Portal coming to Xbox Live Arcade

"Still Alive" due out this year.

An expanded version of Eurogamer's Game of the 2007, Portal, is be released this autumn, subtitled 'Still Alive'.

Amusingly unveiled at Microsoft's E3 2008 press briefing by the one and only GLADoS, the beefed-up version will be coming exclusively to the Xbox 360 via Xbox Live Arcade, Microsoft or rather she said.

Emerging to cheers from the press, GLADoS utttered: "Due to previous tests being solvable, we are currently manufacturing new test chambers for only the most qualified subjects."

Published by Valve and Microsoft, the official press release states that Portal: Still Alive "features the full award-winning Portal single-player game from Valve plus a new challenge mode". Teasingly vague, but it'll do. If it's cheap.

At the time of publication it wasn't made clear whether Portal: Still Alive is simply a console exclusive or whether a similarly expanded PC edition will also be coming out via Steam at the same time. Expect clarification shortly.

We're seeing Valve later this week, when we'll get the chance to speak to Gabe Newell again, so check back for more on Portal: Still Alive soon.

  • InsoFox #3 4 years ago

It's suggested that this is actually an expanded edition of the original with extra levels and such.

"Sequel" sounds a bit strong, sounds more like a special edition of the original with additional content.

It's not Portal 2. XBox Arcade special version of Portal.

If it was Portal 2 (and it didn't suck) I could well have been a 360 owner.

    But this? No ta.

What's with the uber attention-grabbing half-truth headlines of late, eh? ;) You had me worried for a moment there

So what exactly is new about this version? I would have sworn the PC version had a challenge mode.
  • Varsity #11 4 years ago

    It's a "2008 exclusive". Meaning that it'll be on PC January 1 2009, I like to think. :p

Fingers crossed that the rest of the Orange Box could also be split up for XBL like they have been on PC. Might add a little more longevity to TF2 after the thickle X-Box Live crowd have moved onto the latest sensation.

Doh! I thought this was Portal 2!

Having literally just finished Portal last night on my recently purchased Orange Box (360 version) there'll have to be serious extras and a really cheap price point for me to consider. Both of which may be possible, considering Valve's seeming want to not screw over gamers.... :0)

Is the extra stuff Valve-developed? It only says Valve-published.
  • KungFuSpoon #16 4 years ago

Hopefully it can also be acquired as an expansion to the 360 Orange Box.
  • Varsity #17 4 years ago

I expect it is an expansion, in terms of requiring the Orange Box to be owned already. Portal has about 1GB of textures etc. and I can't see MS pushing that much data through Live. ;-)

PC is a different matter, as ever.

Great, i'm just playing through portal on mi mac for the 1st time & loving it to bits. But i heard it's a short game so i guess the love ain't gonna last to long, still i'll consider gettin this when released if the rest of the game lives upto the first coupla hours.

hmmm, 2 slightly conflicting quotes there:

"Due to previous tests being solvable, we are currently manufacturing new test chambers for only the most qualified subjects." sounds like actual new levels, whereas

Portal: Still Alive "features the full award-winning Portal single-player game from Valve plus a new challenge mode". sounds like just a new challenge mode, like the least portals/least steps modes...

if it's actual new levels, i'll buy it in a heartbeat, but if it's just new modes then i doubt i'll bother... really hoping for the former.

I'd love some new "chambers" for the little gem but if the new achievements mean I have to do all the least step and least time challenges all over again I'm going to pass. I can't go through that frustration all over again for 200 points.

This and Fable 2 are likely to save me from Ebaying my 360 and turning to PC gaming as I despair at the lack of breadth in the 360 catalogue ...
  • MouzerMalti #23 4 years ago

It could be available for the PC too.
If not, meh, we've had custom-made chambers for months :)
