Looks like that little HD icon confirms some sort of HDTV compatibility!
Might just grab one of these then! :oD

    I dont get this.

So you want to record TV on your playstation?

But to get the channels you more than likely have SKY or some other TV service with a built in digital recorder (they are standard these days)

So why the FUCK do you need to faff about recording TV on a playstation when we already have a digibox?
  • dadrester #3 4 years ago

when's this out? i'll be getting one as long as it's not too expensive. sub £40 and i'd consider sub £30 and i'll deffo get it.

  • Catweasel #5 4 years ago

This is why it's a really, really good idea: [link url=http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=93416

It will be possible to export TV recordings made with PS3's forthcoming digital TV receiver in a standard file format and store them anywhere you like, Sony explained today.

Mark Bunting, a producer at Sony's Cambridge Studio, which is working on the software for the PlayTV device, showed how the MPEG-2 video files could be moved from the PlayTV interface to the PS3's home menu.

From there, they can be moved to another storage device such as a memory stick, backup hard drive or PC. There is no copy protection in place and no time limit on how long the recording can be kept. Asked what you could do with the file Bunting said: "Anything you like, really, as long as you do it legally. It's in its raw format."

Try doing that with your Sky+/Virgin/BT Vision/Freeview Playback box.

Thanks Frod and LetsGo, that seems pretty good then, I have a old PVR and its one of the best things I've ever brought. This + Remote PSP + a 250GB HDD upgrade = heaven.

Love the interface. Love the way it lets you have control of your own MPEG-2 files. If it supports HD it's a sale.
  • LeD #11 4 years ago

So let's say you have Sky HD or equivalent, how will PlayTV work with this? Does it only have analog in, or can you plug an external set top box via HDMI or something?
  • sopaman #12 4 years ago

sleek! It's looking pretty nice. I wonder how much they'll charge for this.
  • Jonsend #13 4 years ago

It will support HD freeview broadcasts. Not sky etc.

@Pac-man ate my wife .. "Try doing that with your Sky+/Virgin/BT Vision/Freeview Playback box."

I can already move recordings from my freeview box (Topfield 5800) to PC, and have been able to for nearly three years, so the PS3 is offering absolutely nothing new there. Sony should focus on getting some decent 1st party games out to tempt more people into buying a PS3. They should not be waste time and money turning the PS3 into a jack-of-all-trades-but master-of-none piece of equipment.
  • dsmx #16 4 years ago

Why do people keep saying sony should concentrate on making games, sony is a hardware and entertainment company not just a games company. Sony are trying to make the PS3 the all in 1 home entertainment system it stands to reason that they would create something like this. Also I very much doubt that the people who made this hardware are going to be making games.

Yes because Sony only hire one group of people to work on all of their products.
  • GitSomE_UK #18 4 years ago

Oh Refrenz if only you were in charge of Sony you'd show 'em...

I guess millions of USD in dev costs etc. were paid out without doing consumer research, a feasibility study, prototype, pilot and focus group they just did it.

I don't want several boxes around my TV I only want 4 - DVD/Cinema Sound, PS3, X360 and my Wii. This fits the bill perfectly for me and no doubt others too.
  • DodgyPast #19 4 years ago

    Definitely an interesting addition.

Wonder if it'll work with UK tv, with a US PS3.

I do like the more open approach Sony are taking rather than trying to force us to stick only within their own eco-system.

Are the internal drives SATA or IDE?
  • GitSomE_UK #20 4 years ago

Any size notebook 2.5" SATA disk will fit a PS3 even the higher 7200 rpm jobs.

Soon as it's out I'm upgrading my drive.
  • IneptPercy #21 4 years ago

Surely they are still missing the PS3's key audience... the gamer...

I like games and still have no intention of buying one.
  • Pac-man-ate-my-wife #22 4 years ago

    @Refrenz

Does it do it straight out the box? To a handy memory stick or similar format? In a standard format?

Honest questions. I've got a Humax and to transfer programmes you need to buy a special cable, download and install user unfriendly software and then often have the whole process end in a corrupt file.
  • geoffw22 #23 4 years ago

looks cool, I wonder if it will upscale all TV broadcasts to HD :/
  • dadrester #24 4 years ago

i assume you'll be able to watch live tv in 'home' too, and that it will stream to others in your apartment. very clever.
  • urban #25 4 years ago

thats what you call a gadget.
  • NewYork #26 4 years ago

Would have been perfect if it could receive input from outside video sources, allowing you to record Sky.
