Pyro denies reports of new Commandos

The internet's been up to its old tricks again.

Update: Pyro Studios has rubbished claims of a new Commandos game, calling them "totally false" and wishful thinking on the part of Gamer.nl.

"The news story that Gamer.nl published is totally false," Pyro told Eurogamer Spain. "We always had in mind to bring back to life the Commandos series; this isn't something new, but nowadays there's nothing official or decided and everything is still a wish, nothing else."

"I think that the Gamer.nl journalist turned the wish into news, and he quoted things that nobody said (I was in the gamescom and we always said to whoever asked, and was a lot of people, that perhaps in the future but nothing now).

We're only focused in the Planet 51 game and this is the only game that we're working on," Pyro added, pointing out that the Commandos mobile game may have caused confusion.

Original story:Pyro Studios reckons "the time is right" for Commandos to return, and so has set about bringing the real-time strategy series back to life.

"We're definitely working on a new Commandos, the time is right for it," Pyro Studios told Gamer.nl (translated by Eurogamer Benelux).

The new game will go back to real-time strategy basics and ignore FPS and 3D transitions that Pyro admits were bad choices. This new instalment will feel a lot like Commandos 2, which was excellent, and awarded 9/10 on Eurogamer by a fresh-faced Tom Bramwell.

Pyro's currently working on a videogame adaptation of Planet 51, a Sony Pictures film written by Shrek-maker Joe Stillman. Once production wraps on that and the game ships this November, then can Pyro focus on Commandos again.

No platforms or dates were mentioned.

Hey! That's nice. It will probably feel more believable next time around, the first Commandos games felt a bit forced and "gamey" at times. I actually quite liked that weird 3rd one which played a bit like Hitman.

I loved the the first 2, Just because it felt kinda new for a WW@ game. After that, meh. I liked it gamey:p

The top-down view of the first 2 was smart, had a bit of an old school RTS feel.

I found Commandos 2 the other day when digging around in my old games draw and thought I should give that another go.....but my god it's a hard game!!

1 and 2 rock. Not played the 3rd... sounds like no bad thing judging from these comments...
  • matrim83 #8 3 years ago

@mortey C2 was the easiest of the lot. C3 (mostly because of some horrible timed missions) and the first two games were bastard hard though.

If it's true then this would be fantastic news. Just a few weeks ago I wanted to play this again but the first one just runs way too fast on my machine. A pity because I really enjoyed it back then.

Wow, what a nostalgia, I remember playing it at my friends house so long ago :D It was real fun, but really hard.

Commandos 2 was great. I'm in the mood for some revisiting.

.... Just found a copy on ebay for £1.95 inc postage. Yay :)

From Gaf: "The Spanish Eurogamer article got in touch with an actual representative at Pyro Studios, who denied that a new Commandos game is in the works. The English Eurogamer article is based on the original Dutch and Kotaku-reported article. I'm guessing the latter wasn't aware that a colleague had already discredited the original news." \0/

Commandos 2 was already easy and 3 was trivial to the original one + addon.
Those 2 games grab you by the balls and then enjoy to slowly squeeze them!

While you are at it Pyro: Fix the original Commandos so it can support Dual Core CPUs and not run way to fast ignoring every CPU limiting program out there!

Day 1 purchase for me if it's really in the tradition of Commandos 2! :)

Commandos had some really nice graphics. There was a standalone or expansion pak called Commandos: Beyond the Call of Duty. I remember playing a demo level of it, and found it really hard. The full game was said to be just as hard.
  • Der_tolle_Emil #17 3 years ago

I had Beyond the Call of Duty. Never managed to beat the first mission :(
  • dingo75 #18 3 years ago

You had to approach it like a puzzle game (think "Mikado";) to have success.
You had to figure out how to remove the Germans piece by piece without anyone noticing.
Otherwise you had no fun with those games because you died in like 10 seconds.

Loved Commandos 1 and 2, and the western game, Desperados, which was the same sort of look and gameplay. Get these on iPhone and DS and they'd make ££££££££'s. Commados 3 was a step in the wrong direction.

And while you are at it, my penny farthing needs refactoring so it can carry an iPod dock.

    Would be great, good game

"And while you are at it, my penny farthing needs refactoring so it can carry an iPod dock."

Hey, if they're going to sell it on Steam, it should have SOME hope of running on existing systems. Unfortunately, it doesn't.
