PSP still on top in Japan

DS and Wii playing catchup.

The PSP is still the number one selling hardware platform in Japan, according to Media Create data.

More than 85,000 of Sony's handhelds were sold last week, along with 221,000 copies of hit PSP exclusive Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G.

The DS is in second place with just over 47,000 sold, followed by the Wii at 46,000. The PS3 is outselling the PS2, though not by a huge margin, while the figure for Xbox 360 is a bit of a shame.

  1. PlayStation Portable - 85,721
  2. Nintendo DS - 47,158
  3. Nintendo Wii - 46,296
  4. PlayStation 3 - 8232
  5. PlayStation 2 - 6834
  6. Xbox 360 - 1147

I think it's this Monster Hunter game they're going so crazy about, which I find strange, given my total lack of awareness of said series. It's even outsold Smash Bros in Japan, as far as I'm aware...

Sony must be apoplectic about Capcom switching Monster Hunter 3 from a PS3 to a Wii exclusive, though, because I'm guessing that plus Dragon Quest IX are going to be enough to tip things back in Nintendo's favour...

Yeah, Nintendo are screwed, there have been about half as many PSPs sold than DSs overall, how will they ever recover from this 100% lead.

Monster Hunter is the reason for the current sales. Of course Crisis Core had a similar effect, so I'm sure all the execs are breathing down the dev's necks to get it out the door as soon as possible. In Japan, of course.

Monster Hunter is a bit poo though - or has this new version made it a decent game now. All my opionion of course but I didn't enjoy the PS2 version and not very keen on the first PSP version either. I guess the Japanese go mad for it. Good on them them PSP deserves some time in the limelight.

I love my PSP, then again, I've been using it to plough through old FF games.
Now Crisis Core and GOW:COO are out, its a bit more of an incentive to get stuck in. Those, along with MGS and Syphon Mirror are stunning examples of what a handheld can do when given a nice shunt.

Too many tactics games though, would be nice to see a proper straight up RPG.

It's monster hunter that is at the back of all these sales. For some reason the Japanese love it. Given it's coming to the Wii soon, I don't think Nintendo really have anything to worry about in the long run.

    8k for ps3? oO

    I'm a ps3 fan, but man that's low :/

Don't Capcom want to keep repeating their success on PSP by putting Mhunter 3 on the Sony handheld at some stage?

Of course they do...only a matter of time.

    *Cough*

A two week break after nearly five years of market domination for the DS, and the 40,000 unit drop on PSP sales since last week is a pretty good indicator that the status quo will resume pretty damn soon.

Hmm maybe cos they already all own at least 1 DS.. they thought they'd give someone else a try before they buy the next redesigned DS?
  • Goffee #13 4 years ago

Following up on Slamhound's point there are now NO big games on the PSP radar. Aside from the Final Fantasy fighting game, the list is as dead as some doo-doos in Japan. If the software side doesn't pick up it could be a grim rest of year, unless Capcom release Monster Hunter 2H, 2I, 2J and 2K8 in short order.

I like the way that for any given console, there's at least one person claiming that 90% of its' games are shovelware.

The problem is that the same thing is true for all the consoles. It's true for movies. It's true for music. It's true for consumer electronics, it's true for bloody furniture[/b].

90% of everything is crap, people. Stop using it as an insult to the individual crap-delivery medium.

Haha...between the monstrous PSP sales and pathetic PS3 sales you wouldnt know if those are tears of joy or grief in Sony,s eyes.

The PS3 needs a re-design and a pack-in with FFXIII if it wishes to remain relevant in japan, it will never catch the Wii but it should at least average at 30k...... 8k is just hilarious.

I,m not going to talk about the 360 since its embarrassing to even mention the presence of the system there.

Nothing on quite the same scale as Crisis Core, no, but the Star Ocean remakes, Secret Agent Clank, Hot Shots Golf Portable 2 and Echochrome are more than enough for me, thankyouverymuch :)
  • Widge #17 4 years ago

Star Ocean is right on my radar for sure!
