Prototype PS3 install bug workaround News

PlayStation 3 News by Tom Bramwell

11 June, 2009

Activision has advised US PlayStation 3 owners who buy Prototype that they may need to free up some space on their hard disk to overcome an installation bug.

"If your PS3 tells you that you have insufficient hard drive space to install, even if you do, you are going to need to change the available space on your hard drive by 700MB," the customer support site explains (thanks Kotaku).

The publisher also said that a patch will be released on PlayStation Network "shortly".

We've asked Activision in the UK whether this will be a problem for those of you buying the game tomorrow in Europe.

If you ask us, it sounds an awful lot like the problem that afflicted Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction nearly two years ago. As we suggested then, you could always download a demo, or delete a few videos, or something like that. You'll figure it out - you're not stupid.

And if you get stuck for what to do while working on that, why not read our Prototype review?

Agreed. I played an hour of the PC version and thought it was downright dreadful. A graphically poor (bland), re-skinned Hulk game with no soul.

Hmm... And here I was ready to shell out for the PS3 version of the game. I guess I'll have to reconsider after all..

This has happened to me on 2 different ps3 games (Ratchett and Viking). I really think they should have it worked out by now......

There should NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER be a situation where a console game needs this type of workaround. EVER.

@MaxiSleep : No but it should not be used for a reason to not buying the game. Bugs in games should NEVER be a issue, but they are. Deal with reality.

well if you get the problem you could always install inFamous...or download the inFamous demo...or download inFamous videos off the PSN

something like that should fix the problem.

Like many others no doubt, I too have encountered this annoying issue when I tried to install Ratchet & Clank ToD on my then-new 320 GB HDD which had some 200 GB free at the time!!!

I'm actually surprised that this bug still has not been fixed by Sony in one of their numerous firmware updates because it strikes me as being an operating system bug related to certain hard drives not a game one specfically.

@Darren: I belive it's more a issue with the SDKs and/or developers check for disk space incorrectly. Also since this is fixed by a game update and not a firmware update.
Either way - it should have been addressed better by Sony.

I disagree that visible or disruptive bugs in games should be accepted. Have you ever encountered such a bug from a single (as far as I can remember) Nintendo game?

It's called quality control. The issue with install space is a KNOWN issue and should never ever occur again in any game. Sony's own test labs should be actively looking for it and failing any game in which it shows up.

Yep it's a re-skinned hulk game made by the hulk team no less. What seriouslypuzzles me is that Hulk Ultimate destruction had buildings that not only took damage from attacks but, also fell down when pounded enough. How the heck is that damage model missing from Prototype? It's like their engine went backwards a generation!
