Q3A and Doom II XBLA at QuakeCon

Both playable, so both out soon hopefully.

The long-awaited Xbox Live Arcade port of Quake III Arena - Quake Arena Arcade - is on show at QuakeCon in playable form, suggesting an impending release.

Reports from the Dallas show also bring news of a Nerve Software-authored XBLA port of Doom II. It too can be played at the show, which suggests it's not far off either.

id Software has previously collaborated with Nerve on the XBLA release of the first Doom game, which came out around three years ago and recaptured our hearts.

Quake Arena Arcade, meanwhile, was announced at QuakeCon two years ago and is another collaboration - between id and Pi Studios.

I prefer Perfect Dark. But thats probably because ive always played games on consoles and the nostalgia for PD will be incredible.

Can't believe Q3A plays well with a controller. It's way too much twitchy quick snap boom gameplay.

As much as I enjoy FPS games on a console I agree with Eraser: Q3A will not work with a controller. The gameplay is simply too fast and with one shot weapons like the railgun you absolutely need all the precision you can get to hit someone in a usually extremely small time window.

Then again I don't really care about Q3a; Doom II XBLA on the other hand will be instantly purchased and I will probably take the next day off so I can play the whole night long. Something I haven't done for a few years now but Doom II should be worth it.

By the way: Wolfenstein is not available in my country (Switzerland) for whatever reason; I really hope it's not because of the Swastikas and Nazis but if it is I sure as hell hope that Doom II won't suffer the same fate because of the two Wolf3d bonus levels.

I enjoyed Q3A on Dreamcast, and that only had one analogue stick. Playing online was fun, there was a one second delay between pressing fire and it actually firing. Made it impossibly hard, but somehow made railgun kills infinitely more satisfying.

Long awaited? This is the first I've heard about it. Oh well.

I too had Q3A on Dreamcast and it was more than playable. XYAB buttons for movement and analogue for aiming if I remember correctly. Two analogues will be fine.

if Doom II is 400 points I'll probably buy it.

    Not a point more though.

Doom 2 will be 800 points I'm sure, same price as Doom when it was originally released as well. It'll be well worth it as well!

I hope they incorporate the Co-op into the achievements this time.

Yes was sad to see I couldn't play through with mate and earn the achievos!

how would the achievements work on co-op, though? you have infinite respawns on the co-op so it'd make them trivial, and i love the fact that doom on ultra-violence, etc, is balls hard! maybe they could do it so you each have just one life, but that's a bit shit as well. i dunno how they could make it work and still be fun/challenging because doom doesn't have quicksave or checkpoints (and rightly so!).

Doom 2 and Q3a for XBLa? Yes please. Doom 1 is just about my most favourite game (only toppled by 2).

Doom 2! Hurrah! Now if only they'd include Team Onslaught's deathmatch levels with it... ;)
  • bumgut #14 3 years ago

Loved Doom on XBLA so Doom 2 will be insta buy

  • Vortex808 #15 3 years ago

Doom is just about my favourite game ever, so doom II will definitely be purchased!
  • Sharks #16 3 years ago

Woohoo! Doom is my most played 360 game by a long shot so Doom 2's a certified instant purchase, never played Quake 3 either so now's a good time to see what all the hubbub is about. Great news.
