"And even though the visuals are technically amazing, we've never been comfortable with the rather camp, beefed-up, grizzled marine characters that we're supposed to sympathise with. Maybe if you're into body builders and Gridiron players this is your thing, but there's something instantly dislikeable about the macho posturing that every character in the game seems to consider a badge of honour. They're like the worst kind of college jocks, with gigantic pulsing necks, arms that look like they're literally going to burst with muscle at any time, and a predictable contempt for one another"

And yet I bet "Aliens" is your favourite of the movie series.

Seems like most of those also based the score on the potential of the online element - which until you get the full release will not really be rateable.

Nope, it came out in America today, they'll all have boxed copies and will have been playing the multiplayer already, probably why they all scored so highly.

"No mention of Sony bias yet? ;-) "

Yes - Eurogamer are t3h bi@53d!!!

Well they did get a PS3 rather early, and have been banging on about it for ages. So, one would think they are biased.

But I'll wait for the Edge score before deciding that! However, does seem a little strange how the 360 version of SCDA gets 9/10 (which was inferior to the XBOX version), FFXII gets 10/10 (when you spend most of your time watching rather than playing) and then GoW gets an 8/10.

But as usual, read the review, not the score...

"From what I can tell, the only thing it's been marked down for is a lack of empathy with the main character?"

it's only a really great, amazingly good-looking game. you can't waggle the controller at it and there's no Gambit system.

Not as good as Sensible Soccer 2006 then?

I've not played the game so I can't comment on how good it is but it must be REALLY broken if it gets less than the somewhat bollocksed up mess that was Sensi 2006.

I was hoping for a score like this, anyhow. If it scored below an eight i'd have considered canceling in favour of Rainbow Six.

I doubt many of the reviews gave the online element a proper play today. Have they really had time considering it is still morning in some areas of the US?

Simple fact is, I enjoyed SCDA more than this, if that counts for anything. An 8 suits this game fine once you see beyond the amazing visuals. The gameplay really isn't that amazing - sometimes a game just feels like an 8, and this is one of those :(

A predictable 8. Though the first half of the review reads very much like a 9. Confusing. Plus multiplayer not taken into account? Surely a guaranteed 9 then?

they predominantly are. there are also branching paths where the group splits in two. in co-op you have to cover one another from these paths (e.g. taking out a turret on one path that is pinning your friend down), but krudster didn't play co-op before reviewing this game, so bzzzzzzzt on that I'm afraid.

I think that's an excellent review krudster. The 1up review by comparison is pathetic and if Dan Hsu has any integrity he would pull it from the site after seeing the depth and breadth of yours.

Yes but my point is that experience can often be very different to the full on joe public experience. Where server and lag issues can effectively destroy the online experience. I hope the score goes up next week - I hope the online stuff works very well in practise.

Good review imo, the 1up review was shocking for the score, there's o way, after thos complaints, it deserved a 10. I think the game deserves a 9 though, from what I read there are some amazing set peices, and the sound is great aswell.

What does FFXII have to do with anything? Seriously, people are allowed opinions, even if you disagree with them.

@Yossarion - Resistance weapons really are very original, the soldier design is not ott bulky, and ICO was too short.

Oh teh noes! It isn't a 9! I can't bear the shame of preordering the game now!

In all seriousness, sounds like my type of game. Multiplayer should be a hoot, and over-the-top macho crap can be amusing, even if unintentionally so. And as for lack of longevity, I'd prefer 10 hours of diverse single-player entertainment to 20 hours of repetitive cut and paste room after room, which this most certainly does not look like.

Innovation? I'll wait for System Shock 3*cough* BioShock.

FWIW, I read the 1UP review and found it baffling that he awarded it a 10/10 after using at least half the review text to convey what's wrong with the game.

By comparison, the EG review is excellent and at least gives you idea why the game is fun.

Since when was 8 considered a bad score anyway?

Apply some common sense, average out all the review scores around the net and make your decision on that.

Its good to have the opinion of someone thats tired of shooters and hype, since there are a fair few people who read this that will feel exactly the same. Its all just opinion. I mean I read the FFXII review and it was like they were describing a different game to the offline MMO borefest that I played the week before, but I still respect it because the person reviewing it seemed to enjoy it... whereas I couldnt be more burned out on that genre if I tried.

If you need the opinion of a shooter fan then read the other reviews on the net, this is a good counterbalance for people that are somewhat tired with it all.

I'm not, roll on next friday!

Awesome. I can feel the fanboy indignation coursing through the thread. I can imagine them all, hunched over their computers and frothing at the mouth because someone on the internet gave a game 1 point less than they feel it deserves - despite never having played it :D

The biggest lol of all, however, is reserved for the twat bringing FFXII up.
