PSN down during Sony conference News

PlayStation 3 PSP News by Tom Bramwell

18 August, 2009

Sony has announced that the PlayStation Network will be "taken offline for maintenance" later today between 5pm and 7pm BST.

Presumably it's an entirely innocent period of quiet reflection that just happens to coinc--WAAAIT A MINUTE! That's when the Sony gamescom conference takes place!

Obviously there's no cause to attach particular significance to this fact yet, but with Sony set to talk up the PSP app store during the show it wouldn't be utterly surprising to see PSN pop back up with that in place.

And if you're looking for something to do during those two hours of downtime, why not read about what's going on at the Sony gamescom conference in our live text coverage? That link will be where you need to be to see it - with the conference set to begin at 5.30pm BST / 6.30pm CET.

If it's not firmware 3.0 I'm not interested.

A ps3 slim/BC doesn't affect me!

I reckon they'll take it down before the conference then announce that it's been replaced with a new subscription based service during the conference, so when it comes back on at 7 o'clock you'd best have your credit card ready!

Do Sony do a dev package for PSPgo like Apple for for iPhone?

Hopefully you don't have to pay a gazzillion dollars to register as a developer?

I don't think it will be the PSP Store as the PSPGo isn't being launched today, but it could be the EU Video Store that gets launched today.

@ StooMonster

Yes they do. At E3 Kaz announced that the PSP DevKit price would be dropped by 80%. I have no idea how much it is, or was though.

PS3 firmware updates are usually monthly, aren't they, so we must be due one soon? ;)

Googled, new prices are US$1500 for hardware and Official PSP SDK and tools (e.g. ProDG) ; plus $1000 for testing tools for QA. Wonder if the revenue share is similar terms to App Store for distribution through the PSN Store? Although I've heard that Sony's approval process is a PITA. :(
