QuakeCon relocates to Gaylord Texan News

PC Xbox 360 PlayStation 3 News by Tom Bramwell

30 June, 2009

Id Software has announced a last-minute change of venue for this year's QuakeCon event, which takes place between 13th and 16th August.

Originally set to occupy a few massive corners of the even more massive Dallas Hilton Anatole, the event now moves just outside the city to the Gaylord Texan, where it took place in 2004 and 2005.

Id is currently finalising the transition and has advised anyone with hotel reservations that they have been cancelled and will need to be rebooked with the Gaylord Texan - fortunately at an equal or lower rate.

Despite the change of venue, QuakeCon still promises all its usual delights, including the Bring-Your-Own-Computer LAN party with space for 3,000 gamers, the sponsored tournaments, the exhibition hall (or free t-shirt jamboree, in my experience) and of course the Friday keynote, where id has previously unveiled the likes of Rage and Quake Live.

Eurogamer is hoping to be there again this year. Never been? Check out our 2007 write-up for a summary: Peace, Love and Rockets.

Incidentally, last year's QuakeCon dovetailed - rather amusingly - into the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World (PAW) convention at the same venue, which did at least mean I had the bar to myself for a couple of days at the end.

I still don't get what kind of person opens a hotel called "Gaylord" in Republican, God-fearing Texas.

I knew a 'Gaylord' once. Bit of a misnomer, as he wasn't gay. Didn't know he opened a hotel in Texas. To be honest with you, I'd have thought he'd have changed his name my deed poll first chance he got.

Perhaps he was a 'gaylord' afterall.

I remember seeing a Gaylord neon sign in Hong Kong, turned out to be an Indian Restaurant.
