playing Project 8 more.

My housemates and I would play tag-team DOR for hours, often until 2 or 3 in the morning. Since I have lived with non-parent type people, the only games that have had as much multiplayer fun as DOR (and DOR2) are Pro Evo and Mario Kart. As I said in the review, if only there was some way of somehow cramming the DOR grappling engine into SvsR.

(Or at least, getting Carlito's backcracker in DOR2. And Finley. Because he'd get to fight, and he loves doing that.)

Next year they should team up with Team Ninja and release WWE Smackdown Vs Raw-X, where you pose, buy bikinis, butt fight and mud wrestle. They could reuse the independent tit bounce engine too.
