PSN update: VidZone launches today

Also: Puzzle Quest! WipEout! Wolfenstein!

There be treasure on the PlayStation Store today, lead by the free online music video streaming service VidZone.

Futuristic Puzzle Quest sequel Galactrix finally shows up, as does Wolfenstein 3D. Both are out on Xbox Live Arcade but we've only reviewed Puzzle Quest: Galactrix so far. SEGA's Gunstar Heroes is up for grabs, as is a demo for the black-hearted Overlord II, which tramples peasants with whimsy.

The PSP is offered a quartet of previously UMD-only games - the best being WipEout Pulse - and there's a slew of content for existing PS3 games.

Our picks are the ICO and Shadow of the Colossus costumes for LBP, the chunky Iron Maiden pack for Rock Band and the Big Surf Island add-on for Burnout Paradise. The Killzone 2: Flash and Thunder map pack is also of note.

I managed to get on Vidzone earlier before it was killed by "high demand", I was very impressed by it. Fingers crossed when everyone has stopped testing it, the servers will be able to cope with the amount of people regularly using it.
  • collateral89 #7 3 years ago

i managed to play half a video on it then it stalled
  • makeamazing #8 3 years ago

    Yay Overlord Demo, great :D

  • Ranger_Ryu #9 3 years ago

At first vidzone wouldn't load for me, but for a couple of hours I managed to watch a load of videos, which all loaded instantly and were pretty good quality, and then it just stopped working again xD

VidZone is utterly useless. Every video ive tried is in 4:3 with black bars meaning it just fills a little 16:9 block in the center of the screen. Why could they not crop them to make them actually 16:9? Even VLC can do that, guys.
  • dominalien #12 3 years ago

Even VLC can do that, guys.

Hey, VLC is the best piece of software ever. Of course it can do that!
  • zarglu #13 3 years ago

VidZone is quite good for a start once you can connect in. Me likes.
I expect it'll get even better in the next weeks, and even better once they enable HD videos.
Great addition, and you can't beat the price!

Must check this out (from the sounds of it over the weekend when quieter!), I'm on music revival this year (hooked on Absolute radio) so a free video service may get a little use.

Crop them!?! I'd rather have black bars on the side than have 30% of the image lost. It would be a much better idea if they actually bothered to use the 16:9 versions instead. All music video's for the last 10 years have been shot in widescreen, they are no doubt readily available. For older videos I'd rather see the whole image personally, but hey, it shouldn't be too hard for them to add the option. ;)

Saying that though, I haven't downloaded it yet - is it only the old video's that are 4:3?

Im having difficulty getting into vidzone.

I'm not sure about that. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure it's pretty good, and I may even get some use out of it, but I'd rather pay for something that's amazing that I use/play all the time! XD

Don't know what kind of TV you've got but most decent HDTV's can fit it to screen, if you've got a HDTV change the screen from that, should be cool it's how I hide borders on the Live games that have them like Soul Calibur or Duke Nukem.

Wolfenstein...hmmm...I would LOVE a PSN DOOM!
  • Artemis_Matsas #21 3 years ago

    Sadly, Vidzone is region locked.
It is not available in the Greek store, and although i downloaded it from the UK store it wouldn't start because it is currently available on selected countries.
  • el_pollo_diablo #22 3 years ago

VidZone is, in the words of Sir Alan, a load of old toot.
  • kincaide #23 3 years ago

    AND THE SINGSTAR SONGS????????
  • Miths #24 3 years ago

The Overlord II demo was pretty entertaining, but the framerate was disturbingly sketchy at times. Was that the case with the original as well? I only played that on the 360 before I bought my PS3 - though it's been so long that I can't recall if there were framerate hiccups there too.
  • Kornicos #25 3 years ago

vidzone is pretty damm cool. nice playlist functionality. interesting to see how last.fm compares.
  • Greebo #26 3 years ago

Given that I'm only on a 2mbit line, I'm hugely impressed at how responsive Vidzone is! Think I'll be regularly using it!
  • thebuzzard #27 3 years ago

Vidzone has "come on my selector" what else does anyone need?
  • Greebo #28 3 years ago

    Ahh, Squarepusher. Good choice! :-)

  • greekgoddj #29 3 years ago

It is rather nice actually....playing right now actually :o)
  • Dave52 #30 3 years ago

I had a quick looksee at Vidzone last night, played some live Queen vids and some Unkle, pretty good for a freebe. I can see this being ace once I've sorted out some playlists...

Anyone know the size of these vids as they stream down (I don't wanna piss off my ISP too much)....?
  • Dillinger #31 3 years ago

not enough people talking about GUNSTAR HEROES! (wow, only just noticed that if you hit P instead of O, you get gunstar herpes..)

does anyone know what the 'new graphics' means? has it has a HD makeover, or is just the addition of some smooth filtering?
  • Jos #32 3 years ago

    VIDZONE is brilliant.

Spent three hours last night lost in it searching through artists and going through the pre built playlists.

My other half loved it loads as well.

The vids start faster and are better quality than I got through you tube. And there are more than enough to keep my interest.

My network connection was a little flaky and it seemed to cope really well keeping the video going while the PS3 re connected. Presumably lots of pre cache.

Took a we while to get used to the interface but now find it really easy. Seemed counter intuitive to build playlists the way it does but now it's a natural as anything. Just have to remember to go all the way back up the screen hierarchy to access some of the functions.

    Few issues;

PS/3 remote doesn't work on it at all which seems odd.
When it is doing a search you can't do anything else at all until the result set has come back.
When you drop into a search page it immediately starts to search for all the a's in that type of search - which can take a while in the videos category.

Now if they can get a film zone there as well I'll be sated.
