Price cut boosts 360 sales by 32 per cent

Console reaches 6 million sales in Europe.

The Xbox 360 has sold six million units in Europe following a price cut for all three models in the region.

"We're very excited that more consumers in Europe are joining the ever-growing Xbox 360 community," said Chris Lewis, Xbox Europe almost-boss.

"We're now the best-value next-gen console on the market with an entry-level ERP of GBP 129.99, and consumers have clearly responded to that offering.

"We're supporting this momentum by putting launch-level investment into a European advertising campaign, launching this week, which shows how Xbox 360 is changing the way consumers experience entertainment," he added.

Last Friday, Microsoft reduced the price of the Xbox 360 across Europe. The Arcade unit now retails for GBP 129.99, the Premium machine for GBP 169.99 and the Elite model for GBP 229.99.

As well as titles such as Fable 2 and Lips, Microsoft is also due to revamp the Xbox Live dashboard and introduce Mii-style avatars to the online service later this year.

    Go Xbox \o/

Shame you'll ruin it all with the new update.....

(only joking - I will reserve judgment - but I HATE IT already, sorry!)

Still missing the blu playback tho MS you could catch more with that now poor HD DVD is gone (loving the fire sales still, thanks BDA!)

I think for that price I will use my money-off vouchers and get an Arcade so I can bring my hard drive back and forth between work and home. Anyone know if there are any issues with using the same hard drive on different machines?
  • systems #4 3 years ago

@lambtron - I was thinking of doing the same thing, but will wait for the Jasper chipset due soon. Then I can leave my old Zephyr at work and have the quiet Jasper at home. You'd better get yourself a nice foam-padded box for transporting your hard drive though, as they're expensive to replace.
  • Vandrius #5 3 years ago

And now if Sony had half a brain they'd drop the PS3 down to the premiums price and slaughter the 360.

Yeah, it'd cost em a bit upfront, but it'd be HUGE long-term.

Of course, this is sony. So they won't. Cause smarts aren't their strong point.
  • BTBAM #6 3 years ago

Vandrius - Sony don't need to drop their price; people will buy the PS3 even if it cost £3000 and had no games for it.
  • menage #7 3 years ago

Can't you just switch of those Avatars?

  • dr_faulk #8 3 years ago

Blue-ray add-ons would be a bonus, but DRM free HD movie purchases would set the Xbox going for the next ten years.

Either way, I love my Xbox.

  • captainrentboy #11 3 years ago

I would congratulate them if I actually knew what they were on before the price drop, if it was 5.99 million consoles a week ago then it's not that impressive :)
I'm glad they've actually achieved a sales surge, although I haven't really noticed it in my store, yeah we've sold more than usual but it hasn't been a whopping increase and the vast majority are still going for the Premium console ignoring the relatively dirt cheap Arcade unit.
  • bioreit #12 3 years ago

Not surprised about this to be honest - the key thing is whether the momentum remains in the run-up to Christmas.

What I want MS to do is allow a central store for Gamertags - like on a Windows Home Server. For those of us with more than one 360 (I have an upstairs one for serious online sessions and a downstairs one for more casual, single-player games), it's a pain having to recover GTs via Live or memory cards. And with the console now so cheap, I fully expect it to take off a bit more as a decent Media Centre Extender, so I doubt I'll be the only one who wants this feature. Needs to be made a bit quieter before it goes mainstream, though.

I know there's probably all sorts of reasons why it can't work, but a man can dream...
  • JetSetWilly #13 3 years ago

The opening paragraph makes it sound like they've sold 6 million in under a week. It has sold 6 million in Europe, and there was also a price cut last week :p
  • 4thVariety #14 3 years ago

Just like EA said on Gamasutra
Estimates for the 2008 calendar year see the PlayStation 3 pulling ahead in Europe, with the Xbox 360 expected to sell only between 1.5 and 2.5 million units.
    [link url=http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story =17206
    ]http://ww w.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_in...[/link]

That currently puts the 360 at about 2 Million so far this year. Not too shabby, but it's also not setting the world on fire. Especially when Sony aims at selling six million PS3 units in Europe only this year!
  • Buztafen #15 3 years ago

The momentum doesnt need to continue till christmas, its all about waiting for when the parents of all the little timmys around the world eventually snap and are forced to buy a new 'console thing' for them....reckon about the arse end of nov for that 'surge'....
  • captainrentboy #16 3 years ago

In the MCV magazine we get in work the front page news story was the 360 price drop, and also how they intend to spend freakin' millions in marketing this chrimbo. Clever marketing, focussing not only on Gears Of War 2, but Lips, Banjo 3 and the new Scene It will surely help them achieve their targets.
Adverts with folk parachuting from the sky carrying 360s does not lead to little timmy pleading with his parents to get him one, why do these companies (Sony are definitely guilty of this) insist on these 'clever' little adverts? People want ads with footage of the game in question, blaring 'hip' music in the background and folks being seen to have fun playing the game in question. It's not difficult.
  • Buztafen #17 3 years ago

All that was need for me to buy in M$ christmas 2006 was a short advert featuring the cover of a song by tears for fears!

    Its a mad world init!

Apart from XBLA games. If you bought them on console A, you'll only be able to play them on console B if you're connected to the internet.

  • IneptPercy #27 3 years ago

I think it will have a huge effect this xmas as long as the shops don't push the PS3 more than the 360.

Mother" Little Jimmy wants to play all the new games this christmas on is 14" portable TV, he isn't aloud online either, he has a PS2 now what would you recommend"

Game employee "the PS3 is the one for you with its HD Blu r... ermmmm, how about its wireless in.... errmmmm, free onli.... errrmm, backwards com.... errrmmm its only £299...., actually the 360 arcade will him just fine and its only £129.99"

It probably won't happen like that but that what should happen.

Personnally I am hoping this will start to drag the PS3 cost down so I can finaly afford one (or justify to my other half to be exact)
  • The-Bodybuilder #28 3 years ago

    >"but my only concern comes down to one question, Are MS Breaking even with all these price drops, let alone make profits?"

Why should that be your concern? Or anyone's for that matter? That's MS problem.
Let's just worry about the games. OK?
  • Thunderbolt #29 3 years ago

    >"but my only concern comes down to one question, Are MS Breaking even with all these price drops, let alone make profits?"

As mentioned before the losses with hardware with be recovered by the sales of software as the X-box has the highest attach rate.

Market penetration is the goal here.

    Kotaku? Are you serious????

    Anyway.. Gi.biz had this

"GFK Chart-Track has told GamesIndustry.biz that sales of Xbox 360 hardware rose 32 per cent over the weekend of Microsoft's latest price reduction.

In comparison, sales of Sony's PlayStation 3 were down eight per cent on the previous weekend. "

Start a war over that one.
  • Arwin #39 3 years ago

So, surges, means that in the UK, the console got a 32% sales increase over the weekend? Wow. ;) (I think that's on gamesindustry so I'm sure we'll hear about it here soon ... ?). I guess that's why they choose to focus on that 6 million figure rather than the sales increase ... doesn't sound as impressive.

I guess the value of the pricecut will have to show itself over the holiday period.
  • GamerG #40 3 years ago

32% increase is very good seeing as there was like 3 days notice!

Its not like Sony who announce the cut a month in advance so sales dry up and then get a substantial boost!

I expect this weekend will be a bumper one for 360 as a lot of people get paid monthly and the new pricing even brings the console within people who get paid weekly's price range now they are aware of the cut (it was in all the UK papers over the weekend)

Yes, it doesn't work. The profile and drm are tied to the console somehow, not the hard disk. If you want to transfer saves, you're better off storing your profile and saves on a memory card.

Some bitter fanboys in this thread...

    @simakperrce

It's good to know because the following ensure that many more games will be developed over the next few years:

    - The console is adequately specced and powered for modern games.
    - Games development is relatively easy for the platform
    - There is a large and ever growing userbase of the console
    - 360 users are buying plenty of games for their systems
    - The online service is well populated - people influence each other into buying games, and the service cuts piracy

It makes no difference if no one else buys my model of toaster or dishwasher, as long as I bought a functional product.

", brainwashed drones who slurp up every piece of spin are good for my job prospects. Keep spreading the word kiddies!"
Definition of IRONY. You would not in a million years post this furiously in a similar ps3 article. In fact, the fact that you post so passionately so many times hints at a deep rooted zealot character. Want to talk about your issues?

"I do find it interesting though that has not only the title of this article been changed, its whole SUBJECT has been not so subtly altered. The announcement that the 360 has passed 6 million units (according to Microsoft one assumes, as no tracking body has been credited for this particular figure) was made yesterday, and clearly refers to the improvements shown from the first EU-wide price cuts made earlier this year. While today the announcement was made by chart-track that in the UK sales are up 32% this weekend following the most recent price cuts.

So, there are performance changes caused by two separate price-cuts over two very different timecales (months versus a single weekend) somehow conflated together into one piece of giant "news"."

Wtf exactly is your point? WTF does it infuriate you so much? They sold more, deal with it.

  • metalnut #62 3 years ago

"Proof that the british public are cheap bastards."

Yup - but also that they know a good deal when they see one. When it comes to gaming outside the novelty Wii factor, you have a choice between paying (Amazon) £150 for a 360 or £285-295 for a PS3. Given how similar they are in the eyes of the public (ie you can play GTA IV and Force Unleashed on both of them and they look the same), despite what Sony's marketing machine would like people to believe, that's a pretty hard thing to ignore. Blu-Ray was a nice bonus and probably just about justified a £80-100 markup, but it starts to get shaky at this kind of price difference. I think Sony will find it hard to continue the gains it has made earlier in the year if doesn't make at least *some* price move before xmas, LBP / Home or no.
  • bioreit #63 3 years ago

    @ miiiguel

Yeah, I could use the memory card (as I do already), but I'm lazy - hence the multiple 360s in the first place (no. 3 is on it's way, as is PS3 no. 1 :-) )

I mean, my WHS will be on 24/7, so they could surely just write a plug-in for it, possibly using some of the Games for Windows - Live +whatever they call it tech.

I think the most telling thing is that he never, ever gets his knickers in a twist when a story or headline or anything is even slightly possible of being misconstrued as pro-PS3/anti-360 and there are several, purely down to the vagaries of the written English language. He only ever gets upset when it's perceived to be anti-his beloved-that-he-denies-he-loves. See MGS 4 review comments for some rather excellent examples of mouth-frothingness.

Look the fact is, I'd already read this news on about four different sites and the fact remains on all them that the 360 hit 6 million sales in Europe. When I read the same thing here, I got the same information. No more, no less - just different words.

Your rattling on about EG bias is becoming tedious to say the least.

And to any of you pointing out that:

    - 6 million doesn't mean anything unless you know how many the sold before.
    - 32% doesn't mean anything because they could have sold 2 the week before.

    Grow the fuck up.

    - MS have (possibly) sold 6 million in Europe now. It's just a landmark figure.
    - I think it's safe to say MS sold a few more than 2 consoles. You're not make a point because we all know that all 3 companies are shifting 1000's of units every week so 32% increase is probably significant.

At the end of the day I think you're all (I hope) smart enough to read that article and glean what info from it you need. In my case, nothing particulary important.

Complaining about it is a bit silly really.

"Does MS not realise that it is no longer next gen but this gen! i do have a 360 as well but it was next gen year 3 years ago!! "

I don't think Sony has said that the next gen has started yet.

ROFL. My thread is about 30 posts short... gotta love that /ignore list.

Spot the PS3 fan boy... LOL

@Confounder - The Xbox 360 may have a lot of shooters but it has a bigger and more varied selection of high quality games than the PS3 IMO by virtue of it being out a year longer. It'll be some time before the PS3 can match the 360's games catalogue IMO, if it ever does. And I'm saying that as an owner of both machines. Oh and I don't particularly like shooters or online games either! :p

The Xbox 360 isn't just the best value console around, it's easily the best current gen console for games, period. The Wii doesn't even come close (I own it too) and the PS3 is still playing catchup (e.g. BioShock etc.). Sure the 360's build quality has been flaky (to say the least, I've been through six!) but I can't deny that it's given me a lot of entertainment despite the issues.

In an ideal world, the Xbox 360 would be the market leader but perhaps because of the hardware issues Microsoft are paying the price by being second. Whatever, at least they won't be stupid enough enough to rush the 360's successor out without testing it thoroughly next time... ;)

    "Spot the PS3 fan boy"

    Which one?:)
  • crazyhorse174 #84 3 years ago

If you want a cheap system with poor build quality and lots of unimaginative, brain cell killing FPS then buy a Xbox 360. If you want the best variety of games and a great entertainment system, get a PS3.

Do people honestly still use this argument and expect it to hold water?
  • Thunderbolt #85 3 years ago

Back in the day all the 'chavs' had PS2s whereas the X-box was seen as a bit elitist.

    My how the times changed

Yep, I pretty confident there's no problem.

I refuse to ignore people just in case I miss some comedy gold.

Seriously, though, fix the RROD issues, then advertise that.

Please, if you add any more irony, the universe will implode!

And because you see as a problem, quite clearly it is one.

Yes, so you can ramble on? No, you should use your brain before you post, if you don't be ready to be torn to shreds.

    @ Confounder

'If you want a cheap system with poor build quality and lots of unimaginative, brain cell killing FPS then buy a Xbox 360. If you want the best variety of games and a great entertainment system, get a PS3'

I think your a tad confused, but feel the need to post something stupid. Well Done.

Variety is the same, mostlt all titles are multi platform now. Why are there a lot of FPS's on the market? Simple, people like to play them!!

In my opinion all the 1st party exclusives on both consoles offer something exciting and intuitive for all.

  • Ryze #95 3 years ago

@Arbiter, Confounder, Rash', smelly, headbog, banfoi, swam, Apologie...

Why ignore you, when reading your retarded shite and then taking the piss out of your idiocy is so entertaining?

I can't believe how quickly my day's work passes when I glance at these pages and reply in between tasks.

    Magic.

This Arbiter fellow is off his rocker, why would someone get so upset about whether a consoel got a "sales surge" or a "sales boost"??

Taking Fanboyism to new levels imo!

Yeah, I started to type thesaurus, and then gave up and put dictionary instead.

"What was this thread all about anyway, I’ve forgotten now."

You called somebody a cunt for saying that all people who lived in council houses were scum, then they called you a chav, then you got all pretentious and wordy in response. I think you called them a cunt afterwards too.
  • Marshall2008 #101 3 years ago

The 360 should do well with your average family this year. Cheap price of entry, loads and loads of cheap games (plus pre-owned prices are incredibly low just now).

They don't care about live, they don't care about blu-ray. They only care that its £129 and it plays DVD's.

Microsoft could scoop up a lot of cheap ass PS2 owners that are used to memory cards and plugging their consoles in via composite into their 14" colour CRT's.
  • DjFlex52 #102 3 years ago

evilfoxhound, Arbiter, Confounder and the "all-knowing" Les getting in a lather about a console they've all repeating criticized but don't let others do the same in their Sony threads.....no, no....bad 360 owners!

Why are they even posting in this thread anyway?
  • DjFlex52 #103 3 years ago

My work was done here when EG changed the title of this article earlier today.

    @Arbiter

You think too much of yourself....EG didn't do it because of you, Arbiter...lol

  • BillyBrush #106 3 years ago

    @Arbiter

Throughout this entire mess I've never written anything either pro-Sony or anti-Microsoft

Noooo, of course not, that wouldn't be like you, Smelly loves it too that's why he always claims his Xbox broke on him 7 times, and foxhound, he loves it as well, you can just tell...you guys are like the Microsoft protection society!

Seriously, don't bother, Xbox360 is a sucessful console and is here to stay for this gen, people who buy one will enjoy playing great games on them, and they make Sony work a bit harder (you likey them Trophies no?)

I don't know if you guys go to bed and take 2 hours to calm down the 360 rage before you can go to sleep, but it kinda seems that way a lot of the time....go to VG chartz, they sold more worldwide this week, they will next week, but then take some tablets, calm down, the PS3 is still real, it still exists, still you're little precious

If you develop a Nintendo game in this mental state it won't suit the platforms they have...they want Brain Training not Insanity Unlimited, calm down, have some Tea, get over yourself, you'll feel a lot better

  • BillyBrush #107 3 years ago

..and yes, Ninja Gaiden 2 is fantastic, fast, responsive, beautifully animated...well done buying a 360...good value no?

  • FWB #109 3 years ago

Even I'm contemplating buying one. Just have to figure out what I'd want to play on it.
  • Calgon #110 3 years ago

Ah you see there are sad little gamers with the "noble Xbox hater" syndrome, may own one(Im sure some resent the fact that even they see it as an essential purchase... theyd rather see another label on those game boxes so they could allow themselves enjoy them more) or seem totally objective as long as things are looking the way they want them to be...

The reverse of that happens and theres talks of 360 exploding(or still not improved), missquoted devs, or heavily bias slanted comparisons with other consoles, how do they react?
"negative spin? Nah LOL its just silly M$ losing, they are doomed innit. See told ya, serves them right :)"

As soon as it looks like MS are gaining momentum/anyone suggests they will, or the 360 is shown in a more positive light than the competition even if its true... well you know the story.

Ive pointed out missleading headlines, quotes taken out of context and unnecessary bias commentary/journalism in quite a few EG articles over the years... didnt see them complaining then.

Is Arbiter the same guy who went mental at everyone after Sonys most disasterous E3(you know the one) pretending they had the best one and hurling fanboy insults at everyone who disagreed?... If so perhaps he still harbours bitterness, owning a peice of electronics doesnt mean you are totally rational in your judgement of it especially in comparison to others that you own(you can still have some anti-xbox sentiment).

Some try and pretend one corporation is more of a nobel choice than the other, quick to point out all the dirt and in some cases propaganda for one... dismissing and downplaying any good that gets pointed out and any wrongs done by the other sides = Theres no point pretending, play what you want for the right reasons and let others do the same, stop pretending you are behaving in trollish ways for any reason other than the next dribbling dork of a hater/fanboy.
  • TRUTH #111 3 years ago

Alot of cross PS3/360 games run/look better on 360 - and cheaper too!
