Portal: First Slice for NVIDIA users News

PC News by Robert Purchese

10 January, 2008

NVIDIA has struck gold by entering into a new agreement with Valve to collaborate on development and distribution of its games.

To show its support, Valve is immediately giving Steam users with NVIDIA hardware four free games: Portal: First Slice, Half-Life 2: Deathmatch, Half-Life: Lost Coast and Peggle Extreme.

First Slice is an extended demo of the delicious little puzzler, for those wondering, but if you already have the full game you may have problems getting it to show on your Steam list - as Tom is finding out now.

To claim your free games, just pop over to the Steam website and prove you own NVIDIA bits by taking The Test.

"More Steam gamers, including myself, play on NVIDIA hardware than any other GPU," said Doug Lombardi, public mouth of Valve. "That's a testament to the company's long history of innovation and quality."

"By working together with NVIDIA to expand our development, distribution, and marketing efforts, we're increasing our ability to serve the millions of NVIDIA customers logging onto Steam and help us prepare for our next generation of content."

The two new best friends will also work together on upcoming Team Fortress 2 and Counter-Strike competitions for real-life people in the actual world.

Sounds like quite a deal to us, and it will be interesting to see how it affects AMD/ATI and its customers.

Demos and stuff that used to be / should be free anyway. I wouldn't bother even if I had a Nvidia card.

Hm, free Half-Life 2 deathmatch. Why not? Already have the rest with the exception of Half-Life Lost Coast, which I haven't even heard of until today.

Peggle Extreme...

Hmm, is this the same demo that came with the Orange Box from Steam? Or is this a bigger/full version that's actually worth me getting?

Oh goody, Nvidia take another step towards completely dominating the market - soon they'll have got rid of all that nasty 'competition' that keeps bringing prices down and forcing innovation. Well done Valve, thanks a lot for helping them on their way.

It was Half Life 2 aye, and I seem to remember them claiming it ran best on ATI hardware at the time too.

Funny how things change isn't it (not that money would have influenced the change at all, oh no....)? ;)

*hugs Nvidia card*

Yup, just tried the offer, and it's not showing on my games list at all.

It's just the first third of the game apparently, so no point in getting it if you already have Portal.

And Peggle Extreme is the same demo/limited game that came with the Orange Box, so no point getting that either. Oh well.

If you have the Orange Box it looks like there is nothing worth bothering with here, it's all included, isn't it?

Peggle Extreme is the demo, the full game is Peggle Deluxe.

I've The Orange Box on 360 so is good to have a go at Portal on the PC even though I've no plans to buy it twice. I've also already got Peggle Deluxe as it was £6 over the xmas period, but Peggle Extreme is a welcome addition with new Half Life themed levels :)

Gee I don't know about all this talk of prices 'coming down'.. Top of the line cards still retail for as much as the Voodoo I did 10-11 years ago, sometimes even much more. The competition has however privileged us sensible PC gamers with decent mid-range solutions.

FYI, Half Life 2 Deathmatch used to be free with earlier HL2 purchases, but is now retail. I had it before, but had I bought HL2 a lot later than I did, then I wouldn't have received it.

It's also a lot of fun. Not everyone's cup of tea, but an absolute blast with friends on a good server. Just give it a shot if you've previously missed out on it.
