Pre-order Lost Odyssey and get MS Points

A thousand of them, no less.

HMV is offering 1000 Microsoft Points to anyone pre-ordering Lost Odyssey before its release on Friday.

That adds up to GBP 8.50 / EUR 10.20, and it's nearly enough to download an old Xbox Original like Psychonauts.

The full HMV price is GBP 39.99. Elsewhere GAME is selling it for GBP 39.99, Play is offering it for GBP 37.99, Gameplay for GBP 37.99 and Amazon is the cheapest at GBP 32.99. All without added incentives.

On that evidence, the best value for money is the HMV deal. Mind you, you might already have a Play-Asia English copy that went on sale at the beginning of the month for USD 49.90 (GBP 25.33).

Enough of the numbers; Lost Odyssey is a traditional Japanese role-playing game from the makers of Blue Dragon. But it is much better.

The content is more adult, and some of the dreams immortal amnesiac protagonist Kaim Argonar recalls are wonderfully morose.

Touches of excellence, then, but often disrupted by archaic mechanics such as random battles.

Also already got it from Play Asia, don't know why they keep slateing the random battles on here, it's a JRPG after all.

I didn't like Blue Dragon, but this looks rather interesting...i'm not a fan of turn-based battles, but this game is meant to be really good! I don't know what to do.....

GAME actually do include some additional in-game (downloadable) content for free if you pre-order with them, and if you type in 'feboffer' (or 'feboffers'?) when checking out you get £3 off. And you also won't have to wait a year for it to arrive like HMV.

    All without added incentives.

Erm, GAME have a bonus level and weapon pre-order thing going.

    Edit: Dammit, woodnotes!

"...often disrupted by archaic mechanics such as random battles."

'Archaic mechanics'?!? A bit like saying a horror movie is crap for using suspensefull music.

Picture the scene -- You're on your last legs, no health potions, you just used the last of your MP to scrape through the last fight. If you could just get to that save point at the top of the screen. Point your man in that direction, close your eyes...

    and run.

Beats the crap out of dodging enemies all the time, because in the end you can't be bothered. Where's the sweaty palms moment?

...Didn't know Play Asia had englich copies! Of course I've been in san francisco for most of last week (yea I'm using that as an excuse)....er it's a little known fact that SF has no internet whatso-ever. Yea er Godzilla ripped it out and..and...

Review link now works. Missed that GAME stuff, well spotted.

Random battles are shit and archaic. I don't see the argument. Every time I run into one in Lost Odyssey I think "OH FFS".

If you have an HMV student card you also get a further 10% off that :) = £35.99

I'd much prefer a random battle rather than picking and choosing which monster you want to fight, where is the fun in that? Most people would avoid fights and then complain that their characters are too weak to fight bosses etc... which would then lead to grinding out monsters for ages to get to a certain level. Also it's not like lost odyssey will put you in battle after battle, the random battles are quite well spread out and i never get frustrated with getting into another fight.

To be fair, the random battles aren't that prevalent here and they do add a sense of "excitement", or rather anticipation.

It just reeks of lazy game design to me: as if it its easier to have us 'trip' the battle system rather than populate maps. Blue Dragon handled it much better, I thought.

    Makes me jump, too. Bastards.

All Pre-orders have the activation card...it's in the box. For the extra content.

I prefer random battles to having the enemies on the map. It always looks rather naff done the latter way.

"Oh look, there's a single enemy over there! Let's start a fight!"

And then suddenly there are 8 of them when you get into the battle screen. I don't disagree that being able to see your foes is nice, but the representation of a whole mob as one enemy just seems poor to me.

Random battles are shit and archaic.

Most game mechanics are archaic, you just don't happen to like this particular one. Maybe you should play something you like instead.

    Opinion is not fact.

HMV did this instore with Mass Effect did they not? Don't think a preorder was required.

"Touches of excellence, then, but often disrupted by archaic mechanics such as random battles."

Often disrupted by a genre-defining aspect of the game? That's a bit like playing an FPS and moaning about the first person view or playing a Mario game and moaning you have to jump on a turtle's head.
  • miiiguel #19 4 years ago

Whining about random battles is becoming boring.

Anyway, pre-ordered this long time ago from Amazon along with the Oficial Game Guide, and got no goodies. At least I know everything will come on time and proprelly packaged.

I got the GAME offer. Someone already pointed out all the deals going on there, so my thunder has been stolen, and then resold on eBay.
  • Scimarad #21 4 years ago

I can't believe there are people on here defending random encounters!

    Takes all sorts, I suppose:-)

"Pre-order"? It's not out in PAL yet? It's been out in Australia for most of the month. What the hell?
