PS3 starter pack rumours silence Sony News

PlayStation 3 News by Games Industry.biz

5 September, 2007

Pictures surfaced today of the box for a new PlayStation 3 starter pack for Europe, with a changed line-up of games, GamesIndustry.biz reports.

The picture suggests that the pack will replace the current included games (Motorstorm and Resistance: Fall of Man) with two other SCEE titles: new release Heavenly Sword, and launch title F1 Championship Edition. As before, it will also include a 60GB PS3 and two Sixaxis controllers.

Sony has so far declined to comment on the authenticity of the image.

The source of the image suggests it will retail later this month, at the same price as the current starter pack: EUR 599 (GBP 425).

The current starter pack was launched in the UK on 18th July and the rest of Europe on 1st August. There has confusion as to whether or not it is a limited offer, but if this image is genuine, it would suggest that Sony intends to continue the promotion.

GamesIndustry.biz has plenty more bundles; those stuffed full of facts from the far reaches of the videogame world.

Would turn me off. If I could find a Motostorm, Ridge Racer bundle somewhere I may have already ordered one.

To be perfectly frank, I would rather Sony drop the price of the system than throwing in two (first party) games and an extra controller when most customers would prefer choice.

If Sony want to do very well this Christmas then a SingStar party bundle with two microphones and the PS3 itself for £349 - don't underestimate the pulling power of SingStar!

Hmmm... that actually looks a worse offering than the 1st bundle deal!?!?!

Motorstorm and Resistance were solid titles. Heavenly Sword sounds above-average but, regardless of quality, an F1 title is just too niche! I can't bear F1 games... a Motorstorm, Heavenly Sword combo (in spite of the review malaise for the latter) would be more my thing. Those and Little Big Planet are the only PS3 exclusives I fancy getting my grubby mits on.

Go to play, I saw a similar offer.

However I'm not interested in Buying a PS3 for now, they should do a Killzone2 & MetalGearSolid4 pack, when both of them are out. That would sell millions.

If true, this (imho) is a poorer bundle than the existing one. The F1 game has next to no appeal for me... maybe a choice between that and Motorstorm or Resistance would be better?

Actually, what am I saying? £425 is still too expensive. Get it down to the price of the 360 Elite and they might finally shift a few.

So they bundle the PS3 with two worse games than Motorstorm and Resistance. Add two controllers even though both games are single player only.

Just lower the price Sony and stop this nonsense, it's beyond a joke.

They can throw together as many bundles as they want, but until the system is under 300 quid with 2 controllers and a game I will not buy a ps3.

Hmm, so take out 2 games that seem like the pick of the ps3 bunch for one new title with average reviews and one that is just rubbish? Strange move, methinks - I suspect this is someone messing around in photoshop...

I really don't think the choice of games is very good. For a start it immediately limits the potential audience because Heavenly Sword is a 16+.

Then any F1 fans out there, should realise that this Championship Edition refers to the 2006 season, not the 2007 season which has already started. So that's no Lewis Hamilton, oh and it got bad reviews and it was a launch title so it's not as graphically superior as the recent PS3 titles.

The last thing, is that it comes bundled with two controllers, well to my knowledge Heavenly Sword isn't a split-screen multiplayer game, and neither is Formula 1 as thats online multiplayer only. Somehow I don't they've thought this through...

More Sony silliness. Whilst I still firmly believe F1 was under-rated - the Sixaxis controls being a joy to use for a start - it's far too niche for a bundled title. Madness.

Singstar has already got reviews out, so if a bundle was made as quickly as with heavenly sword, then i'm sure an xmas singstar bundle could be possible.

Jesus Christ it's a step down from the Resistance + Motorstorm bundle IMO.

Heavenly swords a good one, but to pair it with F1 come on if the roster was updated to this season it would make more sense but it doesn't.

I really don't get this article, the value pack has alway been a choice of games.

All the pic could suggest is that they are adding Heavnly sword as one of the choices!!

Really don't get where they got the idea of "replace the current bundle of Motorstorm & RFOM" from!

you know at first i was rooting for the 360 because it was the underdog and also had the best games, but now i feel like i want to root for PS3 because it's failing so badly and i dont think it can survive another generation war with microsoft. it might soon become a one horse race, which puts us back to square 1 with the playstation.

I can't speak for everyone, but for me - it's not that I'm not interested in the PS3; I certainly want one but I just refuse to spend £400 on it. I'm waiting for Sony to drop the price to a level that represents realy value for money versus, say, the Xbox 360 Elite but so far they've resolutely refused to do so. "Value" packs containing minority-interest games like F1 are completely the wrong way to go to increase sales. If/when this is actually launched, I can't see it making any difference tbh.

Nintendo on the other hand had the good foresight to bundle Wii Sports - arguably the console's killer app - with their machine. Do you think if they'd stuck Wii Play in there instead, people would be buying it as much as they are?

I agree... to "niche" for most casual gamers. But F1 is still a great game IMO... just not very "next-gen" or representing what the PS3 is capable of by far.

Well I have played the demo, and I wasn't very impressed with the graphics. I have MotorStorm and have played the RR7 demo, and both of those launch titles imo looked better and showed off the graphical power of the PS3 better.

I own both a 360 and a ps3 and am finding that the lack of "exclusive" games on the ps3 really depressing! I bought my ps3 during this promotion with 2 games and 2 controllers for £379 (not a bargain but getting there ...)

I am looking forward to the play tv thing coming out (perhaps that could be a bundle too with no money off!), but at the moment I am more on my xbox 360 than my ps3....

I am sure this will change in a year or two as sony (and developers) get to grips with the ps3... Just feels like I got the ps3 a bit too early still (and this is a year after release!) and shoddy offers like these highlight the distinct lack of games there are (and how many exclusives they have lost)
