Pre-order Lost Odyssey and get MS Points
A thousand of them, no less.
HMV is offering 1000 Microsoft Points to anyone pre-ordering Lost Odyssey before its release on Friday.
That adds up to GBP 8.50 / EUR 10.20, and it's nearly enough to download an old Xbox Original like Psychonauts.
The full HMV price is GBP 39.99. Elsewhere GAME is selling it for GBP 39.99, Play is offering it for GBP 37.99, Gameplay for GBP 37.99 and Amazon is the cheapest at GBP 32.99. All without added incentives.
On that evidence, the best value for money is the HMV deal. Mind you, you might already have a Play-Asia English copy that went on sale at the beginning of the month for USD 49.90 (GBP 25.33).
Enough of the numbers; Lost Odyssey is a traditional Japanese role-playing game from the makers of Blue Dragon. But it is much better.
The content is more adult, and some of the dreams immortal amnesiac protagonist Kaim Argonar recalls are wonderfully morose.
Touches of excellence, then, but often disrupted by archaic mechanics such as random battles.

Erm, GAME have a bonus level and weapon pre-order thing going.
Edit: Dammit, woodnotes!

'Archaic mechanics'?!? A bit like saying a horror movie is crap for using suspensefull music.
Picture the scene -- You're on your last legs, no health potions, you just used the last of your MP to scrape through the last fight. If you could just get to that save point at the top of the screen. Point your man in that direction, close your eyes...
and run.
Beats the crap out of dodging enemies all the time, because in the end you can't be bothered. Where's the sweaty palms moment?

Random battles are shit and archaic. I don't see the argument. Every time I run into one in Lost Odyssey I think "OH FFS".

It just reeks of lazy game design to me: as if it its easier to have us 'trip' the battle system rather than populate maps. Blue Dragon handled it much better, I thought.
Makes me jump, too. Bastards.

"Oh look, there's a single enemy over there! Let's start a fight!"
And then suddenly there are 8 of them when you get into the battle screen. I don't disagree that being able to see your foes is nice, but the representation of a whole mob as one enemy just seems poor to me.

Most game mechanics are archaic, you just don't happen to like this particular one. Maybe you should play something you like instead.
Opinion is not fact.

Often disrupted by a genre-defining aspect of the game? That's a bit like playing an FPS and moaning about the first person view or playing a Mario game and moaning you have to jump on a turtle's head.

Anyway, pre-ordered this long time ago from Amazon along with the Oficial Game Guide, and got no goodies. At least I know everything will come on time and proprelly packaged.
