PS Store re-launches here next week News

PlayStation 3 News by Robert Purchese

11 April, 2008

Sony has confirmed that the redesigned PlayStation Store will go live in Europe on 15th April, alongside firmware update version 2.30.

It also revealed the European Metal Gear Online beta test will be available on the Store from 17th April.

That date will also see releases of Warhawk expansion Broken Mirror, as well as Diabolical Dragons and Skyguard Upgrade packs for Lair.

The redesigned Store is no longer web-based and so will be faster and flashier. It has also been jumbled around so it is presented in a much clearer and sensible way.

You can watch a walkthrough of these changes in a video released yesterday.

Metal Gear Online is a separate, competitive online game that will be released alongside Metal Gear Solid 4 on 12th June. Pop over to our first impressions of Metal Gear Online to find out more.

Warhawk Operation: Broken Mirror adds a bunch of fresh maps to the fray as well as a vehicle to ferry troops around in.

We have no idea what is in the Lair packs, but Sony says there will be "exciting features and functions", which will hopefully make the original and rather dismal game a bit more fun.

Hmmm, upgrade packs for Lair? Do these include the rumoured addition of analogue stick controls to the game I wonder...

I'm surprised that EG didn't mention that this Store update requires the new v2.30 firmware update too so we've got that to look forward to on the 15th as well.

Very likely they will though I personally think those will only detract from the experience.

So the 'big treat' is some expansions packs and not WipEout HD then? Bah.

There will also be new content in the store when it opens on Tuesday, so basically we're getting two updates next week. W00t!

Sony Europe is just getting confirmation on this. It sounds like it is the case, but we'll wait for the official say so.

The big problems with Lair was not the controls. It was the layout and design of the game, it was broken from start to finish in many aspects. I'd go as far as say that the controls were the least of their problems.

@Darren

I'd be more interested in the Lair stuff if it included the rumoured addition of actual gameplay ;)

@Bertie - Fair enough, you can only report what you're told officially. However, I'm 100% certain that this store update requires a firmware update as it no longer uses the internal browser. This new firmware also adds support for DTS-HD MA too.

The 'big treat' is being able to download the beta trail of MGO, not the LAIR expansion packs ;)

Should any game that gets patched into shape get a re-review? Or only over-hyped disappointments?

I think in Lair's case, it could be... most reviews I read focussed on the fact that the sixaxis control method really killed the game for anyone playing it. This completely changes one core element of gameplay.

It'd nice to be able to see someone review the game analogue style and comment on it from that viewpoint. If the control method still sucks, the game still sucks ... then its a valuable piece of information in my book. A game not to bother with regardless of the sixaxis control being in it or not.

My Lair Review.

And again, the controls are not the biggest problem. It's a bad game.

oh don't worry, I've already internally whoohoo'd about mgso, but I've got nothing to question about that, its coming, I'm happy, end of story. Will Lair magically become good after an update? Thats my question...

Currently intrigued by the review posted above. Seems like alot more was broken than just the controls.

The only thing that would save Lair is if they've fixed the bloody awful framerate.
