R-Type confirmed for iPhone

EA to publish shooter remake.

An iPhone version of classic shooter R-Type is on its way to the iPhone.

Looks like Electronic Arts has picked up the rights to publish the game, which will feature side-scrolling gameplay just like in the old days.

You can also expect eight levels, eight bosses and a wide variety of power-ups and ship upgrades. There are three different control modes - tilt, touch and virtual d-pad.

EA has yet to announce a price or release date for R-Type for iPhone, but we do know it's "coming soon".

I hope EA have done something about the difficulty level, it will be impossible on a touch screen if it plays just like the original. That said, this is EA, who crap out non-working iPhone games at Christmas time and never bother to fix them (e.g. C&C Red Alert).

How does a shooter work when your hand gets in the way of the screen?

    @Doctor_What

Perhaps they gimp it by having black bars down the side where the touch screen controls are. It's not going to be much fun if your thumb is obscuring the bullets. How does it work with that other shooter that's really good? The vertically scrolling, bullet hell one that got 9/10 on here.

    Don't mess it up mkay.

I don't know about horizontal shumps but the vertical ones can be played quite easily on the ipod touch. Your thumb can ofte obscure the ship though

If they can copy the Espaluda control scheme everything I will buy this no questions asked.

If they don't, it will most likely be a nightmare to play.

Espgaluda II lets you touch just behind your ship and drag it around from there. It's an insanely brilliant system and if R-Type can copy this then that's every reason to be excited. If not I can see the controls being a real problem.

What level was it with those annoying things that would go up and down the screen leaving a trail of things to block your path? If you didn't have some decent weapons you were doomed on that level.

It was the one after that, I think level 5 or 6 that I could never get past. Maze like level with near indestructible things blocking your path. Yeah thanks, thanks for killing the game for me!

Favourite level by far was the massive ship, that was genius level design. Still a great great game, even though I never saw the last few levels!

To EA - leave its sacred corpse alone please! You know you don't really need the money that much to warrant what will obviously be a butchered entry into the mainly decent R-Type archives.....

think about it, it doesnt really need to be done, and it won't work that well.

please stop now, before it's too late

    love,

    Bydo

Yeah, that was the level I hated. I think I broke my Gameboy's screen because of that level. Infuriating design that I'm pretty sure crossed the boarder into 'unfair' territory.
