Just a comment about the auto-aim, there. See, I've switched it off, as I'd prefer not to have the assistance in where I'm shooting, but I notice that I'm still hitting stuff even when I've clearly been aiming several virtual feet to the side. What gives?

Tempted, my PC was not really up to it and the co-op mode is appealing.

Any tearing Stevas?

And another comment, this time about the surround sound. Have to agree, here. the surround really does make this game. I was well creeped out the other night when a deep diabolical chuckle rebounded around the back of the sofa.
Well creeped.
Possibly even more so than with those monks in that other game.

I'd say go for it. It's actually better than the PC version - sound is fantastic in 5.1 - and if there's tearing, I'm certainly not noticing it - and I'm a grumbly lad when I can't enable vsync on a PC title...

co-operative play over live. Now that's what halo2 should have had. Well done for implementing it!

Halo3 maybe? Or if were really well behaved maybe even via a live patch?

"Any tearing". Like it. Heh.
No, there's not, actually. Or very little. Put it this way: I didn't notice. And - it appears - if anyone can notice it, it's me.

Does stutter on occasion, though. But this I can live with.

I though that hitting start again on the pause screen give you the option to restart by pressing green or cancelling by pressing red? I may be wrong on that - though I certainly can't ever remember accidentally restarting the level.

Can you check? If it's what it says in the review... well, it's a pretty fucking big oversight, if you ask me.

I'll have a look, Genji, but I'm sure someone could confirm it before me. Two things spring to mind. One, on a number of occasions I'm sure I have caught myself before restarting the level because I've been given the option to cancel doing so. Secondly, perhaps this problem is restricted to the Special Edition? I didn't bother with that.

Riddick is certainly a lot smoother.
I'm quite happy with Doom 3. Perhaps that's just because it's the first game I've bought for my Xbox, like, I dunno... this year? That didn't have obvious tearing in it.

Guess I'm easy pleased.

Does it have the Doom and Doom 2 ports on the PAL version?

Just the special edition. The ports are perfect, bar one thing - the co-op modes are not traditional 'split screen'. Instead, you get two 4:3 ratio screens, side by side, scaled down to fit the width of your TV, with lack borders above and below. In other words, it's nigh unplayable on smaller screens. This does make sense I suppose, considering the originals weren't 3D, but surely they could have offered a 'squashed' version in traditional split screen? Anyway, on the plus side, the Xbox controller works really well with the old Dooms.

Co-operative over "Live". Since my best mate moved out of the area it suddenly becomes a whole different proposition. I had this on PC but my hardware didn't have the grunt to make the experience any fun. Any more than 2 animated characters on screen and it was down to 6fps for me! Oh hurry up, payday !

Thanks for the review.

Great game - seriously impressed with it. If you wanted to play Doom 3 but can't afford the nuclear ninja PC then this is a more than adequate substitute.

I really liked the whole Hellraiser in space feel too. But then I thought Event Horizon was a great film - which probably puts me in the minority.

But that's not how the auto-aim works in this game. You still need to hit the target in the first place, and then subsequently the aiming reticule "tracks" the target. It certainly looks a lot better than hitting the target even though you are aiming elsewhere.

The downside (as with all auto aim systems), is that you don't always hit what you want to, like the exploding barrels for instance.

hitting the back button allows quick save, the start button to save game, load, options, exit, etc just hit B to take you back into game, or A (first choice) to resume - can't recall the restart level option

All I know is I have auto aim switched off - so that there is none of this tracking nonsense - but I still appear to be hitting monsters with the pistol even when my aim is well off.

Hitting the back button will initiate the quicksave, yes, but you are then asked if you want to overwrite the existing quicksave (A) or cancel (B). That I am sure of. And I'm also pretty sure a similar option screen is shown if you press start immediately on pausing and select the restart level option.

But I could be mistaken.

As I said, I'm certain I've accidentally done this and managed to avoid the restart by pressing red. Is there no-one who has quick access to the game that can confirm this?

When you press start theres a 2-3 second delay before the menu comes up then when you press it again you get an 'unsaved info will be lost, are you sure? press green etc' so you'd have to be quite special to restart the level. That's on the special edition.

One annoying thing I've noticed is that when a new level is loaded the button to change from torch to weapon won't work. I have to press one of the cycle weapon buttons first, then it'll work. I changed the button config though but that's no excuse.

Bought the Xbox version (mostly because I pirated the PC game from a mate and I have a guilty concience) and seem to be enjoying it a whole lot more.
Not really sure why - possibly the more relaxed seating arrangement and bigger screen....

I really detest those pointless shuttered box rooms from which zombies appear. You're in a corridoor/room, you look around and see all is clear then, as you pass through, you get clobbered from behind because the bastards have jumped out of the walls! What are they doing in those functionless compartments - sniggering into their hands as I walk past?

This annoyance falls into my "When videogames cheat." file.

I had to laugh at the Pause game and reload bit in the review (presumably because the reviewer pressed A or something) because I have this game and have been playing it for over eight hours, not counting multiplayer and the co-operative modes, and I've NEVER once reloaded a save point by accident!!! I hit Back to quicksave during the levels, occasionally pausing the game to save it properly. How can anyone mess that up yet pass it off as a criticism?

Why not try being less... erm... clumsy? lol

Halflife 2 and riddick replayable? I disagree completely. But then i never replay a game so that isn't what i look for anyway.

Good afternoon
Not for me, I have had since saturday (limited edition, I have to say the box/tin is excellent) and I have played on and off for 3 days, the sound is very good, but game play isn't happening at all, looks good but that's it, maybe it's because I have just beat Resi4 for the 3rd time!. I think Riddick was and is a lot more enjoyable. This will be on ebay in the next couple of days. I have to complete SC CT before Jade Empire comes out, I have read 3 yank reviews and the lowest score so far is 9.7/10 looks great.

not much to say on Doom 3. Hated it on PC and they ask flippin' full price for the expansion (the cheek). Just wanted to say finally someone not blinded by the hype on Halo 2! I thought the campaign was complete bollocks too! Lost a lot of respect for Bunji on that one....er on with the doom 3 debate then lads....don't mind me....pretend I wasn't here......*cough* scuse me..........

Good review I guess. I love it personally. Im all for a bit of mindless game play! I dont think all games need to be strategic, great story or whatever. Sometimes I just want to be a bad ass that goes around shooting things just for the hell of it! Good bit of old school action.

And yeah Halo 2 single player was total crap, one of the biggest disapointments in my gaming career.

I've said it before in the forum, and - dammit - I'll say it again here: Bungie fucked things right the hell up with all that Arbiter nonsense. They did all that hard work getting me immersed in their little game world for the first Halo, then they kicked me right back out by forcing me to play as some alien I didn't give a shit about. I didn't buy Halo 2 to play as some bleeding alien; I bought it because I wanted to kick more arse as the chief.
Wouldn't it have been much cooler if you'd been forced to play through the campaign the first time as the chief - with you running into this Arbiter at key moments - and THEN, when you'd completed it, you were given the unlockable option of playing through an entirely different campaign as the Arbiter (and running into the chief)?
Well, I think so, anyhow.

And while I'm here, that diabolical chuckling I was on about? It wasn't Doom3. It was old bloody nick playing his tricks again. The bugger. Always hiding behind my bastard sofa, he is.

And the XBL coop is fun 2 play 2! except, dont play with americans and such because the PL is really bad to my experience. If you didnt buy the PC version and have an xbx/xbl, this is definitly what you want to buy! if you already played it and dont have xbl, then there is no reason you should buy this.

Rite den lads lets get dis shit straight.
Halo 2 one player- absolute shit simply cause it has to be sooooo fuking boring. i dont even see whats so ummm cool bout master chief. a nob if u ask me i couldnt give a toss playing as him. Half life's character and story was excellent in comparison making the campaign so much beta...
Doom 3 i feel is brillient. it doesn't do enythin new but what it does, it does extreamly well. the weapons are chunky and the sound and images and monsters make it such an immrsive experience. play this on 36 inch, in the dark, by yourself and youll get wat i mean! the only annoying thing is the pdas and how cliches the fukin lockers are wid the numbers. Also the multiplayer deathmatch is the worst ive eva played so im forgetting bout it! but apart from that i wud reccomend this most certainly for xbox.
