    Nice.

Although I do fear it will join the 360 one in the 'want but can't be bothered to waste money on it as I have a USB keyboard' pile....
  • Ryze #2 4 years ago

Weird - so it clic ks over the TOP of the control pad - above the sticks?

    weird.
  • penhalion #3 4 years ago

Um am I missing something here? Looking at the design of it. How do you use the joypad, when it's attached. At least with the 360 one, it doesn't get in the way of the controls in any way simply by virtue of how it's attached.

Do EG have any pictures of this actually attached to a dual shock 3?

    Edit: Spell check man!

I just bought a €5 USB keyboard. It's great, I sometimes also use it for my PC.
  • Retroid #5 4 years ago

Well, that's an... atypical positioning of a keypad.

    O_o
  • Peew971 #6 4 years ago

The positioning seems atrocious but it looks cool.
  • RabidChild #7 4 years ago

    Hmm, black plastic y-fronts.

How are you supposed to use the shoulder buttons?
  • alimokrane #8 4 years ago

Here is a Picture of it attached to a controller
Picture of Keyboard attached to Controller

IT looks very ackwardly placed to be honest.

I assume you're supposed to switch position up/down between the game control and the keyboard, but if that's the case, why is there no handling grip on the latter?

Reminds me of the original Xbox controller, where you had to stretch your thumbs upward to actually reach the analog stick and the top buttons.

Needs to be light to balance well with a sixaxis. Are ds3's much heavier due to rumble motors?
  • Dizzy #11 4 years ago

On top? That is a bit weird...
  • Widge #12 4 years ago

Yeah, not at the top of my purchase list since I've got a usb keyboard attached.
  • justsomeone #13 4 years ago

is that an email shortcut button?
  • penhalion #14 4 years ago

    @alimokrane

Thanks for the picture link of it actually attached.

That's where I thought it went and can't see how that's useful in any way what so ever. I picked up my PS3 controller to try to get a better imagining of how this can be used and I'm stumped. The 360 one I simply thumb type with whyle holding the controller normally. This one seems designed to force me to abandon any type of useful control of a game when typing on it. I just don't understand why they have done this!
  • Darkedge #15 4 years ago

where's the touchpad it's supposed to have?
Does look terrible really but that matches the dualshock for uncomfortable design to me anyway
  • Darren #16 4 years ago

I find the 360's Chatpad very handy so I'd welcome something similar for the PS3 especially as the on-screen keyboard is clumsy for typing out messages quickly (even though the DualShock 3's D-pad makes it less painful that on the 360 in those pre-Chatpad days). It does look awkwardly placed though and appears as if it might unbalance the controller making it top heavy but I guess I'd have to try it to be sure. Definitely interested in buying one though.

How long will your thumbs have to be to actually use that thing comfortably?! I don't use the 360 one because I have a nice USB keyboard but at least it's next to the thumbs while this is just... Wrong.

  • Execta #19 4 years ago

Nice design, but pretty hard to type with that. So I'll just buy an USB keyboard.
  • michaelius #20 4 years ago

Looks to be more usefull when detached.

Still i don't see any point in it but then again probably most other console owners don't have gaming pc and netbook at their disposal.

"This one seems designed to force me to abandon any type of useful control of a game when typing on it. I just don't understand why they have done this!"

I don't think it's meant to type while playing a game (and why would you?) but just a (cheap?) alternative to a USB or bluetooth keyboard for webbrowsing and probably home.

*Checks to see if he is right about CARL05*

Yep, as usual. An XBL gamertag. This is actually quite a fun game LOL

The reverse of course also applies to you.
  • Chufty #23 4 years ago

This must, surely, only exist for the people who don't realise you can plug any old keyboard into the PS3?

And you can bet it's not cheap either.
  • BartonFink #24 4 years ago

Yet another bad placement on the pad.

    Seriously that looks really awkward.
  • phatb0y #25 4 years ago

    That looks fucking awful.

In fact in the picture with it attached it looks virtually unusable.

This smacks of 'Japanese small hand' syndrome, like the original PS pad. (Grey import pads designed for people with Action Man sized hands. Aw...weren't they cute?)

Until I've used one to make an informed opinion I can't honestly see this working. Still, bloke on the internet vs R&D dept of a huge corporation...its not like Sony make fundamental design cock-ups from time to time...*cough*original Playstation lasers*cough*
  • SeesThroughAll #26 4 years ago

    Hardly an exciting accessory.

I'm better off turning my hands to a bluetooth keyboard anyway.
  • Aname #27 4 years ago

To those that are saying the positioning is bad or that it seems awkward, I couldn't disagree more. I think the idea is that change your grip on the pad and hold it with your thumbs hooking around and under the grips, freeing your fingers to type with. Try it with your pad, it's comfortable and easy.

Ok, I'll admit that the shortcut buttons for friends list and messaging look like a decent development.

But still... it looks as awkward as the 360 keypad.
  • wewillselfdestruct #29 4 years ago

See it's confusing because I want one, even though I know I'd be a buttload better off with a bluetooth keyboard. The apparently incredible invisble trackpad mentioned in the other article is a selling point though. Invisible functionality ftw!

And I imagine it has to be positioned above the thumbsticks because that's where the USB port is located on the Sixaxis/Dual Shock 3. Otherwise you'd have to have a lead going from below the thumbsticks to the port. Or use magic, if you're that way inclined.
  • Widge #30 4 years ago

well.... I suppose it does say Prototype design down the bottom and subject to change.

I certainly wouldn't be using it in my joypad grip position, you'd have to shift to use it.
  • bioreit #31 4 years ago

I have a wireless keyboard for my 360, but I still use the chatpad instead.

    1. If I get a message in-game, or need to type something out quickly, it's an absolute PITA to grab the keyboard and type something out, especially if I'm playing summat like CoD4 on Live. You can pretty much guarantee that you won't have your keyboard right next to you at all times (which, typically, will be when you most need it), whereas stick the chatpad on your no.1 controller and it's there whenever you need it.

    2. Don't need to worry about keeping *another* device charged up, as it just leeches off the controller.

    3. I'm used to the weight now and a pad feels way too light without it.

Although this Sony version looks to be a bit more difficult to use (no doubt placement was dictated by a) position of the USB port on SIXAXIS/DS3 as opposed to mic on 360 pad and b) design/marketing guys striving for as much difference from MS as possible), I'd imagine you'd get used to it pretty quick, then wonder what all the fuss was about. And the mouse input is a cool touch.

/wishes MS would implement a web browser for 360. Maybe then full mouse/KB would be harder to avoid...
