PSN store invaded

Buy new bits and pieces.

The PlayStation Store has been savagely attacked by new content.

Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection Online landed the first blow for GBP 14.99, and will let you finally flail your arms at your friends over the Internet. This was followed up by an elbow from downloadable PSone game Cool Boarders costing GBP 3.49.

The apparently very good Need For Speed ProStreet contributed with a hurting flurry of its own by offering a demo of its treats, followed by stamps from additional content packs for three existing titles.

First is the Online Component for Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection for GBP 3.49, in case you already have the old PSN version installed, followed by Folklore Bottom of the Sea extras for GBP 1.49 and MotorStorm Devil's Weekend goodies for GBP 3.49.

Rounding all that off was a spiteful jab by a video looking at the animation in Uncharted: Drake's Fortune.

Yesterday Sony also released PS3 firmware update version 2.0, which adds CrossMediaBar customisation options and remote play functionality so you can turn on your PS3 while you are playing PSP on the toilet.

I hardly call that a savage attack. It'd be nice if it was attacked by an Uncharted demo which worked on Pal consoles.

Tekken 5 Online for fifteen quid... isn't that more expensive than buying the game and the online addition seperately? Seems a bit cheeky.

Oh, and I say this far too often, but Sony needs to pull their finger out and raid the Psygnosis back-catalogue. And not just the PS1 stuff; they've got loads of Atari ST/Amiga 500 classics which would go down a treat for a few quid.
  • SeesThroughAll #3 4 years ago

@ Triggerhappytel: Yes, that's the idea. It's a discount to "reward" those who bought the game on launch day.

"Tekken 5 Online for fifteen quid... isn't that more expensive than buying the game and the online addition seperately? Seems a bit cheeky."

Yes, quite ridiculous really. DR on its own is (was? I don't if it's still up) £6.99, and the add-on is £3.49. How they can justify charging £15 for the whole thing is beyond me...
  • SeesThroughAll #5 4 years ago

They removed the original download, I think.

Note that the 7 quid tag was always referred to as "temporary promotion" in the store.

Look at it this way: Tekken 5 DR, with full online play, is it not worth 15 quid?
  • bdc #6 4 years ago

    OH TEH NOES 4 MORE QUID ;_;
  • mcwildcard #7 4 years ago

I'm with SeesThroughAll, Tekken online for £15 is worth every penny.
People are just getting pissy because they didn't have the foresight to buy the game in the first place.

The apparently very good Need For Speed ProStreet...

    Er... according to whom?

Remote Play is ace. Wake-on-lan remote play is even better. When the PVR widget finally comes out, this is going to make it an awesome service.

Not according to me after playing the demo.
  • sickpuppysoftware #11 4 years ago

EG gave a warning about the Tekken price change yesterday. That's why I bought it last night to take advantage of the offer.
  • oreillymj #12 4 years ago

The cars in ProStreet all feel a bit detached and "floaty" for my liking.

But if the options menu let you swtich off the annoying str33t commentary and epilepsy inducing shite from the UI, I'd probably trade in last years abysmal effort for it.
  • kangarootoo #13 4 years ago

One of the killers for me was the damge system. If I crash in an arcade racer I expect to lose ground whilst I get replaced back on the track. If I want the session to end I'll buy an F1 sim.

    What JMM said.

Sony + Online store regions not in synch = LOL

Remote play works from the toilet ... in your office! Or in your pub! Or at a friend's/relative's place. Wherever you happen to have your PSP with you and a WiFi connection to the interwebs.

Hopefully one day Eurogamer understands this, because in the last three articles that have mentioned the functionality, there's no evidence of this. But it has a huge impact on the value of the remote access feature obviously, if you don't have to keep your PS3 on and in remote play mode if you go away for a weekend or abroad and you think you might want to connect to it using your PSP at some point.

Tekken Online is Ace, tried it yesterday night with some guys from Spain (I'm in the Netherlands) and even though I use a modest connection and use WiFi to boot, I had pretty much no issues. And it's got all sorts of great lobby features, live watching of matches in your room, etc. Awesome.

"People are just getting pissy because they didn't have the foresight to buy the game in the first place."

Er... I bought the game in March. I bought the add-on yesterday. I'm just surprised that they're charging £15 for the whole thing, as the £6.99 version was available until very recently (still available yesterday in fact, so it's not for any kind of loyalty by buying early that some got it cheaper). I didn't say it wasn't worth the money or they're ripping anyone off.

It's called Remote Play, but so far I think I have one game (I can't remember the name of) that supports it.

And the only other game I know if is Lair.

So why do I need to switch on my PS3 from anywhere to gaze at the XMB?
It might be useful when the TV add-on is released or a few games, but it's a non-feature ATM.
  • mcwildcard #18 4 years ago

Aretak: Not many people noticed, but as has been mentioned previously in these comments, the £6.99 price was marked as 'promotional' for the whole time the 'unline' (see what I did there!) version was available.
  • SeesThroughAll #19 4 years ago

    @ Arwin:

Do you honestly expect eurogamer to actually acknowledge a PSP-PS3 feature to be remotely interesting?

    That's very naive of you.
  • JediMasterMalik #20 4 years ago

Remote play is pretty damn awesome, and even more so now that it can start your PS3.
  • kangarootoo #21 4 years ago

    @Arwin

I agree. I am sat here thinking "am I the only one seeing the potential of this". I can be sat anywhere in the world, and so long as I can find a hotspot I can use my PSP to connect to my OWN ps3 and listen to my OWN music or watch my OWN movies, from ANYWHERE.

I can also launch the store, buy stuff and install it so when I get home it is ready to play. And when the PVR kit turns up I'll be able to set my TV to record things, OR just watch UK freeview TV, from anywhere in the world (though I am dubious about the streaming of TV not having major issues.

Whats more (on the whole media streming front), the music or movies could be getting streamed from my home PC, to my PS3 and then punted out to my PSP across the web.

How is that not blowing everyone's socks off?

This is about as close as I've ever been to sounding like a fanboy, but I get enthusiastic about good ideas and this is a killer.

    @oreillymj

See my points above. Playing games with remote access is really only a tiny part of the deal.
  • moggsy #22 4 years ago

How is that not blowing everyone's socks off?

Maybe not many people own a PSP?

I like the idea of the feature - not used it much though yet.
  • ElasticTangent #23 4 years ago

If Sony added more functionallity for using the PSP in PS3 games (like a rear view mirror in racing games or maybe constantly showing the map in Warhawk) I'd be tempted to buy another PSP.

I sold my last PSP to someone that actually said they were going to use it.
  • drumbaby #24 4 years ago

Apart from the Folklore add on...meh.

Especially seeing as we don't get the UDF demo.

  • AbyssUK #26 4 years ago

    @kangarootoo

You can do all that without the use of a ps3, and its pretty easy
  • mjzero #27 4 years ago

    @kangarootoo

I have tried the [Remote Play] both at home and just now from work. And it works like a charm.
I see great use in Remote Play, just as you said, now I can look and listen to all my content on my PS3 and because I also have shared my media files on my home computer, I can stream those too to my PSP, over the Internet.

It still amazes me the possibilities there are in the PS3.
But then again, I’m a Sony fan so that may colour my vision of things :)

  • AbyssUK #28 4 years ago

    @kangarootoo

Just for fun via the wonderful medium of VNC I just played a little bit of Halo on my psp, over the internet.. it didn't work very well but hows that for blowing your mind!

Also homebrew does have uses other than piracy.
  • cawley1 #29 4 years ago

I thought NFS:proStreet was excellent, after getting my hopes up for Sega Rally and deciding it was nob!

I hate pretty much any EA game not on the Atari 800, so you can imagine my surprise...

Will still wait for it to hit the bargain bins though!
  • cawley1 #30 4 years ago

Why has Super Puzzle Fighter never made it to the UK PSN store?
    Anyone know???
  • Virvel #31 4 years ago

    Tekken online?? Fantastic!!!

  • Scimarad #32 4 years ago

Pro Street is a load of old arse on the PS3 AND the 360. It's a bigger load of old arse on the PS3, though.
  • db3 #33 4 years ago

ProStreet demo is complete pile of turd.
Not quite sure which demo is worse ProStreet or Juiced2

  • tonynibbles #34 4 years ago

The region lockin gon the UC demo was a mistake and Naughty Dog are apparently looking in to fixing this - they made a statement on the PS boards.
  • Rev.StuartCampbell #35 4 years ago

Perhaps people aren't excited because the feature is constantly billed - by Sony themselves - as "being able to switch on your PS3 remotely from your PSP", and nobody can work out why the fuck they'd want to switch their PS3 on when they weren't in the house?

Reading this thread, it sounds like you can stream content from your PC to the PS3, and from there to the PSP, meaning that (as long as you leave your PC switched on while you're out) you could watch videos or listen to music that's on your PC, using your PSP, while you were 100 miles away. Which actually would be pretty damn impressive, if it's correct. Just telling people they can switch their PS3 on with the PSP, however, is idiotic.

    THEY'VE FIXED THE UNCHARTED DEMO!
  • Penguinzoot #37 4 years ago

I agree with Kanga and et al WRT remote play. I find the possibilities of the technology exciting and with loads of potential.

TBH I'm not really bothered about playing games remotely, but streaming stuff from the PC via the PS3 and then over the internet is really great. I was demo'ing this to Mrs Penguin yesterday but for some reason she just couldn't see why I thought it was so great ;-). Oh well.
  • Arwin #38 4 years ago

Yeah, the Uncharted demo works now and it is just .... !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wow.

  • NinjaWilliams #39 4 years ago

Impressions of the demo: Very nice visually, but gameplay wise offers nothing new whatsoever, in fact its just been hyped up just as Stranglehold was. The control system is clunky and camerviews unintelligent.

Worth a rent or two or when its on a cheapie budget price.

4/10 "Visually pleasing but repetitive and tedius as hell"

    Roll on Assassins Creed! :)
  • Steroyd #40 4 years ago

    REPETITIVE WTF!?!

Anything but, I've found new ways to melee people, like a 2 footed face kick, a slide tackle their legs, snapping their necks sneaking from behind heck I almost completed a combo where I shoved a guy against the wall, and finding multiple routes to the same problem to was a nice touch.

    Repetitveness DOES NOT COMPUTE!
  • zedzee #41 4 years ago

Uncharted = Tomb Raider with trousers.
