"Heritage of Kings". As in "inbred and a little stunted".

Thanks for that great review, mate. As a former team member of both "The Settlers III" and "The Settlers IV" I was quite disappointed to see, that after all those years the new team under Ubisoft's "Blue Byte" label came up with just another nice-looking "Age of Indifference" title. "The Heritage of Kings" is not a "Settlers" game, which is a shame. That's how you waste a franchise by jumping on the next best bandwagon.

honest but fair

i loved the first settlers game and the second was ok, since then it's all been downhill :(

a shame as the original formulae was highly addictive and very endearing as you really did come to care about the little blighters :)

The Settlers lost their way back in Settlers III... from there it's been a slow death, IMO.

Well, S3 and S4 were at least utterly playable. S4 was plagued by the need to create a new engine from scratch and an (IMHO) incompetent project manager. But those games were PLAYABLE.

"The Heritage of Kings" is just a boring, ill-conceived "Age of Warcraft" clone with a pretty face and a heart of tin.

I still hear the birds whistle in the first Settlers.

I even suspect some birds near where I live of imitating The Settlers, instead of the other way round.

I find this review to be a little harsh to be honest. I've played the game since it came out and I like it. I don't care whether it's better or worse than previous Settlers, and I am a massive fan of the series. Taken on its own, rather than part of the series, I think its a good solid game.

Oh, and Eldritch, 'incompetant' and 'project manager' go together like peas and carrots.

I'd take it one further and say it should have been a 5.5834256123

I really didn't like Settlers 4, I tried to like it but the bugs and the way it was constructed just made that very difficult.

"'incompetent' and 'project manager' go together like peas and carrots"

Another great reason to become a freelancer then. (C:

As for "The Settlers IV", give it a try now - the bugs are fixed. (C;

As for "Heritage of Kings" I still wonder why UbiSoft bought Blue Byte in the first place. All they cranked out were two S4 add-ons and that lacklustre "sequel". No "Incubation", no "Battle Isle", no "Great Courts", let alone ANY (!) console or handheld versions ("History Line" for GBA, anyone?). So why buy the studio and its brands? Or do they just collect studios?

Unconed_, read what he said again.
It's a bit confusing the first time, but he said Thief 1/2 did not have wall climbing, it had rope arrows, but that if Thief 1/2 had climbing gloves, and Thief: DS swapped to rope arrows, people would still complain.

While I completely agree with your comments about rope arrows and level design(I was extremely dissapointed by the small scope and scale of Thief:DS, as well as how few different methods of tackling missions you had compared to previous ones).

I think, TDS is still a fine game, despite its obvious limitations. Same goes for DXIW. Just have a look at the generic crap you get in shops these days and you might come to appreciate Ion Storm's last efforts. (C;

It's just another me to RTS now, with a bit of story added. It's quite good for that genre but everything that made settlers stand out is gone.

Um, no, it's not "quite good for that genre". It's very, very mediocre for a genre that is dominated by great games like AoE and RoN. At least that is what the review said, and what I thought after the demo.

UnConeD: Yeah, was baiting a fair bit.

I accept your points, but argue that - as you go onto - the failings of climbing gloves are primarily a level design issue rather than a toolset issue. There could have been levels just as interesting as the cited levels with climbing gloves - it was the flatter levels which was the problem.

(Hopefully, with the SDK now out, we'll have a chance to see - though I'd argue the Museum level had some fun climbing exercises. But I think the Cradle was the best Thief level ever, so what would I know, eh?)

It should also be noted that the fanboys were screaming at the change before they even played the game. I'd say my point stands.

Hm, the cradle map wasnt actually that good, the saving grace was the atmosphere(which was the best I can remember in any game)

From the text of the review I'd expected a worse mark than just a five. Does the scale start on a 4 nowadays?

But I like the idea of Deus EX RTS. No really, when is it due?
