Even though the review is pretty much accurate, I actually quite like it. GTA's 100-hour marathon is a bit daunting to a non-obsessive, so finishing the story in 6-7 hours sounds relatively achievable. Definitely worth renting.

Meh - thought this looked ropey on the trailers on TV - the framerate was dire.
Actually, come to think of it, i thought this sounded like a bad idea from day one...

It'll be interesting to see if the blanket promotion and publicity that EA are putting out to support the game will pay off for them in the usual manner (i.e. mass market consumer purchases game regardless of its good and bad points). Personally myself I think the films are classics (apart from, er, Part 3) but I have no interest in this game whatsoever. It just smacks of taking an honoured film property and slapping a generic sandbox games design on it. Cynical perhaps, but it leaves me cold.

HOWEVER. Was it worth a 6? So many games at the moment seem to be popping out the EG sausage review machine with a 6 at the moment.

I thought Mafia was ok ( I so wanted that to be great aswell ), again could have been a lot better, targeting was terrible, and cars !. I did only play on the xbox though. I wanted to custom the soundtrack much as I like Jazz guitar, I thought some Sabbath/Stones would have been great. I would love rockstar to do a take on the 1920/30/40's or as some else said a future version of GTA.

I guess there is a new review template on EG - they simply ask themselves 'Why this game shouldn't be given a 6/10?', write the review justifying stupendously higher and lower scores, and after an exhaustive discussion settle on 6/10.

;-)

By the way I still think EA has shown effort, respect and taste in trying to adapt the films to a game. Trouble is, they don't realize that not everything is a game.

Talha, this game had 6/10 written all over it from the moment it was conceived. Was never going to score lower (since despite what people say, EA dont make "bad" games), but it was never likely to do the licence justice, nor move beyond being a GTA clone.

i am starting to really doubt the reviews here on eurogamer. THey just dont seem to be in tune with what i think anymore and seem to go againts most of the review on metacritic. i was looking foward to this but i will ignore this review. i seem to only coem to eurogamer for the comments now.

@Furbs : That's basically what I meant. It doesn't totally suck, but the execution is hit and miss. Despite appearances, Godfather and GTA-style play are different fish.

@trevd72 : If the reviews are supposed to gel with what you think about a game, what is their point? This game is getting only OK reviews from most site, the only difference being that for EG OK is 6, while for others OK is 8. Metacritic is an excellent source, but I guess any blanket score is misleading. Read the reveiws, then make up your mind if you still want it bad enough.

I was expecting far more Godfather puns that there were. "The film, look what they did to this beautiful film" and such were really to be expected. Please try harder next time, as I won't be coming here in future if the expected pun quota is not fulfilled.

I read EG is because not only do their reviews almost always buck the trend, but they explain their reasoning behind the scores. I may enjoy a bad game, but I usually understand why the reviewer didn't.
If you just want someone to tell you that every game is 8 or 9/10 then go read IGN and Gamespy.

Well, I was kinda trying to say the same thing........ without being so blunt!

:-P

My point on the 6/10 thing is........ should the score have been a 5/10? If its just average and no more than that, put it slap bang in the middle of the rating.

@Blackdog

Agree with games DEVELOPED by EA tend to be mediorce, but it doesn't necessarily follow for games they just publish (Burnout, Black & White et al).

Maybe there are so many 6/10 reviews because there are so many mediocre games around at the moment? The problem is it's getting too easy to make a good looking game with fancy marketing that sucks people into thinking it's the next big thing, when in reality it's just the same old rehashed concepts. They're not neccearily bad games, they just make you not care about them after about an hour of playing. I blame the abundance of licenses that this industry thinks it needs to survive and the fact that accountants and businessmen are in control of this industry right now.

When a game comes along that (to put it in EA terms) thinks outside the box, EG are generally positive about it. Thats why I come here, the reviewers are looking for something different.

No surprises there. Maybe the on foot sections work quite well, but quite simply, after the massive variety and innovation displayed by San Andreas, surely this would feel like a step backwards...?

But y'know what, it doesn't really matter though, because this game will sell shedloads anyway. The publicity and the average dumb consumer will see to that.

ishigo: That's the biggest problem with revisionistic game development, delaying the game to add some feature or fix some stuff.

If it's not planned from the start it will never be as good as it could be. Because these features will only build on existing features. You cannot stray too far from the original design.

Please, just take a big knife and slice off all the excess crap and focus on what is good and what works. Don't tack stuff on, it will only act as fat.

The godfather should not be a third-person driving/action game. Do you ever remember Marlon Brando strongarming a bakery owner?

Imagine if they'd had the balls to make this a hybrid resource management / tactical shooter. It could have been genius. Send squads of goons out to extort honest folks and take down your rivals then, when the shooting starts, step into their shoes and direct your thugs to victory. Make and break alliances with the other families. I'm picturing something between X-com, Civ, and Full Spectrum Warrior (for the shooty bits). It could have been awesome.

Instead of this dreary waste of shiny plastic discs.

EA in game-by-numbers shocker.

I remain unconvinced this will sell, even with the patented EA marketing blitz. It doesn't seem to me that the Godfather license has that much mass market appeal.

What's really saddening is that it will probably sell by the bucket. If so, its position on the sale charts will also justify EA's decision to make a trilogy of this licence and both sequels will sell by the bucketloads too.

Hopefully (?) they will try to make an Godfather RTS/management (if Battle for Middle Earth is anything to go by) out of the licence.

It's name was Gangsters, with Gangsters 2 being the unimaginatively named sequel. Didn't really get on with either myself.

There was also a game called Gangland which I quite enjoyed, although wasn't critically received that well. That was a kinda simplified RTS where you extorted shops and the like.

Actually a bit gutted about The Godfather, but I will still give it a go myself. If nothing else, every review I have read says it is at least fun in parts.
