I had never played, or possibly heard of, Punch Out til it got released on the VC. It's utter brilliant. Like an old school Shadow of the Colossus in many ways.

An unusual analogy, but a good one.

Super Punch Out was a classic and looking forward to the new addition.

Wonder if it will feature multiplayer?

Punch out is fun. But it's all about memorising boss attacks basically. You never really feel like a great boxer.

Super Punch Out > Punch Out (because I can beat the last guy in Super Punch Out :$)

Seriously, Super Punch Out is well worth 800 points any day of the week.

Super Punch Out is a great game, wrapped up in a boxing skin. I love it and am keeping a very close eye on how the Wii update pans out. For me I think it'll be the best indication yet of how Nintendo are going to update their franchises - will they be updated with Nintendo's traditional gamers in mind or will they pander to the new customer they seem to favour these days.

All commenters on this thread have nailed it. The punch out games are bonafide classics, were more a series of intricate timing puzzles than boxing matches, drowning in character almost never seen in today's games; Mike Tyson is one of gaming's few unbeatable* bosses, and the new Punch Out makes me nervous to the pit of my stomach because it is a big litmus test concerning whether Nintendo give two hoots for making games over toys** or just want to resell you individual bits of Wii Sports (see also: Mario Power Tennis redux).

* Technically, of course, he could be beaten. But technically the laws of physics dictate that you can phase your hand through a wall if you bang it against it enough times.
** This is ugly, sensationalist invective. It comes from a gamer who has almost lost all patience with Nintendo. And I don't appreciate being told to rely on third parties for games worth playing, given their collective track record with Nintendo's last two consoles.

i still have super punch out on my dusty old snes and was on of the great games of the 90's. any who says that its just about remebering the the moves of the fighters is missing the great part about this game,, the counter punches!!!! when you get to a good level you can counter nearly any punch before it hits you and combo of it, do that enough and then you will stun the fighter and get to cause even more damage. its all about the speed records. i beat the hurricane in 12 seconds he couldnt even get up after the first knock down put a smile on my face everytime i think about it :)

i dont own a wii (cause its crap) but i will be dusting off my snes tonight for sure!

Bunkum and balderdash to this Mike Tyson being unbeatable nonsense. When I were a kid i could beat him (albeit in his Mr Dream incarnation) without getting a hit. i fired up Punch out for the first time in years a few months ago and found I could still beat him.

SO THERE

I can still remember the password to get to the Dream fight as well:

Fuck man, I must've played that game way too much as a kid that that's burned into my memory.

Nintendo probably release more games each year than any other publisher? Or if not, more higher quality games anyhow? When a game takes 2 years to make, how on earth do you think they should be able to manage to make 1 high quality game a month or something equally dumb? Besides - if nintendo do release games regularly - 3rd parties complain that they cant match the quality of nintendo, so dont bother trying.

Microsoft and sony both heavily rely on 3rd parties - when was the last microsoft made game?? So why not nintendo? Seems to me that gamers just moan for the sake of moaning.

As for Punch out.. i have hopes for it.. but not high ones.. I cant see it being much better than wii sports boxing with nicer graphics.. but we'll see.

>its Wii remake of its NES and SNES arcade boxing game.

Why do they keep saying "remake" and not "sequel"?

No-one said halo 3 was a remake (despite it pretty much being).. or fable 2 for that matter (which even had pretty much the same plot - replace the fort with the futuristic prison)

EDIT: Would make myself less retarded if i'd spelt sequel right..

Ah, this board is nice after Chinatown Wars. I played Punch Out quite a lot, anyone think downloading Super will be worth it? Is it an improvement or just better graphics?

Unless Eurogamer know something that we don't, this is not a wii-make of Super Punch-Out!!, but for the orginal Punch-Out!! Although I loved the original and remember the Dream Code et al, the new game had me slightly dissappointed on announcement, as I would have preferred to see a sequel to the Super Punch-Out!! version (which i'm sure most here would agree) - it was just more diverse than the original, I actually hold world records for that game although I need to register them on Twin Galaxies. The other day, I knocked out Gabby Jay in 00:06.61 (not using an emulator, but the PAL Snes version) - the percieved maxed-out record is 00:06.64.
