PSN update: Killzone 2 demo tops bill News

PlayStation 3 News by Ellie Gibson

5 February, 2009

A bundle of new stuff has appeared in the PlayStation Store, including a playable Killzone 2 demo.

It's likely to be in high demand, but we're downloading it right now and there don't appear to be any issues. Unless you live in Germany, of course, where the demo will not be released. Sorry, Germans.

Also out now is the Burnout Paradise Ultimate Bundle, priced at GBP 29.99 / EUR 34.99. For that you get the full (and excellent) game, all the free updates and the Party Pack. This is a new add-on which introduces a pass-the-pad mode for up to eight players, new challenges, and enhancements for the modes, visuals and vehicle dynamics. The Party Pack is available separately for GBP 7.99 / EUR 9.99.

New PSN games out this week include Lumines Supernova, coming in at GBP 8.99 / EUR 10.99. Alternatively there's puzzler Cuboid (GBP 7.99 / EUR 9.99) - you can probably guess the central theme, but there's always the video if you're thick. Meanwhile, EA is offering 3 on 3 NHL Arcade for GBP 6.39 / EUR 7.99. It's probably about some kind of American sport.

As for downloadable add-ons - LittleBigPlanet fans can get the Valentine's Day level kit, topically, for GBP 2.39 / EUR 2.99. Then there's a new Everybody's Golf World Tour course, Golfasauraus Rex B.C.C., priced at GBP 3.19 / EUR 3.99. Or how about Naruto: Ultimate Nina Storm Pack 6, which is free. Here's hoping it marks a return to the heady heights of 1, 2 and 3 following a distinctly lacklustre 4 and the tangential misfire that was 5.

This week's new Guitar Hero World Tour tracks are Black Betty by Ram Jam, Commotion by Creedence Clearwater Revival and Gimme All Your Lovin' from ZZ Top. Each one costs GBP 1.59 / EUR 1.99.

For Rock Band there's Break My Heart and Don't Tell Me at GBP 0.59 / EUR 0.79. In the GBP 0.99 / EUR 1.49 category we have Cowboy Song (Live), Hit Me with your Best Shot, Jailbreak, Precious and - YES - The Boys Are Back in Town (Live). There's also the first Thin Lizzy Pack, priced at GBP 2.49 / EUR 3.99.

A PSN update just wouldn't be a PSN update with out some free wallpapers, and this week they feature Lord of the Rings and Mirror's Edge themes. This trailers are for Pain and Cuboid.

So what about the PSP? Well, Ghost Recon Advanced Warfare 2 is now available to download for the handheld, priced at GBP 15.99 / EUR 19.99. Perhaps you'd prefer mini-game compilation Bliss Island, which comes in at GBP 7.99 / EUR 9.99. Perhaps not.

That's it for now - tune in next week for more words about the new things on the PlayStation Store and how much they cost.

Can't wait to hit the Killzone 2 demo later! I'm usually pretty impressed with the updates apart from the shocking lack of PS1 games even though there were about 6,000,000 of them released across its life!

The KZ2 demo is a tad bit short. They could have at least let it run till the valve part, showing the Sixaxis in motion. But, hey, it is free...

I think it's up to developers to re-release their PS1 games, not Sony.
Sony have just made it possible to do, that's all.

A tad short you say. You're not wrong. Still at least it shows enough to ensure that people will get a good opinion of the game. Off to play the full thing next week as my friend does his usual review stuff :)

I just wish they show the motion-control-turning-valve part. I envy you so much, much as like when I watched a reviewer playing the whole damn thing...*sigh* Waiting is boring!

On a slightly separate note... I started using my ps3 again last night..hadn't used it in a few months and when i went to download trailers and also resi 5 it said I didnt have enough space. I've barely used the ps3 ...the only things i've downloaded are a few game trailers and a few demos. How can it be full?? Its the 40gb version. Could it be my saved game data? Either way 40gb shouldn't fill up that quickly with just a few things.

Can anyone help me out here...sorry for posting off topic.

fun demo, died a few times, but very enjoyable. Maybe could have used better signposting

for the bridge section i had trouble finding the rocket launcher, then i tried to fire actually at the bridge rather than the gun turrets.

same deal later on, couldn't find the lift, but overall its incredibly satisfying, and polished (well, a few quick loading pauses)

shuffles: 40 gb is not going to be ever enough, I would simply recommend look into Game Data and delete installed files that you know you going to hardly play, at least in the next couple of months!

Get a new HDD, my mate yesterday got 250 gb hdd for only £51. Almost a price of a single game and that would make a world of difference.

Expensive update. Lumines @ £9, Cuboid @ £8, these games are too expensive, there is a recession on you know! Why is it £7.99 in sterling and 9.99 euros when we have almost parity with the euro? Can I pay in euros instead as it will then only be £5 ish.

Too bad SSARPBC wasn't released this week, to those that wil say 'it was released last week' not true they released a demo which they charged £7.99 for and then you had to pay a additional £7.99 to get the full game (but that feature didn't work).
Sony were told and pulled the game off the store and it hasn't been put back on.

shuffles, bite the bullet, spend the £30-£40 for a bigger HDD. It may hurt but you won't regret it.

"Get a new HDD, my mate yesterday got 250 gb hdd for only £51."

My 320gb cost £35 (well plus postage but I can't remember what that was - not much).

Cool cheers. I was asking cuz my 360 only has a 20gb hard drive and i've way more demos and videos downloaded onto it and it still has space. Thats why I thought something was wrong. Ill check wat happens when I delete game data but ill prob get a hard drive. Is it any old hard drive and then you jst plug it into the ps3 the same way you would plug one into a comp?

They have to be 2.5" SATA HDD's (9mm thickness, not 12.5mm).

Check out Overclockers.co.uk or Play.com. They have Seagate, Samsung M6 and Western Digital (I don't rate WD highly) 500GB HDD's.

The HDD is internal. There are instructions in the manual on how to change it, or you can watch videos on YouTube (or check the forum).

You can use an external HDD (formatted to FAT32, 2TB max at the moment) but you can't use it for installing game data, demos or game saves. It's for photos/videos/music only.

My advice is to get a 500GB. Get the biggest available so you don't have to worry too much about upgrading 6-12 months down the line (especially if you plan on putting a lot of media on the HDD instead of streaming it).

Great KZ2 demo, but I had really hoped for just a bit more than ten minutes (and I wasn't exactly sprinting through it). Oh, well - I guess a very short teaser is better than nothing. Then again, maybe not :).

Got the demo and bought Lumines as well (sucker for that game, bought it on PSP, 360, and now on PS3). Damn those trophies are hard, and I'm sort of hardcore on this game already - have to really get used to playing on the Sixaxis, which I thought would be easier, but I have to make sure I take an older, broken in one or my hands hurt!

Killzone 2 demo is short, yeah, though it does give a nice bit of variation in that short bit. I do think that the shooting sometimes has a bit of a laggish feel, but generally I like it a fair bit. Not sure right now if I like it more than Resistance though, but it did leave me wanting to play more.

Set the sensitivities to 3/4, controls to alternative 2 and hold zoom and you have a slower CoD 4 setup. It's too short, yes, but if you quit before you go through the final door you can restart fairly quickly - well worth replaying to get used to the feel. I even switched the HUD and crosshairs off, which I highly recommend.

@HandOfBeedle - yeah I went for the COD setup as well (as I did for Resistance 2). It feels good - I like the cover system, holding down your aim whilst in cover is pretty handy.

I liked the demo alot, although it was tantilisingly short - still a release day purchase for me...!

Like the KZ2 demo... plays like 'Black' in a sci-fi setting. The AI is pretty good - on a par with FEAR - though it's a little undermined by having bad guys with glowing eye thingies that you can spot a mile away. At least it helps you tell them apart from your own grey buddies at a distance.
Still, seems like a decent enough futuristic FPS and the multiplayer should rock.

Loved the KZ2 demo. The rugged solidity compared to R2's speedy smoothness made for a nice change of pace. Not saying I prefer/ dislike either one (because I was straight back into R2 co-op afterwards) but Guerilla have given their game a really cool feel, and it suits the dark gritty realism extremely well. First day purchase, for sho.

Very immersive demo, nice GFX. I also went for the CoD control scheme although I still found it hard to aim... it was as if the momentum/acceleration in the look was a bit un balanced... can't quite figure out why but it's something like that.

BTW: I also fetched the Resident Evil 5 demo... very disappointing... horrible horrible controls and I wasn't that impressed with the animations. :-(

ahh well.

Unfortunately the value of the pound has slumped somewhat. Right now. 8 GBP = 9.22 EUR or $11.75.

So UK peeps are getting a slightly better deal than Euro-zone people.

I'm quite impressed with the Killzone 2 demo... enough to keep my pre-order in anyway. It's easily the best thing to come along to the PS3 in a long time, alongside LBP of course. If the PS3 is your only gaming plaform then it's not going to disappoint. Graphically I thought it was good, but it didn't knock my socks off. It's got a nice gritty realism to the atmosphere, but the textures are a bit flat and washed out looking, almost like it's been upscaled from 600 to 720p. It's certainly got that PS3 look. Maybe I'm spoiled with the crisp visuals and vibrant graphics that GOW2 has, I dunno. In terms of gameplay, if I can get used to the controls (I'm constantly expecting the left trigger to aim), I think I prefer it to gears - mostly because I like tactical shooters. Speaking of which, highly disappointing that the demo never offered veteran level (as most reviews say that's the preferred way to play). All in all, top stuff, but not earth shattering, better than anything on the 360, Next Gen Begins Here, stuff. It looks like it'll be a great game though and it'll fight for time with Race Pro this month, that's for sure.

The Killzone 2 demo is an old build. I decided not to play it last night as Lumines Supernova was calling out to me. I was shocked when my TV stayed at 1080p, not sure if it's native or upscaled but it looks amazing. I'm also happy that it's more like Lumines II as that is much better than the first game.

I think Lumines Supernova needs is about 80 more skins (immediately) to keep things really interesting. I hope some free/cheap DLC is added regularly.

Yep, just you.

In fact I kept expecting it to slow down or drop frames because there was just so much shit going on at any one time. But it didn't chug for one second. And the thing is, the closer you look the more impressive it gets.

I don't expect everyone to get on with the grey colour pallete and gritty designs, but you have to admit from a technical standpoint it's easily one of the most impressive console games around at the moment.

Technically and graphically, KZ2 is definetely in a class of its own, well above the rest. However, this was more technical "wow" than a pure wow factor because of (for me) the art direction... It just felt like the bland uninspired level design didn’t do justice to the engine.

As for gameplay, well, it’s just another shooter: I got bored of those sometime in the last century, so count me out on that aspect. ^_^
