PSP-3000 gets UK date, price

Brighter screen for 150 quid.

Sony has told Eurogamer that the PSP-3000 will launch here on 17th October and cost GBP 149.99.

That makes the slightly redesigned model around 10 pounds more expensive than the existing Slim & Lite hardware being replaced.

However, those super keen for the brighter screen and built-in microphone will be able to buy a silver PSP-3000 bundled with Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters two days earlier for around EUR 199.

This will be followed in "early November" by a 4GB memory entertainment pack bundled with a black PSP-3000 for the same price.

Manufacture of the Slim & Lite PSP will come to a halt sometime this month; Sony Europe boss David Reeves also previously told us there may be time-limited price cut to help clear this model from shop shelves.

Wow, of course this is not the actual price most people will pay but I got my Slim & lite from £130 plus Tekken game.

Not sure it warrants the £150 price tag

I was looking forward to this as I still have a fat and heavy version. Sony being their usual selves however, then decide to point out that the new screen eats battery like a diva grabs freebies! Sounds like people should be grabbing the slim and lite while they can instead.

I'm slightly confused. The PSP-3000 will be available on 17th October for £149.99 but we will also be able to buy a White version 2 days earlier for 199Euro. Am I correct? I assume that this White version won't be available in the UK, hence why a euro price has been quoted.

Well, I might get this. While I did have an awfull experience with the phat-one (dead pixels and Sony refused to give me proper one), I read those problems are gone, and I don't realy like to play outside (sharp rocks).

and btw, I guess it's just me, but I think the white one loses a bit of the "punch" the black one has, because the contrast with a white background is not quite the same.

This is probably at least £50 more expensive than it needs to be to even begin to threaten the DS's market chokehold.
  • Pirotic #6 3 years ago

The screen wasn't really that much of a problem, the battery always caused me more issues. And the new screen cuts 30 minutes out of the battery life :p if they had a nice bigger battery in there I'd of been happy.
  • Widge #7 3 years ago

How much are these extended life 8 hour batteries that was spoken about in the other news item?

To be fair, I already use the M33 4th level brightness on my phat one, and that was dubbed "the battery eater" and I never have a problem. I don't think I ever have a 3 1/2 period in life where I won't have access to some form of charger... the only thing I could think of would be a massive flight somewhere...
  • penhalion #8 3 years ago

    @Widge

I thought that too until I waited at Heathrow for 5 hours! Watched one movie, tried to play a game and voila dead battery....

Edit: Actually that brings me to a problem I've always had with the PSP. I can't always tell if I've actually switched it off or just left it in standby! What is it hold button for 5? 10? whatever seconds to actually power it down.

I just looked up the high capacity battery on the PSP to see how much it costs. One of the websites make the hard sell easy with the following:

"Avoid the sadness and violence that battery failure can bring and double the lifespan of your PSP!"

I bought mine recently (Slim model) on a trip to the US.
Bundle with Daxter + Family Guy UMDs.

Only reason I bought one was the cheap ass price due to the dollar EUR conversion.
Otherwise I wouldn't have since I'm happy with my DS.

No intention to get the "improved" version.
  • johnnybrn #14 3 years ago

The slim and lite is definately better than the fatty with better battery life and greater ease of use IMO. Also for watching films its better if you load them onto the memory stick than use the UMD, this will save loads of battery usage, obvious I know

I'm just not sold on this one I would say get the Slim if you can get them cheap
  • dr_faulk #15 3 years ago

Who watches UMDs!? DVD -> .mp4 using Handbrake. It's the better option.
  • Widge #16 3 years ago

I watch UMDs, I can't be arsed converting movies, and I like having a physical package. Plus you can pick them up cheaply.
Also I'm using the memory card for music at the moment.

More like £20 more expensive. The existing is £129.99. A new iteration with a price increase. Very odd and no buy for me until it's the same price or less than the previous model.

    when's it out in japan?

i've had two 2000s die on me, this will be my 4th PSP. ridiculous.
  • RedboX #19 3 years ago

I was going to buy a PSP, but now I've decided that I'm going to get a PSP slim when Im in the us, for $170, thats £95.

Thats the price point we need.
  • samaran #20 3 years ago

honestly the screen is the biggest thing wrong with the current PSP, and as such the 3000 represents a much bigger improvement than anything the slim had to offer. if you don't think it's worth going for then you've clearly not spent enough time with a PSP, the screen is nowhere near bright enough and the ghosting pretty much makes me sick. the DS lite's screen puts it to shame - even the game boy micro has a nicer one!
  • miiiguel #21 3 years ago

"I watch UMDs, I can't be arsed converting movies"
Me too. I used to watch them in bed, but had to quit that, as I was starting to get bored of the all gigling , and the ocasional whispering of "geek!" coming from missus.

    @samaran

The GBA Micro screen is simply fantastic! It always amazes me how good it looks.
  • Zaltan #23 3 years ago

Yeah there isn't really any point going from Slim & Light to 3000. I don't have any friends to talk to and I never go outside so the new features are sort of pointless for me...
  • Gaol #24 3 years ago

Is the brightness setting locked at the highest level? I would assume the shorter battery life only applies to the new higher settings...
  • Sneerk #25 3 years ago

  • bad09 #26 3 years ago

OK more expensive, shorter battery life and an added mic hardly anyone will use, hmmm I think not......
  • Toothball #27 3 years ago

Hmm, I do like portable hardware iterations. Especially when I don't need them. That's about when my birthday is, so I'll probably call it a present to myself.
  • HiddenAway #28 3 years ago

Ironically, I set my PSP to the lowest brightness setting at all times. I always get some extra battery life out of that. The only time I would change to a brighter setting would be if the sunshine did start glaring the PSP.

I play the PSP every day and don't notice any ghosting. Using the phat too :p
  • samaran #29 3 years ago

man, i wish i had your eyes.
  • djcool3005 #30 3 years ago

I'm still using the original PSP-1000 that came with FW 1.00 that I got from Japan before it came out here and have no intention of buying a newer one either.
