PS3 firmware v2.53 available News

PlayStation 3 News by Robert Purchese

2 December, 2008

Sony has popped out a firmware update for PS3.

Version 2.53 can be downloaded now - for real this time - and aims to improve the internet browser Flash player, according to the US PlayStation blog.

More sites will now be supported and full-screen play has been added, as has live movie (RTMP format) playback.

Flash 9 support was whispered into firmware update 2.5, but had a mixed reception from fans; some had problems, some didn't.

Incidentally, Eurogamer TV uses Flash Player 9, so you can now enjoy Johnny Minkley from the comfort of your sofa. So to speak.

Can we stream MP4s yet? Not sure when, but one of the firmware updates broke MP4 streaming, though AVIs are fine.

LOL, you guys are old ... so am I for getting that. But then I get the feeling that there's plenty of old fogies lurking on EG.

Ever thought to hold a poll on the age of the EG demographic ?

Now that your videos work on PS3, could i also request you make a psp compatible version of your website, as its unusuable on it.

The BBC managed it so pull your finger out EG.

A PSP format of your EGTV would be nice as well. :)

EGTV seems to have started to require Flash Player 10, so this joy didn't last too long..

What's up with the text escaping to the right?
Is it because of the link on Jonsend's post?

Yup the BBC iplayer now works. Well it's a beta so it's still a bit buggy.

/sarcasm mode on

Oooo goodie *another* mega 100 MB firmware update that improves *one* solitary feature... can't wait!

/sarcasm mode off

Seriously though... Sony need to make these frequent updates either incremental like Microsoft do for the 360 or make them less frequent but with more features/improvements/bug fixes as I'm a nervous wreck everytime I install these things in case I have a power cut during the actual flashing process or something. :?

Sony really do take it to ridiculous extremes with all these firmware updates (and it seems the same on the PSP too). Neither the Wii nor Xbox 360, the latter of which has been out far longer than the PS3 and has seen a complete overhaul of its GUI, have had anywhere near as many firmware updates. And with good reason, they carry with them a risk of something going wrong so Nintendo and Microsoft sensibly keep them to an absolute minimum.

Whoever decided a firmware update or two per month was a good idea for the PS3 is probably the same person who thought having an overcomplex architecture for the hardware to annoy developers with was also a terrific idea too. ;)

They are able to make some firmware updates optional, as I understand (there was the 2.43 or something that was optional, as it only addressed issues for Japan). Maybe they should use it more often.

May well be though that they tend to close up security holes with these 0.0x firmware updates more than anything else.
Still, Flash 9 support does really help. Hopefully Flash 10 doesn't spoil the fun too soon. Eurogamer, if you go Flash 10 only, I'll hate you.

These constant updates are annoying but at least it fixes certain issues that obviously a high number of users raise. Sony and MS have different approaches but with MS one big update and numerous issues which take weeks to sort out.

Maybe Sonys approach is annoying but in days if not a couple of weeks the issue is sorted.
