I'm very curious to see this. It is really hig in my want list, along with Makai Kingdom... but looking at my collection and seeing an unfinished Disgaea + FFX combo, and two untouched games such as Lucifers Call and FFX-2 well... maybe I should wait before getting these two...

I've played the NTSC version for a long time. The game seems funny at first, but after some hours it's getting DISSAPPOINTING...
The main storyline is dull, I've got really bored with this game.
There are some funny dialogues, beautiful drawings (& stuff), but it's not enough.
In my opinion 6/10.

"To add insult to injury, you'll perhaps use 20 per cent of the things you find to further your quest. Yet still you continue to stockpile potions and elixirs and herbs and phoenix-downs like a fat, middle-class businessmen caught in the headlamps of a national petrol shortage.

Then, after all that, you just use your bright-eyed mage to heal your team when need be, leaving your precious items tucked away untouched and redundant."

It's true... it's all true...

Can anyone think of an example of an RPG where you nip into a guy's house to steal stuff from his chests and he tells you to sod off and/or calls the police?

Didn't Fable do that? If you got caught rummaging around in some bloke's sock drawer he'd get the rozzers after you.

Indeed, if you're caught stealing in Fable, you have to pay a fine. Refuse to pay the fine, and the police will brutally murder you. Or, if you're strong enough, you'll brutally murder them.

this looks rather cool - I thought secret of mana was awesome even though I didnt complete it - I kept getting killed by some sort of fire dragon I think (long time ago). on a side note are there any decent RPG released over here for the DS?

The almighty Fallout 2 had the occasional character that would attempt to remove your torso from your legs with his auto-shotgun if you tried to steal, and I'm sure I can remember another one too, I just can't picture it off the top of my head.

He's right though, I finish most games without using a single 'one-shot' item, "just in case I run out of magic at some point" or whatever.

You could get caught stealing in Morrowind.

But you'd have to be pretty damn stupid

Minor correction: Eternal Mana was developed by Gust, not Nippon Ichi or Koei. Otherwise, the review is spot on with my opinion of the game.

Baldur's Gate (PC) did that. You couldn't steal unless you weren't being watched O.o and even then I think it would upeset some of your NPC's anyhow :)

Breath of Fire-one of the chests in a house in the city made of gold triggered the guy kicking you out the house.

Beat me to it! I was just about to mention Breath of Fire.

Atelier Iris is a great game and, just because I always mention the music, the soundtrack is nice too!

feverishly buying things you don’t need from shopkeepers you don’t care about

...and you don't mention the super-cool Veola and her shop, plus all the lovely dialogue between her and the rest of the team? Not fair! :)

Nice game, a bit too samey for my taste though. It's a very weak 8/10 IMO.

I found it to be a pretty weak game overall that didn't really hold my interest. The music is cute and poppy, which fits the atmosphere and tone of the game well. In any case, I hope they iron out the bugs and glitches from the US version when it's released here.

Septerra Core had shopkeepers that would get angry at you if they caught you stealing. Plus if you were not caught in the act, but stole too much, prices would go up and shopkeepers would tell you that "with crime so bad" they had to raise the prices.

I think Arcanum made it possible for you to get caught stealing, too.

In Fallout 1, there were several ocasions when NPCs would become aggressive towards you if they caught you tyring to steal their stuff.

Planescape Torment would have you steal successfully only if not watched and only if you were a thief or had a thief in your party.

That's all I can remember for now.

Ring of Darkness (speccy, Dragon32) let you nick items way above your current tech level (blasters when you could only buy daggers, etc), but if you got spotted it was a rapid move to the exit or deathbyguards.

This still doesn't answer the question of what the shopkeepers do with what you sell them. I mean, there isn't much of a market for a superflous giant sword is there...maybe in the black market?
