Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader Review

Review - is it the reason to buy a Cube? This is what we think

Version tested: GameCube

You don't need to see his identification

A dramatic bit from the Academy Heist level. I've just pinched a TIE Fighter...

Tatooine. Bespin. Star Destroyers. Luke Skywalker. Darth Vader and his TIE Advanced. The Death Star. Twice. X-Wings. TIE Fighters. Stormtroopers. AT-ATs. R2D2. Rogue Leader is Star Wars the way you remember it. Except this time you're piloting the ships and fighting for the Rebellion, in the struggle to overcome the evil GALACTIC EMPIRE. We often compare games to movies, but from the archetypal star screen introduction right the way through to the game's monumental climax, this is the ultimate accompaniment and tribute to those three original Star Wars movies we all cherish.

Rogue Squadron fans have been rewarded with a superb continuation to the N64's best Star Wars game. Rogue Leader begins with players taking on the guise of that whiny runt Skywalker, and as a warm-up budding pilots must down the original Death Star, first taking out laser towers and slaying a number of TIE Fighters. With a little help from Han Solo (and of course the Force) Luke puts pay to deplorable imperial machinations. And then the game gets interesting.

Visually this is Star Wars as you saw it on the big screen. Scenes from the films are remodelled in the crisp game engine and look almost perfect, accompanied by John Williams' inimitable score and virtually any of the films' sound effects you might care to mention. From the intricately detailed planes of the Death Star with TIEs swooping this way and that, to the sight of Bespin emerging from the haze, and the inevitable approach and decimation of the then imperial-laden city, Rogue Leader leaves little to the imagination. This is Star Wars. You will feel like you are there. Is this now clear?

Absolutely your worship

Now that's a wingman!

Good. Then I can start telling you about the rest of it. The mission structure is deadly simple. You have ten regular missions to complete, some of which intersect with the films and some of which do not. You play either as Luke or Wedge depending on the mission (so for instance, while Luke's off giving his right hand for a tussle with Vader, Wedge is busy carpet-bombing something), and you can play from either third person or cockpit views.

The whole game could be over in a day if you race through the narrative, but the idea is to fight for the bronze, silver and gold medals, which demand increasingly difficult objectives, and then play with the prizes. Success could mean unlocking some of the game's secret ships, levels or modes of play, and when you have access to more of the ships it becomes easier to get the silver or gold on earlier levels. Hidden ships range from the obvious to the peculiar, and for those of you with a Fett-ish, Slave 1 is among 'em. You even get to play as the Falcon, which is a selling point in itself.

The objectives are similarly diverse, including the aforementioned Death Star run, the Battle of Hoth and bits and bobs in-between. The missions often feed into one another, and you get to down Star Destroyers as well as the smaller TIEs and imperial shuttles. Some of the missions seem a bit unnecessary, like the jailbreak mission in the middle of the game, but it's good to see that they all stand up to repeated play and give you a little breather now and then. For instance, although you can pull down your targeting computer to help you pick TIEs out of a particularly dense nebula on the way out of Hoth, later on you can toggle the thing on or off without holding down the relevant button and skewering your concentration.

Would it help if I got out and pushed?

AT-ATs must be taken down using tow cables, but then you already knew that

The control system itself is very responsive and early reports suggested it went a bit far, but as the game wears on you start to appreciate it. Over-responsive controls are obviously not conducive to fine-tuning manoeuvres, and bouncing around the bowels of Bespin in a Y-Wing can be maddening, but conversely, spinning 180 degrees on an imperial credit and blowing the hell out of a pursuing TIE Fighter can be the adrenaline rush to end them all. Overall though the twitch-this-way-twitch-that-way feel of the system conflicts with the game's principle virtue: its authenticity.

That said the ships all behave differently. The Y-Wings, while pretty frail, are very handy for bombing runs (for which the game switches to an elevated view to help you find your targets) and the B-Wings, while less manoeuvrable than an X-Wing, can make themselves quite small and happily scamper about the nose of a Star Destroyer without getting caught by too many laser blasts. All of the ships are very much as they were in the films, thanks to some detailed design which blows recent efforts like Jedi Starfighter right out of the sky, and the bigger ships lose none of the detail you might expect. Indeed, flying past the bridge of a Star Destroyer you will feel a twinge of fear at the sheer size and imposing sight of the thing. And there are bigger things to come.

The fact that Rogue Leader crashes now and then has been the subject of much discussion lately, but to us it's a minor niggle. The game seems to save itself before it crashes, so there isn't much harm in it, even if it is unfortunate that Factor 5 didn't bother to fix it in the months since its American release. On the other hand, without question the PAL conversion here is excellent, with a full screen 60Hz mode and only slight borders at 50Hz, all of the DVD-like extras that complemented the American release of the game, and MusyX-powered Dolby Pro-Logic II surround sound. The game also supports progressive scan mode if you happen to own a Death Star of a TV, and the spectacular FMV cutscenes which punctuate the levels blend together seamlessly with the gameplay elements. There's a bit of slowdown here and there, particularly noticeable when you're tow-roping AT-ATs on Kothlis, but you'll be so busy concentrating on the action that it won't be all that apparent.

Who's scruffy lookin'?

'Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader' Screenshot 04b

It looks just as good when it's moving

Rogue Leader is the absolute pinnacle of Star Wars games. It's bloody hard in places, but it pampers the nostalgic and conveys so effortlessly the beauty of the galaxy and the sheer tyranny of the evil Empire that you will Force your way through it until there's no stone left unturned. Some have said that it wouldn't be as good without the Star Wars aspect, that it's a fairly mediocre space combat game, but to me that's a ridiculous argument. Rogue Leader is the embodiment of Star Wars in a videogame. That is the point. This is a game charting the progress of Luke and Wedge through the Star Wars trilogy, and it's the perfect vehicle for fans of the series who have always wanted it to be real.

At a slightly higher asking price than your average Cube title, you might argue that it's a bit short, but it's the quality of the experience which makes it worthwhile. ICO was pretty short, and that's one of the best games of all time, well worth the outlay. Rogue Leader falls under the same heading, but with replay value to boot. The only truly major criticism I can level at it is the lack of a multiplayer mode, which would have capped off an otherwise superb package.

Some games don't need a license to be good. Rogue Leader is good because it lives up to its billing. You can argue with me about that until we're both blue in the face, but the only deciding factor here is whether or not you like space combat games. Do you? Because everybody loves Star Wars, right? And this is that. Buy it. Buy a Cube for it.

9 out of 10...... surely you cant give a game that crashes and is a bit short that high? considering the poor scores that virtually all xbox games have received here, i'm sensing some bias here........

didn't have to wait long ;)

  • Pirotic #4 10 years ago

    "i'm sensing some bias here......"

erm.. you said they gave all xbox games poor scores, and yet complain when they give one a highscore.. whos the biased one :p
  • dudley #5 10 years ago

    nah, no bias, i think

every game has it's flaws, it just matters whether it can rise above them or not.
console prejudices aside, rogue leader is truly fantastic. if it had been an xbox title it would have made me buy one.

Face it, everyone want to destroy the Death Star, and you get to do it twice in this game. What else is there?
  • Kylun #10 10 years ago

What gets me about this game is even when you watch someone else play it, you are not bored - even in the slightest!

One time, my friend was taking on the Star Destroyer - one life left (one life he exploded on the shield generator to take it out!) and only the bridge to go. He flew straight at it, and just before he could pull away he got cut down in a hail of turbolaser shots, only for the husk of his ship to carry on on, hit the bridge, destroying it and complete the mission.

    Marvellous!

    He also got a medal.

The Bonus missions are brilliant - won't say anything in case it spoils the suprise...... =]
  • Kylun #11 10 years ago

Oh! And the first endor mission - bliss.
  • st3ph3n #12 10 years ago

Damned good game, hasn't crashed on me once, and I've clocked up a fair bit of time on this.

Get a cube, this and a long weekend and you'll be happy.

The game creates something which a number of games fail to do these days - Atmosphere. It sucks you in, and that is what makes it a great game and not just a good game.

BTW, if I click a link to one of these sites does it get you guys some cash if I buy the item, cos I personally don't mind doing such a thing, much better than paying IGN for some jumped up review shit.
  • Jesus: Action Figure #13 10 years ago

/dons his Rogue Leader armour to avoid Xbox fanboys

I LOVE this game. I got Waverace and Luigi with my cube but I've only played WR for about an hour and haven't touched Luigi's (though my gf loves it).

The whole of my weekend was taken up with this game. The graphics are LUSH, the sound breathtaking through the right setup and you do feel as if you're in the movie.

I've wanted this since the first film came out.

And there's plenty of replay value (I'm afraid I'm still stuck on the Battle of Endor mission - take down two Star Destroyers? Are you kidding!!???!!)

    Nice review - bang on.

One thing I have to add, whenever someone sees a ship that look like the Millenium Falco, they immideatley think "Oh, that's the Millenium Falcon". That's wrong, the MF is a modified Corellian Transport, not all Corellian Transports are Millenium Falcons...there, had to get it out of me.

Besides SMB, this is pretty much the only game I'd want for the Cube...too bad I don't have the cash.

Played it on my m8's GC and hated it. Was considering buying a cube for this and am now glad I didn't.

While it undeniably looks gorgeous, I personally found the gameplay to be terrible. I much prefer the Jedi Starfighter style, a bit closer to a sim but still with the mad shooting bits. There's just not enough freedom of movement for me :(
  • Kylun #18 10 years ago

wrong, the MF is a modified Corellian Transport

Although, they are supposed to be rare, and the MF is heavily (to the point of supitidy) modified.

"What gets me about this game is even when you watch someone else play it, you are not bored - even in the slightest! "

I find this with good games in general, it's not until you see someone else play it that you can really apreciate the little touches, you can let your eye wander around the screen more and take it all in. Unfourtunatly the only other people to play my 'cube (my sis and nephew) didn't want to try it (both begging to play Lugig) but I've been orderd to take it over my mates at the weekend so I can have a better look then.

    ps: great game

  • eviltobz #29 10 years ago

Doesn't seem to be as 'on rails' as others seem to suggest...

According to the developers postmortem on Gamasutra there is a combination of on-rail behaviour coupled with flocking AI for the TIEs, and presumably some of the other enemies as well. Well worth a read for those who are more technically minded and interested in the process of making games.
  • mentat #30 10 years ago

So... The question is, having spent on an Xbox this month, is it worth buying a GC next month just for rogue leader?
I did spend out full whack for a PS2 just to get to play GT3...
  • skalmanxl #31 10 years ago

So...Jaffa cakes are spounge cake, with orange jelly and topped with choclate... Right *packs bag* Does anyone have a spare room?

Jaffa cakes are truely marvellous and here is a link to why England are going to win the World Cup because of them. Maybe.. well probably not.
  • AnotherMartin #33 10 years ago

mentat - if you paid full whack for a PS2 (£300 or £200?) just to play GT3 then I would say yes, but it shouldn't be too hard to find a shop where you can play it first just to be sure

Yeah it was a prototype, I think the books had to cobble some excuse about it having a hyperdrive on board otherwise there was no way he could have left the Yavin system. This link has some good details about it.

  • kingmob #42 10 years ago

"did you try it with the auto roll and auto level off? Much better :)"

I did, and I played it for a good while on a variety of missions. I thought it was too on-rails for my taste and I really missed having a target selector thingy (i am up on my spaceship jargon)

Oh well, I won't hold a grudge against you lot who love it, it's just not for me. different strokes and all that.

The GF was well narked when I told her I didn't want a cube though as she'd spent the whole day Saturday looking for a Woolies with the rogue leader bundle in stock.

On the more important subject of Jaffa cakes does anyone know if you can still get the other flavours, fruits of the forest I think was one and there was a green flavour as well.
  • Nemesis #43 10 years ago

Is it worth a GC just for Rogue Leader? I'd say so!

This is hopefully a good year for SW. With EP2 coming out next week, RL on GC and Knights on the 'box us fans are spoilt. If you are a true SW fan, go out and get this now. Just for the trench run. It's really THAT good and it outshines the other launch titles by miles.

Can't recommend this one highly enough. Not had any crashes mind.

Also. Jaffa Cakes. Get the Tesco Value ones as they taste like the old ones used to. Proper sponge, not the new 'cake' base (damn EU).

Good review Mugs, I'll have 2 sugs in mine boys!

Just wanted to comment on this site's clear pro-GameCube bias, anyone else notice this?
  • Blerk #49 10 years ago

    pro-GameCube bias

Funny, a few months ago they were apparently in Sony's pocket for daring to score a few PS2 games highly. They can't be biased towards EVERYBODY!
  • rauper Verified Managing Director, Eurogamer Network #50 10 years ago

    "some people can't read chinese"

No shit. Everyone thought the site had broken when you posted.
  • skalmanxl #51 10 years ago

The thing is, they have given some generally popular games, less good scores. By that, people automatically think that EG is biased, when in fact, they might have a diffrent view on this. Xbox fanboys should be HAPPY that I'm not a Xbox reviewer on EG...I show no mercy towards games I don't like, I have for instance given Wreckless 2/10 at the site I write.

Sure, they have given some games for GC, scores that I find it hard to understand, but you don't see me go around crying about it. Why...well it MIGHT have to do with something that I know that we can't all agree on what certain games are like. So some games I like have gotten scores I don't agree on, I don't really mind, I know what I think of the games...then what other people think doesn't really matter to me unless I'm going to buy a specific game.

We all have diffrent values, some people consider Halo to be the greatest game ever, I want to have them comitted. I think that NHL Hitz is one of the best game on the Xbox, some people want me comitted. Get off it, you don't have to validate your purchase by attacking people with diffent opinions.
  • Jesus: Action Figure #52 10 years ago

Skal, while I agree with most of what you say, it's slightly different if I say I like this game to EG saying they like it.

Reviews are meant to give an objective view on a game so that readers can make an informed purchasing decision.
  • Gestalt #53 10 years ago

"eurogamer gives xbox halo a 8/10"

Oh god, here we go again. STOP FIXATING ON THE SCORES. The two different games in two different genres were reviewed by two different reviewers on two different consoles. All the relative scores mean is that Tom liked Rogue Leader more than I liked Halo. Read the review and make up your own mind instead of skipping straight to the score and assuming that it has some kind of mystical significance. It doesn't. It's just there as a rough pointer as to what the reviewer thought of the game.

"They can't be biased towards EVERYBODY"

    Of course we can. :)
  • Gestalt #54 10 years ago

"Reviews are meant to give an objective view on a game so that readers can make an informed purchasing decision"

And I'd like to think that our reviews do that, as long as you don't just skip straight to the score at the end. ;)
  • Jesus: Action Figure #55 10 years ago

"as long as you don't just skip straight to the score at the end" - or fixate on them, I imagine ;o)
  • Blerk #56 10 years ago

    STOP FIXATING ON THE SCORES

I still think you should mark out of two or three.
    * Buy It!
    * Don't Buy It!
    and possibly
    * Buy-It-If-You-Like-This-Kind-Of-Thing
  • AnotherMartin #57 10 years ago

As much as I like a site and/or it's writers I would never buy a game based on one review. One of the best things about the www is the ability to get various opinions in a short amount of time
  • skalmanxl #58 10 years ago

Well, a reviewer can only say what he/she thinks of the game, a reader should be aware of this when reading a review. We all have very diffrent tastes, and noone can please everyone. I suggest that people who need to buy a game should read multiple reviews, if they see a pattern of similar reviews, that might be a good indication.

There are always people who are diffrent, I get alot of buff because of my disliking of some Xbox games, and a few days ago I saw someone that gave Shadowman 2 90/100.

Best Star Wars game ever: TIE Fighter. Recently dug it out again and fuffed about with Win2k until I got it to work.

Jesus Christ is it harder than I remember.

I've played Rogue Leader for a good few hours round a mate's house (NTSC version). While I was generally unimpressed by the gameplay, everyone else there was lapping it up. So, if you haven't been spoiled by TIE Fighter, you'll probably love it.
  • Jesus: Action Figure #60 10 years ago

Toby - I have to agree with your choice of Tie Fighter. As I remember, it was VERY hard, but extremely satisfying. Esp. when ordering Darth himself around.

Best Star Wars game ever: TIE Fighter. Recently dug it out again and fuffed about with Win2k until I got it to work.

Tie Fighter was great. I really loved how they managed to get rid of that "bad guy" label, you really where fighting on the RIGHT side of the conflict, just like you did in X-Wing. Both those games are some of the best for PC, I'd still play X-Wing if I can get my soundcard to feed me some sound, and the challenge is just...overwhelming at times.
  • mentat #62 10 years ago

Course they are biased. Biased towards Starwars Games that'll let you play one of the best movies ever released!
If you don't like the scores/reviews, go buy an official Xbox or PS2 mag where they are biased towards their own platform...
Or better yet, go read a different website, and leave these boards free for the people who want to discuss the actual games rather than bashing platforms.

Tis gonna be hard work sitting there, must be a good 12 hours of movie.
I saw the original trilogy back to back in the cinema back in the '80s that was enough of a bum numbing experience. 5 movies might be a bit too much, especially as Episode II is 2 hours 22 minutes apparently.
  • skalmanxl #69 10 years ago

The day that Alien 4 went up at the movies in Sweden, I warmed up with watching all the three first ones back to back, then went out 15 mins before the 4th one started and went down to the cinema to watch the last one. Classy.

  • terminalterror #71 10 years ago

Don't get your hopes up for the IMAX thinking you'll get a huge screen, as when showing 35mm film (all normal films), it only takes up about 1/3 of the height and 1/2 of the width of the screen, still big, but nowhere near as big as a proper IMAX film. Thrust me, I saw Terminator when they had a classic films season of films late at night

Friends and I once went to see 4 ST films back to back, for like £4 or something. Nice to see a few blokes turn up in ST outfits, not a very English thing, but hey!

After 8 hours without a break you can imagine the pain!

  • Divebomb #77 10 years ago

Whilst pulling an all-nighter to get some pesky coursework in, my and my mate watched the entire 3rd season of Deep Space 9 in one go to keep us entertained.
  • Gestalt #78 10 years ago

"Looks like Hoths undergone a bit of global warming"

Not surprised with all those gas guzzling AT-ATs stomping around the place. Imagine the pollution those things must cause. ;)

"I'm the guy who didn't even see episode 1 yet"

To be honest you're not missing much.

"The day that Alien 4 went up at the movies in Sweden, I warmed up with watching all the three first ones back to back"

I did an Aliens all-nighter in London a few months back - all four movies back-to-back, with free Red Bull and Ben & Jerry's during the intermissions. Didn't end until about 7am. I tell you, there's nothing freakier than walking around central London at 7 o'clock on Sunday morning. It's like being in The Omega Man or something. ;)

"Friends and I once went to see 4 ST films back to back"

I can vaguely remember doing the original Star Wars trilogy back-to-back at a little local cinema when I was a kid. It must've been back in the mid 1980s when Return of the Jedi was still fairly new, so I was probably seven or eight at the time.
  • skalmanxl #79 10 years ago

It's like being in The Omega Man or something. ;)

Same in every city, but I'd imagine that it's even more noticeable in London, Uddevalla really doesn't compare to be honest.

While I haven't seen the Omega man...I get the idea.
  • burago #80 10 years ago

Watching 3 Alien Movies in a row, that’s nothing. I watched the entire Godfather series on DVD in one night and a lot of the extras. ha ha beat that!!
  • st3ph3n #81 10 years ago

Simpsons S1, Futurama S1 and Family Guy S1. I have watched all those in a sitting each, I'll do Transformers S1 really soon.
  • quantumsheep #82 10 years ago

Alien 4 was fine right up to the point the 'newborn' came along.

It sucked from that moment on. I even rate Alien 3 higher than the last one.

    I 10 Q ;o)
  • Gestalt #83 10 years ago

I must admit I quite enjoyed Alien 3. I know I'm in the minority on that though. :)

But that fucking newborn... My mates just couldn't understand why I was so upset after seeing Alien 4...

Pah B5 is one of the best SF series ever made, although the fifth season was rather disappointing with Byron and his happy-clappy telepath pals.

Yeah about 82 hours I think, although longer if you weren't a wimp and watched the movies too..

I did an all night Comic theme night at a cinema in Kings Cross in the mid/late 80's. Saw Akira there for the first time and swear I have never seen the same version again (this was before it came out on video over here). They also showed The Punisher, Captain America and some other bits I can't remember. My two lasting memories of the night are dragging my mum along (as I was to young to go alone)and having her really enjoy Akira (I was so proud) and the other was having the entire place erupt into cheering and applause when Captain America throw his shield for the first time.

Good review. This game is great and I *almost* agree with the score - personally I would have given it an 8. This is the very first game I played on my cube and it crashed after I finished the first level. I couldn't believe it! Ok, I have experienced crashes on all the next gen systems I own, but not the first time I booted one up and played a game. First impressions last you know....

But Spaced is a cut above, TBH.

  • Pirotic #110 10 years ago

Father Ted, like all other Sitcoms.. stops being funny when it becomes populour, Red Drawf was funny because it was so cheap and nasty.. the new series just removes that and its now lost its edge.

That would be a big pile, anyway what's really annoying about that line in Spaced is the fact that on the DVD commentary it's revealed that neither Simon Pegg or Edgar Wright had actually ever watched it and Jessica Stevenson who had, thought it was alright! So much for a complete indepth knowledge of SF! ;-)

Hawk The Slayer is complete pony though.

I haven't sworn so viciously at a game for ages. I'm sure my neighbours were wondering what the hell I was doing screaming "YOU C**T!" at the top of my voice at 3am. Repeatedly.

The only major gripes I have with it are the sudden ramp up in difficulty from the 'Razor' mission onwards, the 'fixed paths' of some Ties and the rather hard medal targets.
With the exception of the Academy. Going from relatively 'safe' missions with good shields to one with piss poor shields, Ties that seem to love to go Kamikaze on you, and laser fire from dozens of guns which now seems to concentrate on YOU alone is a bit harsh. Is it possible to get into the second Death Star without dying at least once from the laser crossfire? Fecking nails.
Also, accidentaly get in the way of a Tie who has a predetermined path and you're screwed.

Fab atmosphere though, especially the start of Hoth. If my neighbours don't call the police I may try and replay some missions too - only got 3 bronze medals.

"god-awful Bruce Willis vehicle called "The Siege"?"

Are there two Sieges, because the one I saw was actually rather good, had Denzel Washington as the lead actor, and only gave Bruce Willis a (relatively) small supporting role. :p
  • Toby #148 10 years ago

I actually saw The Siege when I was in the US (Florida, holiday, not New York), and dear god was that a mistake. Someone hit someone! CHEER! Arab guy... must be a terrorist, is a terrorist! BOO! The Arab is dead! CHEER! Etc etc etc.

Other fun film experiences in the US: Telling two women to SHUT UP after 20 minutes of high-pitched chat on a mobile through Blair Witch (me (from a few seats back, anonymously): "SHUT UP", her, to the phone: "someone just told me to 'shut up'", then a few seconds of silence, then with the chat again), and a late-night viewing of Toy Story 2, with two couples having sex in the back row. There were five people in the cinema...
  • terminalterror #149 10 years ago

the Phantom Edit (the version with all the shit bits taken out)

That can't be a very long film, just action sequences by my reckoning, that would make even less sense plot wise than the original
  • Gestalt #150 10 years ago

TBH Phantom Menace would have been a lot better if they'd just cut a few of the pointless scenes which broke the flow and got rid of the more ridiculous Jar Jar sequences, like the one where he's falling around tripping over guns and accidentally killing battle droids. I was practically groaning in dismay and covering my eyes at that point. Worst Star Wars scene. Ever. It made the Ewok party and Special Edition song and dance routine look good by comparison, and that's saying something.
  • Gestalt #151 10 years ago

Oh, and overdubbed the bad guys - the voice acting on those odd looking aliens was pretty awful from what I remember.
  • Toby #152 10 years ago

I've downloaded the (quite dodgy) VCD. I've only watched the minute long sample, don't want to spoil it for myself, but it looks pretty good. Much more spartan feel, like the opening scene in Episode 4 with Vader and the Storm Troopers. Some pretty silly dialogue though, "I'm just a simple man, trying to make my way in the universe"... right.
  • quantumsheep #153 10 years ago

Gestalt, I have to agree with a lot of what you say about Phantom Menace.

However, while Jar Jar was lamentable, my actual pet hate with the film was that Greedo (Rodian) kid. You know the one, Anakin's friend.

What a c**t. Especially when Anakin wins the pod race and he does that stupid dance.

My God, I can't even watch that bit. After spending millions on CGI to create Jar Jar, the pod race sequence, Naboo, the end battles etc etc they resort to a kid in a very, very bad mask as Anakin's mate.

I cringe every time I see the little bastard. And every time Anakin yells 'Yippee!'
  • otto #154 10 years ago

Nice to come back & read a good review of a stonking game and a half-decent thread with a few enjoyable rants, it even staggered on about halfway down before petering out into surrealism, all in all, a fine job chaps well done.

RL is without a doubt a superb game. Its beauty is that despite being seriously difficult in places it appeals also to people who are not normally fans of the genre and is quite forgiving of shiteness (you just don't get medals). Above all, as someone said, it's the atmosphere that sucks you in. This has displaced monkeyball and Luigi on my machine for the time being, and will do for a while to come. And now I've finally got my RGB cable, it looks even better - 'cept now I can see the jaggies...

Best sitcom ever: Young Ones (followed closely by League of Gentlemen).

Jaffa Cakes: you may be able experience the ultimate pleasure in Scandinavia too if you get 'Lu' biscuits (a Danone brand I think) - they sell jaffaesque cakoids under the name 'Pims' - but be sure to get the orange ones!
  • Gestalt #155 10 years ago

"After spending millions on CGI to create Jar Jar, the pod race sequence, Naboo, the end battles etc etc"

For me that was part of the problem - everything had that tacky fake CGI look to it, from the aliens to the space ships, all of which were horribly bright, gleaming and reflective. I prefer the models and muppets from the original trilogy, which had that nice "one not very careful owner" look to them.

"And every time Anakin yells 'Yippee!'"

    Eugh, don't get me started...
  • otto #156 10 years ago

"I prefer the models and muppets from the original trilogy"

Agreed. I just rounded off my return trip to the original trilogy last night and had this view reconfirmed. However you could also see where the series was heading in Episode VI with those bloody Ewoks and all the 'light relief'...

I'm pretty sure the day will come in the not-too-distant future when the current obsession with CGI effects will look as cheesy as the old Ray Harryhausen plasticine dinosaurs. A classic film will never earn that status on effects alone, there's got to be a bit more to it, Episodes IV & V had that but none of the others imho...
  • Toby #157 10 years ago

I prefer the models and muppets from the original trilogy

Ooooh, you're going to HATE Yoda come Thursday...
  • otto #158 10 years ago

Yeah, I heard, he's all CGI isn't he? & the review I read said he was the best thing in it... Oh dear...
  • Toby #159 10 years ago

He is all CGI. It doesn't look the same as Muppet Yoda.

Personally I don't see the problem. In ESB you know Yoda is being fisted by a puppeteer. In AOTC you know he was animated by a, er, animator. It looks different, but it isn't a problem (to me, at least).

It's a good time to go to the cinema indeed!

  • Jesus: Action Figure #183 10 years ago

    Coolio, gentlemen.
    Really looking forward to both.

Though as I'll be in LA I won't be able to post what I think of either for a week or so.

Don't miss me too much, guys ;o)
  • otto #184 10 years ago

So Jesus, I cunningly detect from your last few dozen posts that you're going to be in LA next week. Am I right? And what would that be for pray? ;)
  • Moonbender #185 10 years ago

He actually went as far as to say he was going to E3 here, so there's no real need to weasel it out of him.
  • otto #186 10 years ago

Wasn't so much a case of trying to weasel it out of him, as giving the poor guy a break - he's been saying it so many times with no-one picking up on it, I thought he deserved some recognition ;)
  • Moonbender #187 10 years ago

Oh I see. Well he's an ass because he's going to E3 and I'm not so I won't do him any favor. ;)
  • Jesus: Action Figure #188 10 years ago

    Otto -

Thanks for picking up on that ;o)

To be honest, it's my first time going so I'm quite excited!

Also, I was fishing for 'oh, Jesus, we'll miss your words of wisdom' which is what happened when you buggered off for a week...

Guess I'm not up to your level of stardom yet, eh? ;o)
  • otto #189 10 years ago

I will certainly miss the words of our lord Jesus Action Figure but I'm not gonna tell him cos I'm so jealous that he's going to E3 :p
  • Moonbender #190 10 years ago

As what, exactly, are you going to E3? Fanboy? Press? Developer? Publisher? Populace? Saviour doesn't count, they don't let those in anymore.

    "pants" was usually posted skalmanxl.
  • otto #192 10 years ago

StarStriker - you have a problem with that? You'd rather we all spoke American and said it "sucked"? Pants makes a lot more sense I'm sure you'll agree. ;)
  • Gestalt #193 10 years ago

Don't worry, we're all just sitting here with a bemused look on our faces.

"WHITT A BIG BOUNTY ON YOUR ASS" - what if you don't like coconut?
