PSP firmware updated to 6.00 News

PSP News by Tom Bramwell

10 September, 2009

Sony has announced that the PlayStation Portable firmware will be updated to version 6.0 "soon", cautioning that it's just a minor update.

And they're not kidding - the headline feature is that you get a few new colours in the Theme Settings menu.

Beyond that, there's a new "security patch" and "Network Update" has been renamed "System Update".

It's a far cry from the sparklers, zebras and other animals that characterised the recent PS3 3.0 update, but then bigger changes are afoot in the new PSPgo and Minis initiatives, launching 1st October.

According to joystiq article new firmware hints at rental game support as games can now be grouped by 'expire date':

Yep, that sounds like a adding-background-architecture update, rather than one adding new features.

These updates are now more about cfw thwarting than anything functional.

That's what you think, Mr_Dodger. Instead, this update is probably all about a completely new DRM system that is open to third party publishers, rentals and so on. Stuff also that probably improves PSP-PS3 compatibility, and supports features for the PSP Go. Who knows even stuff like Trophy support on PSP - you just can't tell with those kinds of features until a game uses them. :)

Seems like a rather minor update for a major version number change.

You can't pick the new colours if you have a PSP 1000? That's a bit odd.

Why is it that "sorting" under Games only allows us to sort by expiry date? Why not a simple "sort alphabetically"?

The overall look of folders under Music and Videos was slightly changed as well. The term "XMB" is now adopted when we try to multitask.

Interesting that the "System Update" resembles more the PS3 one, but the "System Software" icons under game still are not hidden!

The Store seems to load a bit faster in general, so that's a good thing!

I might be imagining things, but I think this firmware adds a custom screen size option when playing PSone games which allows you to manually squeeze and stretch the game display (use the nub to stretch n squeeze) to match the dimensions of the PSP. So no more issues with cropped games coz you can do the cropping yourself!
