R-Type Dimensions on XBLA this week

2D and 3D cuddle up by the fire.

Microsoft has said R-Type Dimensions will be out on Xbox Live Arcade this Wednesday, 4th February, for 1200 Microsoft Points (GBP 10.20 / EUR 14.40).

Dimensions contains classic side-scrolling shooters R-Type and R-Type II. Plus, there's a new Infinite Mode to up the challenge, and flashy 3D graphics can be swapped with the 2D originals on the fly.

Local co-op is in, and uses a ship collision and revive system to mix things up a bit. And, because we're in the 21st Century, a continue option and stage-unlock feature have been bundled in.

R-Type began life in arcades back in 1987, and followed spaceship Arrowhead battling for mankind against evil alien Bydo. Original developer Irem has been replaced by Tozai Games for this version, and the latter will also deliver retro remake Lode Runner on Xbox Live Arcade soon.

Look out for our thoughts as soon as we can think them.

    1200 points. Oh the humanity!!
  • Xerx3s #2 3 years ago

Fuck that. I'd love to buy it but not for that price.
  • Malek86 #3 3 years ago

Normally I'd buy this without even looking at it. But for 1200 points, I'll first want to try the demo and see if it's worth the price.
  • bad09 #4 3 years ago

MS look, if 1200 points is the norm now for anything half decent you need to review the points system I'm afraid. If I want to spend £10.20 on PSN I can, with you I have to pay more. It wasn't that big a deal at 800 but now you jacked up the price....

    Anyway tempted by this.
  • Doctor_What #5 3 years ago

@ bad09: I've stuck away from MS points generally - when I first tried to use them I had to go into shops to buy them, which seemed a bit beside the point for DLC so I've stuck with PSN's actual money. What's the issue with the points? You say you have to pay more? In what way?
  • Domovoi #6 3 years ago

Yet when paying with actual money you have to pay transaction fees every time, whereas with a point system you pay them once for a big bundle of points. Might be cheaper in the end.
  • the_dudefather #7 3 years ago

Less people should have bought braid, that would have shown 'em
  • Xerx3s #8 3 years ago

Domovoi: Errr, no. I've never paid transaction fees. Neither IRL nor online.
  • Domovoi #9 3 years ago

If you pay with a credit card, you have.
  • bad09 #10 3 years ago

    @ Doctor_What

You buy points at 400, 800, 1000 etc.

So, the way MS price stuff, if you buy a game you normally spend more than the actual cost of what you buy. They do this on the the hope you waste the left over on pics/themes etc.

I never really liked the system but got on with it (and even wasted the leftover at times like a good little 360 owner) but now with the higher price point and with PSN's buy at price (even tho there is a fiver minimum), I kind of think it's time for a rethink.

  • Lutz #11 3 years ago

Domovoi: No you don't. If you walk into a shop and buy something for £100, then you pay £100, doesn't matter if you pay be card, cash, or cheque. The company will lose a percentage of that cost if you pay by card, but either way, you pay £100. You as a customer don't take the specific hit for that fee, the company that you're buying from does.
  • bad09 #12 3 years ago

Yeah, I pay no fees if I pay on a c/card either. I think you should move to another card Domovoi :)
  • GreatUncleBaal #13 3 years ago

Good news, if a little overpriced, but it looks as though 1200 pts is now the standard. NOW BRING ME GRADIUS.
  • DDevil #14 3 years ago

  • Beek4257 #15 3 years ago

    @Lutz

And retailers roll over the cost of credit transactions on the customers offcourse ...
  • riz23 #16 3 years ago

    1200 pts = No Sale.
  • Dizzy #17 3 years ago

    Bought!

Absolutely love R-Type. Have all the versions for all versions of Gameboys/DSes ;)
  • homerramone #18 3 years ago

    About time !

1200 pts its a little steep tho. But who am I kidding... I know ill get this cos its pretty sweet.

I guess the justification is that its 2 games since you get Rtype and Rtype 2. At that price tho they couldve at least given us a version of Rtype LEO - which I dont think ever made it into production... but can be played in MAME.

1200 for what is two games (R.Type 1 AND 2), with loads of extras. Thats pretty good value as far as I'm concerned. Better than blowing 1200 on the buggy unfinished mess that was Castle Crashers.
  • GamesProgrammer Verified Games Team Programmer, Eutechnyx Ltd. #20 3 years ago

Think ill wait to see if it appears on PSN for a fraction of the price, like the penny arcade titles, i love R Type but i have many versions of it and im not paying over a tenner for a downloadable remake.
  • miiiguel #21 3 years ago

It should be more expensive, that way I'd rank higher in the leaderboards.

    I kid, I kid.

  • Malek86 #22 3 years ago

Well, now that I think about it, I paid 1000 WP for that thing called Gradius Rebirth, so 15€ for this (HD-leaderboards-stageselect-etc.) actually seems like a very good deal. Also, I've been dragging around 480 points for several months and I don't know how to use them, so I'll just buy another 800 and get this. Meh, scrolling shooters fans like me are just too easy to rip-off.

On the other hand, I do hope Under Defeat won't be more than 800 points, if it's going to be an almost-direct port like Ikaruga and THE.
  • MisterFahrenheit #23 3 years ago

I played R-Type Leo in an arcade in Edinburgh in the early '90s. It was set at a volume so loud it almost made me involuntarily piss myself.
  • BigE0n #24 3 years ago

Aghhhhh I only have 1100pts left on my account god DAMN IT!!
  • mattigan #25 3 years ago

Although I am probably going to get this if the demo is any good, I still prefer Gradius
  • actionfitz #26 3 years ago

at that price they better send someone round to suck my dick too.
  • AllenSpawn #27 3 years ago

Picked up r types 1+2 + delta for a couple quid a pop, from jap psn. And they are also playable on psp!

  • Redeye #30 3 years ago

*prepares for some serious blasting/screaming at the telly*
  • stepneg #31 3 years ago

To expensive, would probably have caved and bought it at 800 though.
  • bdgr #32 3 years ago

It's probably the only game that i really love, yet am completely and utterly shite at!!

(1200 points is a lot considering i'll probably not get past the 1st level - i never do!)
  • jim1975 #33 3 years ago

people think £10.20 is expensive..... really.
  • sneetch #34 3 years ago

    @jim1975
people think £10.20 is expensive..... really.

More that it's bad value than it's expensive, it's not about whether you can or can't afford something but rather whether you think it's worth the asking price.

I think it was put best in "Arby and the Chief" when they were talking about the price of DLC:

Master Chief: w/e. ur just 2 p00r 2 affoerd teh new maps.
Arbiter: It's not a competition about who has the most money, you fucking idiot. It's about a personal sense of worth. But I guess that's a concept that's too complex for your hopeless, juvenille, idiotic brain to understand.
    *silent pause*
Master Chief: hahhahahhah. ur p00r. u cant affoerd stuff.
    Arbiter: Sigh.

Edit: Just to clarify, I'm not saying you're like the Chief, just that I loved that scene and thought it was a perfect example.

I resisted Braid because it was 1200 Pts. and I will resist about any Game for that price.
    Gimme Loderunner!
    Now!
    For 800 Pts.
    Thank you.
  • MilkYMoO #36 3 years ago

I'd pay double the price, I love r-type so much. I can't wait.
  • Domovoi #37 3 years ago

Yeah, I pay no fees if I pay on a c/card either. I think you should move to another card Domovoi

That's how credit cards work... You pay a transaction fee when you pay with a debit card too. You may not -notice- it, but you do.
  • Rev.StuartCampbell #38 3 years ago

    1200 points? Fucking idiots.
  • bad09 #39 3 years ago

    @ Domovoi

"That's how credit cards work... You pay a transaction fee when you pay with a debit card too. You may not -notice- it, but you do."

I thought cards work by fleecing interest? ;)

All I know is what they charge I pay and that's all that comes out no charge or fee for credit or debit card, if this fee is in the price I certainly never noticed an increase in cost if I chose to pay for something on a card so the store must take a hit on it - which is all good by me!

  • Ryze #40 3 years ago

    Bloody rip-off!!!

    But I want it anyway!
  • DAN.E.B #41 3 years ago

outrun will probably be even more!

id like to play gradius too but i preffered parodious that was one weird game!
  • Gnort #42 3 years ago

I remember when reskins of retro games were 400 MSP.
  • bad09 #43 3 years ago

Yeah but Gnort, it don't matter, it's only £10.20. I wipe my arse with a score, price hike FTW!
  • NBAoz #44 3 years ago

    @ Domovoi

"That's how credit cards work... You pay a transaction fee when you pay with a debit card too. You may not -notice- it, but you do."

    ------------------------------------------------------------ --------------

Entirely depends on the store you purchase from. All credit card transactions attract a small fee which is percentage based and charged by the credit card company/bank to the seller NOT the customer/buyer. Most stores won't charge a fee when you use a credit card, however some do pass on the fee to the buyer as a surcharge if they don't want to lose any profit margin on the purchase made. Also depends on the type of credit card you have. Generally stores will not pass on the fee if you use a MasterCard, Visa, etc, but if you use a card that charges higher merchant fees such as Diners or American Express then the store is more likely to pass on the fee to the customer. That's why some stores offer "pay less for cash!" or set a minimum for goods purchased, eg customer must spend over $20 if they want to use credit card.

Easily worth 1200 points. I need to finish The Maw first though.

@Miguel - Kid you do not. I agree with you though. LOL.
  • TRUTH #46 3 years ago

Rez HD, Street Fighter II Turbo HD, Braid, Castlevaina -SOTN...and now R-Type I & II with extra bits + flashy graphics - cool is Xbox Live
  • Ryze #47 3 years ago

    Yep! These games are fantastic.

I can't even complain about the price now, as it's 2 games, with online multiplayer, new features like the infinite mode (so I can see all of the levels and bosses for the 1st time), and they've revamped the graphics to full 3D!

I remember rushing home from school in around 1990 to play this on my Amstrad CPC. I've only seen the later levels because I learned how to trick the game into loading the wrong level off of the tape. I also still have the CPC version, and my CPC if I rummage thru my stuff. Not got a monitor though - so I can't power the damn thing up or display it.

Fantastic. 360 gaming bliss as usual!
