Pure "exactly the same" on PS3, 360

Black Rock promises demo, too.

Game director Jason Avent is confident that Pure will be exactly the same on PS3 and 360.

Speaking to Eurogamer, he said there was nothing to worry about and that the Sony version of the off-road arcade racer was up to standard as early as January this year.

"It's the same; exactly the same," Jason Avent assured us. "I'd say around January time we had all the functionality in the PS3 version that we had in the 360.

"Now we've got them both running and 30 frames per second is our target. It does dip down, but we've got months to optimise it. We do side-by-side comparisons just like you guys do."

His confidence comes from having access to a PS3 SDK a long time ago, thanks to a relationship formed making ATV vs. Offroad Fury 3 and 4 for Sony - back when Black Rock was called Climax and not owned by Disney.

However, development was lead on 360 because Black Rock had a "mature engine" from MotoGP '06 and '07, but once the bare bones of the game were in place, then 60 to 70 percent of the team got the PS3 version up to speed.

Avent went on to explain that the "PC [version] jumps out of the back of development" - which sounds like a good thing - and that to do a Wii version justice he would have to expand more than he was "currently comfortable doing" or "rob" the other teams of their focus.

Pure is due out this autumn on PC, PS3 and 360. It's described as an "off-road trick racing game" based around fun rather than simulation, and is shaping up to be much more than a bump in the road for heavyweights like MotorStorm Pacific Rift.

Head over to our Pure preview to find out more.

system war is just competition for technology. without the war, things would become stale and there would be no need to push boundaries or go that extra mile. the fact that there is rivalry means they will always try and out do the others, which ultimately means the gamers will benefit.

the fanboy war however is a different kettle of fish, as it ultimately serves no purpose.

Once Eurogamer has put both through their clockwork uber-frame-a-tron, the PS3 version will be shown to have cancer.

    aids ridden cancer?

The thing is, these quotes from devs do peeve me a bit, I mean, they're two very different hardwares so it's pretty much impossible to make a piece of software look *exactly* the same on them. Hopefully the game will be as good on both but I doubt it'll be "the same".
  • mazzl #5 4 years ago

if you see how many people they shifted from one platform to the other it's a shame we have two platforms.
games would be much quicker out the door with only 360 or ps3 to work on.
    i do hope the ps3 get's pulled quickly ;p

Exactly the same or not - gametrailers.com will still manage to do another video comparison :)

True - but depends who you are. A normal non-hardcore consumer will probably see the two version as "identical" even if there's a few tearing- and framerate issues in one version :)

I really don't understand either whats behind this fanboy war. Why defend one system against some other? Is it because you can afford only one? Is it because your friends have some machine and you need to buy same to "belong"?

I own Xbox 360, PS3, PS2, Wii, PSP, DS & PC. That's a lot of machines to select from. I even own couple games for different systems (Tiger 07 - X360, PS2, Wii, PSP) because they are very different from system to system.

Xbox 360 and PS3 games are really very similar, the differences there are very small.

Based on history I should be Sony fanboy. I have owned PS1, PS2 and I bought PS3 from launch as compared to X360 that I bought half a year after its release.

But no, I'm not a fanboy. I prefer each system at their own time, some machines more often, some others less often.

I'm getting carried away... It's this early morning... Need more coffee...

If Jedi were here he'd call you an Xbot, regardless.

    True story.

    lol :)

He would have probably screamed it on my face when I was queueing my PS3. :)

There's no reason why you couldn't make a game visually identical on the two formats. You can make the same 3D code work on different architectures, you use the same assets, the same music. If you output at the same resolution and balance the colours, I bet you'd be hard pushed to tell one from another. At the end of the day, they both output coloured pixels - not magic image pixies.

Programmers do it all the time with apps on Mac and PC, which have different OSes and different architectures and use different graphics cards.
  • DFawkes #12 4 years ago

Wow, that's surprising news. As in completely not surprising. I've played a lot of multiformat games on both, and I've never come across a single game that differs between systems.
  • Marshall2008 #13 4 years ago

Who cares, just ship decent games. That's just what we all want.
  • Putty-Man #14 4 years ago

Still looking for that reason to get my PS3 but it seems developers can site 'being the same on PS3 as 360' as an advantage of their game.
  • chrisjm #15 4 years ago

fish should be kept in tanks not kettles, not even the see through kettles.
  • monkie_king #16 4 years ago

two fish in a tank. one fish says, "so, do you know how to drive this thing?"
  • IneptPercy #17 4 years ago

So does this mean that the 360 version will be crippled so the PS3 can keep up...

...Fans the flames of the fanboy war and runs away...

"you are. A normal non-hardcore consumer will probably see the two version as "identical"

I totally agree man but then why don't the devs just say both versions will be on par/as good as each other, why this obsession with *exactly the same!* it's just a small bugbear of mine I guess :)

    @Weezer

"There's no reason why you couldn't make a game visually identical on the two formats."

It depends on what type of game, yes you could make Tetris look identical on both systems but if we're talking about a game that pushes the hardware in anyway it's not so simple because both systems have different strengths, hence devs have to get around problems in different ways, leading to *slightly* different results. I think, anyway ;-)
  • brooza #19 4 years ago

    Never even heard of this
  • neil_likes_bums #20 4 years ago

it will be equally shit on both systems
  • cyber_nicco #21 4 years ago

You know, some people would argue that saying the two will be exactly the same is meant to quell the fanboy stuff, not to stoke it.

    Right?
