R.U.S.E. PS Move support confirmed

But no Kinect for 360 version.

The PlayStation 3 version of real-time strategy game R.U.S.E. will support PlayStation Move, Ubisoft has confirmed.

The publisher showed off Move with the PS3 version of the multi-platform WWII RTS today at a hands-on event in London.

Using the Move device as a pointer, players can select units, build structures and pan the camera.

Selecting an area on the map and pointing the controller down zooms the camera in. Pointing upwards moves the camera out. A flick to the right brings up a menu on the left hand side of the screen. Another flick takes you out of the menu.

Senior producer Mathieu Girard told Eurogamer that developer Eugen Systems and publisher Ubisoft only started integrating Sony's tech into the game "four or five weeks" ago.

"I wasn't sure if it was just going to be a gadget," Girard said, "but it turns out it's a very cool and natural controller. We're very excited about it."

Girard reckons using Move to play the game provides "the most enjoyable experience", but admits using a mouse and keyboard to interact with the PC version is "the most efficient".

Unfortunately for Xbox 360 owners, there are no plans to support Kinect. Girard said the stumbling point was having to play standing up while using Microsoft's rival motion-sensing tech.

R.U.S.E., due out in the UK on 17th September for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360, was delayed in order to deal with "massive feedback" from fans.

It's inspired by tabletop strategists, and allows you to deceive your opponent using ruses - hence the name.

There's loads more in our impressions of the beta.

Did he really say that the stumbling block was having to stand up to play with Kinect?

So, are those rumours true then? Wow, Kinect is becoming a laughing stock.
  • Eraysor #2 2 years ago

Indeed, Kinect is looking increasingly rubbish as time passes. Also, I'd never buy this on PC considering Ubisoft's lovely DRM.
  • TheDudesRug #3 2 years ago

I agree, I don't want to have to look at Mrs Rug's fat arse any more than I have to at the moment.
  • makeamazing #4 2 years ago

Well you have to remember this game is an RTS so precision is whats key... something that you wont get with Kinect (selecting precise units etc), so i wouldnt have expected this to be available for it, but it is another type of game that a pointy controller will do well for though.

The argument has always been that PC games are better for this type of game, and the controllers on the HD consoles were not really appropriate, so it is a bonus of the Move controller because it adapts well to this better than a normal controller.
  • RodHull #5 2 years ago

I don't fully understand why you need to stand in kinect. Can it not recognise leg from sofa?
  • Markitron #6 2 years ago

Damn, that just makes sense. Almost makes me wanna play an RTS on a console. Almost
  • TopKatt #7 2 years ago

Microsoft have definitely got to to sort out the sitting down issue if they want Kinect to be anything more than a seldom used novelty and, at anywhere between £100 - £150, it's got to more than a novelty to be worth a purchase.

Any news how well the move controller works with the game.
  • androidave #9 2 years ago

Increasingly it seems move is going to be the better choice for proper gamers, while kinect does look good, the lack of presicsion, the lag, having to stand up to play it? Its going to be fun for all of 5 mintues.. somewhat like the wii.. weres with move, its more, well.. useful.. tbh I can see microsofts system being a complete flop, casual gamers won't buy it because they already have a wii and core gamers won't buy it because you can't play core games with it.

"...while kinect does look good, the lack of presicsion, the lag, having to stand up to play it? Its going to be fun for all of 5 mintues.."

So in which way does it look "good" :)
  • fongy #11 2 years ago

My only worry with this game is that I was all hyped up for "End War" (remember that?) with the "voice activated controls" - which a) didn't really work, and b) the game was pretty dull...
    :(
I REALLY REALLY REALLY want to like this though....
    And a bonus with Move...
I have both PS3 and 360 - and I do have to say, I thought all of the "new controller" hype was a bit cr@p - I have to say, I'm warming to Move a lot more! This, Heavy Rain, KZ3... I think it might just take off...
Kinect? Forget it! Have you seen that video with the kids playing that race game (essentially most racing games would have to be controlled like this) - no chance! take about sore arms and looking like a complete d1ck!

    @RodHull
Apparently it confuses knee and hip joints when the player sits down.

Always prefers X360 over PS3 for multi platforms etc, most time proves to be the right decision ie slightly superior version etc.

However it's pretty clear that MS are already losing the motion control battle, too expensive, not hardcore enough, too much focus on casual scene and so on. I m hoping MS will get seriously punished for getting priorities wrong.

Well done to Sony for being more considerate of the tech, audiences, games.

Opposite of what they did for launches of PS3 and PSPGo.

Still the proof is in the pudding and post Xmas 2010, we ll declare judgement.

On the assumption that this game turns out great, this would make it Sony 1 - Microsoft 0.
  • davisorle #15 2 years ago

Too bad that I dont like R.U.S.E. ever since i last tried enjoying it. I really did try but the game as cool as it fiirst looked and seemed to me I was dissapointed to see it was no actual fun.. And imagine that was through Steam on the PC. So no go for a console choise either.
  • HisDudness #16 2 years ago

I hope Move leads to getting more variety of games - that play well - on the platform. If it is a legitimate control scheme for RTS, than maybe we'll see some genuine strategy titles on console (Starcraft and Civilization would be great!)

Just out of curiosity, is there anything stopping MS from releasing a controller for Natal? Or is the camera / controller combo a proprietary scheme for Sony?
  • Nighthawk_08 #17 2 years ago

I think that we will see this quite alot. (multi format games using move and not kinect). Because with move they aren't trying anything massively different, and I love that.
The controls aren't alien, in a way it's similar to using a mouse and keyboard or wii, obviously. I think with kinnect, apart from all the massive flaws we already know ( lag, can't stand., no buttons.....) it's a completely new way of controlling a game. This means developers will have to spend time and money investing in a way to implement it into their games.
I feel that kinnect is gonna have to be used in sync with the normal xbox 360 controller if it's to ever reach out to us gamers because the biggest flaw to me, by a mile, was the lack of physical buttons. This way u could still play fast twitch games like cod or halo and fund something cool for kinnect to do. Anyways peace out guys, best go back to doin work!!!
  • drumbaby #18 2 years ago

You can play Kinect sitting down if you buy the Xbox Trouser Controller, a kind of neon body suit for your lower extremities. complete with rumble and brownian motion.
  • Haerger #19 2 years ago

    ^^^^^

    Move is similar to mouse/keyboard.
  • CaptainQuint #20 2 years ago

To the people who positived my comment above: Of course, this game could yet still turn out to be a pile of shite, so don't count your chickens just yet.

Not that I'll notice either way - since I'll be far to busy playing Halo Reach to care.
  • IronGiant #21 2 years ago

At last a developer has confirmed exactly what MS don't want people to know, not being able to sit down and play a game is farcical!! They should for get consoles and just install natal at all the David Lloyd gyms where it would probably be quite popular.
  • Nighthawk_08 #22 2 years ago

Wen I said that move was like a mouse and keyboard I'm referring to the principle of one device acting as a pointer via movement and the other device doing the majority of input by pressing buttons/keys. Not comparing them just saying that it's not a massive deal for any developer to implement move into their games, since we've had keyboard and mouse and/or wii mote and nunchuck for a long time now
  • xenoss #23 2 years ago

I hope they're not delaying this game AGAIN to include Move support. They've done that a few times now. I played the PC beta and it was a wonderful game.

It is really too bad it'll have the Ubi DRM (and that horrible cover art). I'm most certainly not going to play this game on console, and with the DRM most certainly not on PC either. It still pains me that the horrible DRM is forcing me to not get this game despite it being a great game.
  • Mkwone #24 2 years ago

'i'd rather a slight hand movethan waving about to achieve the same thing. It honestly just doesn't interest me for this type of game '

Well if move can pick up sub millimeter movements as reported then you shouldn't have to have great overstated movements. Hopefully just a slight twist or turn effectivly pivoting the controller in your hand.
  • GreyBeard #25 2 years ago

Its funny how people forget about air mice. Technology's been around for years, even Nintendo had to buy some of their patents for Wii.
  • Brodie #26 2 years ago

How are people with Parkinsons going to play this?
  • Dizzy #27 2 years ago

Motion controls are for party games, ask the Wii.
  • Mkwone #28 2 years ago

Blame the Wii more like. Why does motion control have to mean low standard casual games?

Motion controls can work but we've been burnt by poorly made wii games.
  • Zeburdee #29 2 years ago

I was quite looking forward to the potential of Natal/Kinect until its presentation (or lack of) sucked balls at E3. Little did I know that MS were busy designing it to become the next HD-DVD drive.
  • Steroyd #30 2 years ago

Just out of curiosity, is there anything stopping MS from releasing a controller for Natal? Or is the camera / controller combo a proprietary scheme for Sony?

Only MS' own hype of "controller free gaming".
  • makeamazing #31 2 years ago

@Steroyd - exactly, if your going to pay £100+ for a non controller system, you had better not need a controller or its just a pointless and expensive exercise. And as you say the whole PM "Controllers are so difficult speech". There is still time for MS to pull something back, but they need to start showing what games it is going to be used in... and i dont mean the overall pap like river rapids.

Move has two primary methods of "pointing" one that's more natural for drawing as you feel like you're applying directly to the screen, it takes larger arm movements as the camera tracks the position of the lit sphere. The other method's like aiming a laser pointer, just aiming with the wrist, using the internal sensors to determine how the controller's angled - so which way the end is pointing.

"Just out of curiosity, is there anything stopping MS from releasing a controller for Natal? Or is the camera / controller combo a proprietary scheme for Sony? "

Well apart from the comments made by the other two about Microsoft having to eat a huge lump of humble pie it won't happen.

Nintendo owns a pile of patents for Wiimote type stuff - made by themselves or from peeps like Gyration
Sony has pretty well patented the "accelerometer being tracked by a camera" combo end of things

I am guessing that there is too much "prior work" to patent "camera tracking a ball" type stuff, so they could do that but without the accelerometers in your hand at the same time, precision will be bad

    @CaptainQuint

"On the assumption that this game turns out great, this would make it Sony 1 - Microsoft 0. "

And gamers should care about that Why?
