Japanese charts: PS3 on top

Xbox 360 tumbles out of sight.

The PS3 remains the top-selling Japanese console this week, and puts daylight between itself and nearest challenger, the Nintendo Wii.

Only DS and PSP count new entries of any note in the software chart, however. These are Mobile Suit Gundam and Disgaea 2 for PSP, and some Yugioh 5D game for DS.

Out of the top 50, nearly half (22) of the list is occupied by games for DS, according to Media Create data (reproduced on NeoGAF). The rest of spaces divide more evenly: 10 games for Wii, nine games for PSP, five games for PS3 and four games for PS2.

The Xbox 360 is absent, then, as platform sales tumble down to the 5000 mark.

How much did the PS1 do in its lifetime?
  • Vanmunt #2 3 years ago

PS2 life cycle is at an end, says Microsoft News
  • myiagros #3 3 years ago

i thought the X360 had been confirmed passed 1 million and the PS3 passed 3 million.

The numbers above suggest the 360 is 5 weeks or so from 1 million and the PS3 is 2 weeks away from 3 million.
  • NotSoSlim #4 3 years ago

Thought the PS3 life cycle ended??

    @ MattDamon

Japanese buy games dont they? Even if you dont car all the companies obviously do
  • Toothball #5 3 years ago

Ooh, I didn't know they were releasing Disgaea 2 on PSP.
  • chessboxer #6 3 years ago

    @ Widge

The PlayStation sold 102 million as of July 20th 2008. That includes the original PlayStation and the PSOne or whatever it was called.
  • Petulant_Radish #7 3 years ago

Foxhound, weren’t you once a PS3 Partisan, who did a 180 down the other side of the street for 360, then went back to the way of the Sony box? You’re like those supposedly straight men who go gay for a little while, queening it up and loving it, then get a bit embarrassed and go back to a living a straight life full of lies.

EG i take it theres nothing else good to talk about on the PS3 then? Right!?

I wonder wheather the Japs give a fuck about our charts?
  • patch #9 3 years ago

@mattdamon, I don't think it really matters if you don't give a f*ck about what happens in Japan. I'm sure some people find these figures VERY important.

You’re like those supposedly straight men who go gay for a little while, queening it up and loving it, then get a bit embarrassed and go back to a living a straight life full of lies.

That is the best thing I have ever read on this website.

"You’re like those supposedly straight men who go gay for a little while, queening it up and loving it, then get a bit embarrassed and go back to a living a straight life full of lies."

So being a 360 fan is like being gay. An interesting analogy but one I think few would agree with.
  • Doctor_What #12 3 years ago

We give a damn about Japan because they are one of the main games producing nations in the world, as well as containing two of the main console manufacturers, including the top selling one globally. Where their tastes sway gives some indication about how those manufacturers will be thinking about their market.

    Does that answer the question?
  • X #13 3 years ago

So we can take from this that the Japanese love handhelds more than using a TV to play games and the 360 is too western for them to care. Shame really.
  • Paulie_P #14 3 years ago

This article quite clearly shows why the Atari Jaguar is the best.
  • M_of_the_sys #15 3 years ago

"Is it cos I is western?"
  • Sunyavadin #16 3 years ago

Like I care. I've bought Six japanese games in the last 3 years. They had a good run in the early 90s, a brief renaissance in the late 90s, and since then there's been very little of note besides overly-milked big name franchises games-wise out of Japan.

Well, aside from handheld ones, that is. Which makes sense from this chart.

How is the PS3 on top? It says Nintendo DS in my browser.
  • Vistrix #18 3 years ago

@oerhört The DS is a handheld console...Not just a console.

It says the top selling console in Japan is the PS3.

    @ Kenshin001

"So being a 360 fan is like being gay. An interesting analogy but one I think few would agree with."

Actually, I read that as being a 360 fanboy was like being true to yourself, whereas being a PS3 fan was like living in perpetual denial, forever refusing to acknowledge what it was you really wanted.

Still, kudos to Mr Radish for making me chuckle.
  • miiiguel #20 3 years ago

  • drxym #21 3 years ago

Its good to see some PSP / PS3 sales for once, but I suspect that you could slap a Gundam title onto boxes of wood shavings and it would still sell.
  • Thunderbolt #22 3 years ago

The 360 decided to take a week off now that its reached its million
  • penhalion #23 3 years ago

  • Vistrix #24 3 years ago

Correct me if Im wrong, but hasnt the PS3 been ontop of the console sales chart in Japan for a while now?
  • Petulant_Radish #25 3 years ago

“So being a 360 fan is like being gay. An interesting analogy but one I think few would agree with.”

No not what I meant, I wasn’t really using that to refer to the consoles, just the walking hypocrisy that he is. I don’t really think you can pigeonhole owners of one brand of electronic equipment into a grouping of personality types or sexuality. Unless you’re talking about those who play their music out lof speakers on MP3 playing phones on buses & tubes, they’re all fucking twatbags.

How is the month on month gap narrowing putting daylight between the PS3 and the Wii? Notwithstanding that there's not just daylight but a whole fucking year's worth of illumination between the two already.
  • ronuds #27 3 years ago

Either EG has the worst mathematical skills ever, or they just like to rile people up. They do this kind of thing all the time. I expected 360 numbers to be in the hundreds and PS3 to be in the hundreds of thousands before opening the article.
  • onyxbox #28 3 years ago

all I know is that if 360 was the one selling that much you can bet your house every man and his dog at MS would be shouting about it.

btw: didn't the Advent Children blue-ray get released over there last week? (might explain how it overtook the Wii)
  • MeBrains #29 3 years ago

    @ronuds:
    same here. ;)

eg does like attention-grabbers. then again: that really seems to work in the UK.
  • SEVQA #30 3 years ago

Xbox 360 tumbles out of sight.
  • Widge #31 3 years ago

102 mil for the PSOne, wonder where that puts it in the league of consoles/handhelds. I'd assuming the original Gameboy is the king of the pile with that.
  • NotSoSlim #32 3 years ago

    @ onyxbox

Advent Children is not out for a few weeks and PS3 has been selling more than the Wii for 5 weeks in fact
  • KillerMonkey #33 3 years ago

The Wii probably is starting to sell less now because pretty much everyone in Japan has one..
  • patchbox360 #34 3 years ago

the ringing pile of shite - im glad
  • Sunyavadin #35 3 years ago

The Wii seems to be doing well globally.
Yes, but GAMES-wise it and the PS3 have the lowest attach rates.
I own two Japanese games for my Wii. And that's half of the Wii games I own. They may be the source of two of the three hardware options, but for software it's 99% bland, mediocre rehashes.
  • ronuds #36 3 years ago

"The Wii probably is starting to sell less now because pretty much everyone in Japan has one.."

    LOL

I'd probably put it more down to the fact there hasn't been a good, new game for ages. The PS3 has been getting popular franchises over the last month or two.

For YoY sales, the PS3 and Wii are still down from where they were at this point last year! O_o
  • El-Dev #37 3 years ago

    Good news for Sony.

Why do we never get these detailed figures for Europe?
  • maximusfarticus #38 3 years ago

  • TsunamiRR #40 3 years ago

I agree. Why should we give a fuck about Japan sales anyway? It's like it's on another world...
  • NotSoSlim #41 3 years ago

Well its not and sales to all 3 companies are very important even in Japan as u can tell my MS attempts to break it.
  • drumbaby #42 3 years ago

"Meanwhile the rest of us will continue to play a successful system with plenty of good games."

If with 'successful' you mean 'liked a lot by the people that like it a lot' than I'm with you. But succcessful in the sense of actually making money it's not or in the sense of actually meeting company performance targets.

The only system that can make an objective claim at success is the Wii.
  • chessboxer #45 3 years ago

    @ Widge

The Gameboy/Gameboy Color sold 118.69 million units, so the the PS1 is the 2nd best selling games console ever, or 3rd best if you include handheld console sales.

The Gameboy Advance (I think this includes the SP but not the Micro) sold 81.44 million and the DS (all versions) has shipped 100 million units.
  • El-Dev #46 3 years ago

    PS2 sold 140m units.

Do you guys also have bitter fights over what is the best brand of dishwasher? These are all publicly traded companies who put out products in order to make money for their shareholders. To feel the need to defend a big multinational company against another seems not only just a tad futile, but also rather misguided.
  • maximusfarticus #48 3 years ago

  • dsmx #49 3 years ago

PS2 is over 140 million units and is still selling, chances are it will get to 150 million units sold.

Siemens, clearly. Anyone who says otherwise is an idiot, and probably sleeps with their own mum.

    Famitsu
    Wii-19000
    PS3-19000

    hehehe
  • Inflatable #53 3 years ago

I don't really care that much about salesnumbers, and even less so if they're from a country with a totally different culture then mine.. Like all the Nintendo and handheld stuff for example, even if they sold a billion I still wouldn't be interested in it.. All I care about is my current preference platforms (PC & Xbox 360) selling well enough so their future is garanteed, and I think that's the case (even though the Japanese couldn't care less about both PC and Xbox 360, but thankfully this is a worldwide market and not just Japan)..
  • Erebu #54 3 years ago

    @ des

It is. Media Crate is the exact one.

  • Widge #56 3 years ago

  • foamy #57 3 years ago

+1 on all of the opinions that we shouldn't give a fuck about Japan. They're not that big. At least care about Russia or China, those are some big markets with a lot of people to buy games, not Japan. Not saying they should stop making games, but the importance they (game companies) give to actually selling there it's riddiculous in comparison to what it actually gives them in terms of profit.

    Oh well.
  • Smoped #58 3 years ago

"+1 on all of the opinions that we shouldn't give a fuck about Japan. They're not that big."

On an individual country basis they were the second biggest games market in the world in 2008. I guess it's all relative, a lot of Americans would say no-one should give a fuck about the UK. They're not that big.
  • El-Dev #60 3 years ago

Yeah fuck Japan it's not as if they have a large say in what we play over here.

I mean it's only where Nintendo and Sony are based.
  • Postumo #61 3 years ago
