Yep: it's the original CS, but shinier and with less maps.

Suttec -

I ordered the gold version. Yes, you get the extras if you're in the UK. But you have to pay $30 shipping.

I am very upset that this is the multiplayer part of HL2. I loved HL1 deathmatch. I dislike CS. I've bought my HL2 and have tried to give CS another chance, but I still dislike it. The last good deathmatch my flatmates and I had was in HL1. It makes me sad :(

You can get the stuff sent to you in the UK with gold, but it costs $$$ in postage. I thought gold was a good deal at $80 but when I came to buy, tax and postage to UK was added and it came to $130-140. I went with silver instead.

There's not really any point attaching a score, but its presence alongside Half-Life 2 will be considered when we review that.

Why?

It isn't a part of Half-Life 2. It's a separate game.

Shouldn't Half-Life 2 be judged for itself, rather than the side-dressing it comes with that isn't even apart of the game?

Counterstrike is a wierd game. Everyone knows that it is not the best game out there by any means but it so fun and addictive to play. I think the key mechanics for CS are the fact that every game is different and that when you die in CS you have to wait the whole round to play again. Now this will annoy most deathmatchers out there, but you tend to value your game life in CS. Much more than games like UT2004. And when you do die its usually based on the fact that you got sloppy so it then forces you to play the next round trying to correct your mistakes.

But why get so worked up when someone else does it? Bullets are still faster than someone running with a knife...

This game feels and plays like ancient history.

And it's still our favourite multiplayer first-person shooter of all time, marginally ahead of various flavours of Quake.

Yes, it's comparable in enjoyment to Quake 3 but are you seriously suggesting its in BF1942's league? HL2 singleplayer had better be very good indeed to jusitfy my cash. Also Day of Defeat used to be free and Im sure would have been again if Valve hadnt been so desperate for content, what a shitty move that was.

Ill happily give it a score - 5/10 by someone whose still pretty handy at it.

Added to EG's complaints I'm pissed that they still ignore the bug in the CT's standard pistol (although not suppresed it shows a suppressor to others) - effectively extending the weapon for no reason.
Very annoying and certainly more so since they are charging for it.

Seems like they're holding out until CS2...

TFC players are on the whole far less whiney than CS players, principally because they don't spend three quarters of the game dead. They don't have the time.

I totally believe that CS is an addiction for most people. The feeling I had when de_dust showed up on the rotation was the same feeling I had when plucking a cigarette from a new packet. It's a warm and fuzzy familiarity thing (and I've since given up both).

Additionally, a glance at Valve's Steam survey reveals most people's system specs won't run anything newer: the average 2GHz CPU and GeForce4 MX will move CS along just nicely, but not, say, Battlefield.

Concept - its judged alongside HL2 as CS:S is the mutiplayer component of HL2. This is all you get mutiplayer with HL2 - although there are plans to release DoD for source at a later date.

CD:S is the only mutiplayer component included with the retail version of HL2.

Hopefully they will "dress up" HLDM when they do HL1 for source.

I beleive the next game for Valve is TF2 - but I will beleive it when I see it!

This is an absolutely awesome game. I will still be playing CS:Source in years to come.

I can hardly wait for some of the older maps to be released (de_prodigy, Militia etc etc).

The main issue with Counter-Strike for me was its community of players.
The player base is basically made up of young teens who take the game really seriously and actually believe it means something in real life to be a l33t CS player.

The community is also incredibly conservative and insist on playing the same basic maps forever so as to maintain their map dependant "skills".

To see all the same old maps that bored me to death a few years back still being played in this "new" version is the kiss of death for CS:Source to me.

Cool review - sounds the DB's even with the flaws. Bit upset about the left out maps like Assault + Militia + Nuke etc and the other flaws like missing character models.

Hopefully these will be input in the future - sooner rather than later?!

Was just wondering if anyone was playing this on a real shit PC comfortably?

Broken...At the start of the map, teams will rush to be first to the major bottlenecks, the whole round can be decided/balanced in the taking of the first positions. Whilst you are rushing for these first 15-20 seconds, you will not engage the enemy, therefore you don't need your gun. All you achieve by running with your gun out is pissing the queue of teammates building up behind you that you are blocking.
Simple rule..don't block the people who may just end up saving your skin!

I've no idea whether the cool kids play TFC or not but it's what I want so I'm just glad it's being given the make over.

Ahh happy times, building level three sentry guns and hitting your friends with a spanner. :-)

Yes, because when you put an object in your pocket, its weight magically disappears, so you can run faster. Isn't it obvious?

Also, the environment shadows iin these screens look just like, if not worse than, the original CS. Is this because of the reviewers hardware?

I really got disappointed. Nice graphics and all but where did the gameplay go? Not the same feeling as in 1.6 Not same depth in the game mechanics, I would give it a 7/10.

And 1.6 9/10

Its got nothing to do with weight. It's simulating the fact that you can run faster with a rifle over your shoulder than when holding it in both hands. That, and the fact that its a good gameplay fudge - you can go faster but its risky.

"In the end, the idea turned out to be so good that Valve also decided to remake Day of Defeat, Team Fortress Classic"

Are they officially re-making TFC? I heard that they weren't bothering because there was no community left.
