PSP minis coming to PS3 next week

New firmware also adds PS3 data transfer.

Sony has announced that an optional firmware update for PlayStation 3 will be released next week.

Version 3.15 is set to introduce a data transfer feature for people who've bought a new console, along with the chance to play PSP minis on PS3.

The latter has been rumoured for a while, and will be a reality from 17th December, with Sony aiming to get "the majority of the current minis" ready in time. From then on, PSP minis will work on PS3 and PSP.

The data transfer feature, meanwhile, is designed to allow PS3 upgraders to copy things like save data across easily rather than mucking about with backups. It can't be used to salvage copy-protected saves though, sadly.

Full instructions and slightly more info can be found on the European PlayStation Blog.

Eh "optional" for now? But won't you have to have those features if you end up updating to anything after 3.15? No real point to this comment - just like to be pedantic.

its not really pointless, it means you won't get locked out of the psn if you don't want to bother with this update, unlike 3.16 or whatever the next mandatory update is

This means I can play Brainpipe with a sixaxis! That is very good news indeed.

These new feature don't really interest me as I haven't looked at the PSP Minis section of the Store yet, but when release day comes I'll still update and then have a look at the minis, might find a pleasant surprise or two, I have already read several times that Pinball Dreams and Fantasies are available there, very probably my favourite pinball games ever so I'll be sure to give it a look next week.

Of course - is this a bad thing?

The only reason I can see for something to be optional is if you're afraid that it might brick your PS3. By the time the next firmware update comes out that requires you to have 3.15 the previous firmware update problems should be resolved.

Even if you don't use them, does it hurt to have the extra features?

PSP minis will look crap on a big telly though?

Optional means you don't have to wait for the update to download before you can go online. Means you can wait and download it when it's convenient for you.

hopefully you will get full screen while playing them on the ps3 unlike the horrible ps1 classics you choose full screen and it don't fill the screen

I think the big news here is that Sony must have some sort of functional PSP emulator for the PS3. The possibilities for full emulation are intriguing.
