PlayStation 3 tops 3 million UK sales

Most of them sold in the last six months.

The PlayStation 3 has now sold over 3 million units here in the UK.

That means there's been a significant leap of 800,000 units since July 2009, when the console had reached 2.2 million sales.

But there's still catching up to do, as early last December the Wii had sold six million units in the UK and, as of last July, the Xbox 360 had sold 3.9 million units.

Worldwide sales of the PlayStation 3 are now at 27 million, according to Sony's business-time website.

Microsoft said at CES earlier this month that the Xbox 360 has passed 39 million sales worldwide, while the Wii has sold over 56 million units globally.

I'll be adding to those sales within the next three weeks, I want MAG, I want Heavy Rain and I bloody want GOW3. I can't hold off the inevitable for much longer.

"Microsoft said at CES earlier this month that the Xbox 360 has passed 39 million sales worldwide, while the Wii has sold over 56 million units globally. "

...initially I read that as MS telling us how well the Wii is doing (smacks forehead)
  • alcides #3 2 years ago

They still haven't put a number on Q3, which was christmas. It's weird how such number vary according to the source... Well, SONY's website's figures are for sure at least.
  • jonthepymm #4 2 years ago

I agree with alcides - sources vary somewhat. Wikipedia has PS3 at 27 million, XBox 360 at 34 million and Wii at 50 million - all stats as at October 2009 on [link url=http://en.w ikipedia.org/wiki/Console_wars
    ]http://en.w ikipedia.org/wiki/Console_wars
    [/link]

By that reckoning PS3 is somewhat closer to XBox 360...
  • Dizzy #5 2 years ago

"I wonder if by the end of this year, the PS3 and 360 sales will even out at roughly the same for each? "

Errrr? The ps3 would gave to outsell the Wii to catchup in just one year.
  • dsmx #6 2 years ago

Count me as one of those who got a ps3, I got one on Tuesday this week. So far I'm very pleased with the purchase.
  • andijames #7 2 years ago

All the figures are kind of relative to the console's release date though surely? End of the day i still think those numbers are pretty impressive for all consoles considering we're in a so called recession.

So it started selling better after the price cut. Who would have thought. I guess its finally reached its tipping point where the price is right for all those who have been holding off getting one.
  • woodnotes #9 2 years ago

800k of 3 million isn't "most of them".
  • EmiliasHorse #10 2 years ago

So how many 360's sold in the last 6 months? 3.9m in July what now?....tell me, I am bored and need to know things.

  • MeBrains #11 2 years ago

if you're bored, then browse around on vgchartz. all numbers readily available. indicative of course...
  • GamesConnoisseur #12 2 years ago

Good for Sony and for PS3 to catch up to X360 never mind the touching distance of Wii! Still interested how many people are using PS3 as BD player purely or as a gaming device?

Longer run of attach rates on PS3/X360 would be telling, still Sony did markets PS3 as all in one entertainment hub so that is an advantage.
  • PoundHound #13 2 years ago

I'm one of that number. Played Uncharted 2, which was the best game on any console (that I played) last year and haven't touched it since! I think my next purchase will be GoW3, but with Bayonetta, Dante's Inferno and Darksiders all played in the interim, will I be hack n' slashed out?
  • FladgeMangle #14 2 years ago

Eurogamer, your face-offs are not working! :o)

In the spirit of balance, Microsoft is still ahead by quite a margin. Maybe not by the amount that some down-markers on this thread would like though...

Worth noting that MS's CES figures included the all-important Q3 (Oct-Dec), while Sony and Nintendo have yet to disclose theirs officially. The PS3 and 360 are basically 5-6 million units apart up to date. Both playing second fiddle to the Wii of course.

Wheras the lone PS3 owner in my office is constantly ridiculed as the other 7 gamers in the team all own a 360.
  • sarcasmoidosis #20 2 years ago

PS3 will probably continue its sales growth over the next few months as more and more people are thinking about it, due to the titles that are coming and the fact that it's at a good price.

Sony's catching up, but it won't even out by the end of this gen (2012 is my best guess as the final year for these consoles) even if the ratio is 27 mil to 34. Not even if Arc will rule and Natal will suck. 7 million is too much.
  • monkeywithnoeyes #21 2 years ago

@GamesConnoisseur, not really "caught up" with the 360 though has it if the 360's almost a million ahead of it.
    Edited by 1 at 22/01/10 @ 19:24
  • BadBoyBonner #22 2 years ago

No doubt quite a few of the sales are from people, like me, who already own a 360 and Wii.

Sales that would have gone to a new console had one come out. It hasn't, so might as well pick up a PS3.

Obviously the 360 will not benefit to the same degree as it came out before the other two.

More so when you also factor in the blinkered SONY stalwarts who seem to be a fan of the SONY brand as much as gaming itself.
  • BartonFink #23 2 years ago

So it will catch up on 360 in about 2015 and Wii in about 2067 then?
  • Diomedes #24 2 years ago

Uh ,the PS3 was at 27 million by end september ,so right now it should be at least 33 million and probably 34.
  • CallousB #25 2 years ago

Wii was at 56 million at the end of September (that comes direct from Nintendo).

Since then they have sold 1 million in Japan and 5.5 million in the US.

That brings it up to 62.5 million + whatever it sold in Europe/rest of the world from Sept onwards. You're probably looking at 65-68 million Wii's worldwide now.

  • BartonFink #26 2 years ago

    But it's Wii who cares
  • Emmit_Assassin #27 2 years ago

Initially I thought the PS3 was catching up, but then I realised that the 360 was out a year before the PS3 and its only 900,000 units ahead. And if the PS3 sold 800,000 in the last month, then its not just catching up, its overtaking the 360. Obviously it won't sell that many month on month from now on, but surely they are on a par now at least?
I agree with captainrentboy, I'm not sure I can hold off any longer. I love my 360, but I'm no fanboy, and I'll go where the good games are. I just wish I could find some way to pay to have both....
  • darc #28 2 years ago

Yup, I added a PS3 to my collection, just as I said I would once the price got sane - which it did w/ the $299 slim this winter.

I'd long wanted a PS3 to see what all the Uncharted hype was about, and when I finally got my copy of Uncharted 2, I was pretty underwhelmed. Yes, I know I'm the only one in the world who thinks so ("-" button top right) but I think Uncharted was over-rated. Yes, it's very good looking, but it just doesn't strike me as being even remotely original, and the gaming press seems to have given it a pass on faults they'd thrash other games for (eg. quick time events, occasional camera issues, strange difficulty spikes in a mostly embarrassingly easy game, etc.) I don't know it's too much of a set-piece game for me I think, half the time I scarcely feel like I'm playing it. Pretty though. Except for Chloe - weird eyes on that one...

The good news is I was also curious about Demon's Souls, and that's been enough fun to justify the purchase on its own. And I'm sure there will be other good exclusives this year. Looking forward to Heavy Rain. (Ironic, maybe, as it will probably be even more set piece and QTE-leaning than Uncharted. But content-wise it seems like something new.)

I'd tend toward the XBox versions for all the multi-platform releases, but I've still got to say I'm really impressed with the PS3 Slim from hardware perspective. It's small, classy-looking, quiet, it has an embedded power supply with nice standard cables, internal WiFi... just a better form-factor overall. At the new price it gives the 360 a run for its money. Its just a shame they couldn't have addressed the video memory oversight from the original design and allowed devs to patch to auto-detect, to add cheap AA or improve framerates or whatever.

Glad to have both. And lately the Wii's been getting me "Wii Active" so I guess that's fine too. Man I'm a spoiled brat.

Just rambling on a Friday afternoon...
  • TRUTH #29 2 years ago

Every time I walk into a game shop, I always notice people people crowded in the 360 section with the odd person in the PS3 section. With Wii usually crowded with Wii fit in there hands!
  • electrolite #30 2 years ago

I love PS3-360 threads, I really do. Arguing over 2nd place, citing entirely anecdotal evidence, citing VG Chartz, trying to pretend the Wii doesn't exist. It's great chuckles. (I own a PS3, I just couldn't give a toss about the "battle";)
  • TAPNGO #31 2 years ago

who trusts VG Chartz they change their numbers when they're wrong.
  • sarcasmoidosis #32 2 years ago

"who trusts VG Chartz they change their numbers when they're wrong."

    Shouldn't they?

But yeah, VG Chartz's method (taking a few actual numbers and applying statistical formulas to get the "big picture";) is not accurate at all. And I don't even know why they list the games on PC, since they all sold 0.0m...
  • GreyBeard #33 2 years ago

Sony should be looking at around 35-36m by the end of the Financial year. And that's assuming an uplift of around 40% YoY for the 2 quarters unlisted on their corporate site. Possibly higher given that their previous performance across Q3/Q4 has been in the 6-7 million range.

Its quite the turnaround given the beating MS dealt out with their price cut. Q4 2008/Q1 2009 were brutal.

Unless you hold shares in either company who cares! It's not as is when the PS3 catches up with the 360, it will suddenly become obsolete and unable to play games. Owners of both the PS3 and the 360 should both be happy as they are both really starting to release some classic games!

Personally, the only figures that matter are those in a specific time frame. Of course the consoles out longer will have more units sold.
  • flippet #37 2 years ago

I seem to be reading a different set of statistics to half those commenting.

Current PS3 figures are still nearly a million off 360's sales of 6 months ago in UK, yet people are talking of PS3 as though it's nearly caught up?

Emmit_Assassin somehow even managed discover PS3 sold 800,000 units in the last month :o
  • coolbritannia #38 2 years ago

fucking hell Goodfella, still the rabid PS3 fanboy after all this time? who gives a shit?
  • dsmx #39 2 years ago

It would also be nice if sony actually advertised more about what you can do for free on the ps3, there's actually quite a lot of free games to play on home which never seems to get mentioned that much, red bull section is good fun. Also the music video app is a nice addition. Home needs more love.
  • MDL199 #40 2 years ago

Way to go PS3 and some much deserved success.

I own a PS3 and a 360 and although as far as games are concerned it's now pretty even, as a piece of hardware the PS3 is streets ahead.

The PS3 feels like a quality piece of kit and is so quiet where as the 360 is cheap, temperamental and the noisiest console of all time.
  • metalgearsolid4rox #41 2 years ago

Eurogamer, your 27 million PS3 sold figure "now" is incorrect. That link adds up to 27 million, yes. But thats at the end of the Q2 in the 2009 Fiscal year(September 2009)
The Q3 totals has not been added (October to December , I think). So right now it should be about 31-32 million atleast.
  • StooMonster #42 2 years ago

sarcasmoidosis: VG Chartz's method (taking a few actual numbers and applying statistical formulas to get the "big picture";) is not accurate at all.

It's not VG Chartz method, there's a standard statistical approach to extrapolating samples as one cannot get the entire population for analysis. That's how we get TV ratings etc. You appear to be saying that all statistics are wrong. :|

    MDL99

I got both consoles too!...PS3 is nothing that much above or better then 360!, I find a lot of PS3 fans (as yourself) have a shock when they see that 360 is very much matches the PS3 and some areas excells (vice versa). I noticed this is usually happens when PS fans (like my friends) have fixed I idea that Sony is the best at everything (Fact IT IS NOT!), yet when showing these buddies of mine a 360 there comments are usually 'SHIT! The 360 pretty dam cool' - (showed them Sky, Last Fm, Twitter, Facebook, 1080p HD instant stream movies then watched with friends using our avatars and online gaming, also how simple it is - a;so showed them games like: MW2, Bayonetta, GTA 'BOGT', Dead Space, Fallout 3, FN 4, Borderlands - where infact they admitted that the online is so much better and simpler, also more fun and options inc voice, twiiter, facebook, avatars etc etc, but also MW2, Dead Space, Fight Night 4 did actually look better for a reason they noticed with sharper depth color and texture and lighting)

The fact is PS3 is great a machine, but it's not a leap that you call it the best!...I prefer my 360 myself, though my fav game is on PS3 (Demon's Souls); but I haven't seen anything that tells me that the 360 can't match!...With Natel I think things will actually be interesting for 360 in 2010!

  • sarcasmoidosis #45 2 years ago

"there's a standard statistical approach to extrapolating samples as one cannot get the entire population for analysis"

Of course, but it's usually made taking samples from various areas and then creating a final "approximate" for those areas only. VGChartz samples some stores (very few) in certain areas and then uses statistical formulas to generate worldwide figures. Which leads to them being incorrect. Add to that the fact that they don't properly update their data and you get the final result. They're good to look at if you don't have any other source, but nothing more.
  • darren1976 #46 2 years ago

Similar experience to darc (post 32) with my PS3 Slim. I also have a 360 but I am not a fanboy and will buy a console if there is must have game on it (and I can afford it of course!). Initially got PS3 Slim 250Gb Unchartered 2 bundle, Killzone 2 and Wipeout.

I am happy with my purchase, Blu-ray playback is good, and the BBC iPlayer is great. Wipeout is really good, if I'm honest it was the main reason I was interested in getting the PS3 and Unchartered 2 tipped the balance. But strangely I have hardly played that game. Graphically I was actually surprised me, it's great looking dont get me wrong, but I was expecting to be blown away and I wasn't. The reason being is the slightly inferior textures on PS3 is really noticeable to me. I am sure that once I complete the game I will come away thinking what a great game. Killzone 2 on the other hand I have played up until the boss battle with general whatshisname in a big hall. Killzone is a great looking game but again the textures are nothing great and I can't help but notice it. The lightling is really good and the art design is great also (something PS games often have) but the DualShock3 is not a great pad in comparison to the 360 and I am no where near as accurate with it.

The game I have most enjoyed on PS3 is Demon Souls (I picked up a 2nd hand chinese copy but has the English text and voices) which again I noticed the textures straight away which left my initial impressions subdued, but after playing for a couple of hours forgot about it as the uniqueness of the game came to the fore. This is the reason I have bought a PS3, the slightly more obscure style of game that Sony has always been good at supporting.

I still play my 360 much more because of the quality of Live over PSN which quitely frankly needs to step up but without fees it ain't going to happen. But I think the PS3 is definately worth a purchase now, and I expect there are lot like me that will have both now. But sony please improve the pad!
  • WayMucho #47 2 years ago

I'm one of the new-ish owners having picked up the Slim when i got a new phone contract - i decided to sacrifice a good phone for a free PS3. Very nice peice of kit but i think the 360 edges it for me (as a gaming machine) mostly because i prefer the controller and exclusives. I think i will still get most games on the 360, but - if you can afford it - it's so mcuh better having both systems

The Ps3 has had a great year and rightly so - great exclusives and price drop has brought it too close to the Elite for MS. But i think the 360 may have the edge this year in terms of exclusives and i think Natal is the more impressive gimmick. Sales numbers don't really matter to me - all 3 machines are well established and both of these machines have strong games sales

Also have to agree with Darren above - Unchartered was a little bit of a disappointment to me. A very fine game, but certainly not the best of the generation in any way.

Gotta laugh at all of the Ps3 I got one but no games stuff, evn one user witha gemer scrore of 25000.

PS3 first party stuff is vgood MGS4, U2 etc are better than anything on 360 when sony first party put effort in. Maks me wonder on some of the claimed ownership statements in this thread.

However, love the system link and coop better on Xbox, and my firefight, crackdown etc. And yes any unreal / general multipat does run better and so people should own both...

Controller- Xbox tiggers are better, but the Ps3 D pad atually works and analogue sticks are accurate, so 6 an 2 3's as the say, it depends on the game. Anyone who says one is standout better than the other probably does not play alot of games on both.

Dont give a damn about live or PSN, both allow multiplayer, but hate lag and both have it unless good servers which most games do not have, so usualy only play coop games (best is Halo ODST and U2 COOP and COD WAW and crackdown).

Like the NXE install, but with had a bigger than 80 GB disk. PS3 installs suck, but with 320 GB who cares...Swings and round abouts all the time.

Twitter, facebook, Iplayer whatever, use your PC...

I kinda see them as equal. Wish you could combine the best of both really.

Valkyria Chronicles looks nice, but it's not all that by itself.
  • Badassbab #52 2 years ago

    Post 52,

Out of the disadvantages I noticed when I got my PS3 compared to the 360 were the inferior textures and though quincux does a nice job of smoothing off the edges I don't like the blurred textures it creates giving the games a dull, flat washed out look and a lot of PS3 games use quincux filtering. But then again to me at least UC2 is the best looking game out there. As for KZ2, not a bad game but again it uses 'blur every texture' quincux as well as some lo res textures and since it's such a technically demanding game, there are a lot of frame rate dips here and there. And I don't like the controls. Still I'm going through all the exclusives, just completed Valkyria Chronicles which is excellent. I bought it for the exclusives and it's worth it and Blu Ray is a nice bonus. Sony games definately feel more arty almost like it's more grown up though I didn't like MGS4 which is so overrated.

I think it's coming to the time where if you were an early adopter of either console (but specifically the 360 since it's been out longer) you're starting to think about buying the other one too since there's no mention of the next generation yet and it seems like this one will go on for quite a while.

I just bought a PS3 myself as I feel I can justify a console every three years. The Blu-Ray is fantastic and it's nice to be able to get my hands on UC2 and Little Big Planet. I'm not sure what I'll do when the next Fifa or whatever multi-platform comes out. Even if the performance is better on the 360 it's damn nice to play a console that doesn't sound like a vacuum cleaner so I might opt for the PS3 version!
  • juknju #54 2 years ago

I gotta say the PS3 and the 360 are about on par with each other. You have to pay for Live-which sucks-, but it's far better than PSN. The PS3 has superior hardware, but it's seldom used (only a few exclusives actually take advantage of the blu-ray capabilities. Otherwise a 360 with HDMI output will look the same as a PS3 with HDMI output) and as the consumer WE have to pay for it. The 360 doesn't have built-in wireless and the console's loud. There are pros and cons to each system but bottom line: you get the same bang for the buck. The Wii on the other hand just sucks IMO. At least for hardcore gamers (and by 'hardcore gamers' I mean people who actually pay attention to the quality of the games they buy). And has anyone noticed that the best games for the Wii (Zelda, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Bros. etc) hardly use the Wiimote (in Super Mario Galaxy you use the Wiimote to point at gems and use them a currency, lol what a waste of money; paying for that shitty technology). Yeah, and Uncharted 2 is a little over rated and Halo 3 was too. The sky is blue. Peace.
  • darren1976 #55 2 years ago

Certainly anyone thinking of getting 360 should definately get the elite, that way you have room to install games to the HDD and negate the loud fan noise.

In terms of multi-platform releases if it has a large multiplayer component I will buy the 360 version everytime due to how ingrained I am into the whole Live experience, unless the PS3 version is technically superior but in majority of cases still seems that 360 has the edge. I know some say PS3 is a better a piece of hardware and certainly as a piece of HiFi equipment you can make an argument for this (built in WiFi, Dolby 7.1, Bluray, web browser, BBC iPlayer (which I love) quieter fan noise etc) but from a purely gaming you can make a strong argument for the older and supposedly technically inferior xbox due to its better texture handling and apparent ability to run games (cross platform) at a smoother framerate. Even the exclusives on PS3 suffer from the PS3s poorer texture handling. In spite of this as I mentioned earlier even I have bought a PS3 because of the originality of some of the titles Sony is pushing out!

If you can afford it get both (I sold my Wii!). In 2010 I am looking forward to:
Modnation racers (It is about time a Mario Kart style game produced on non ninty console and this looks like it could do),
Mag (again interested to see how large server games run (a disadvantage of the strict limit on number players on Live),
GoW 3, Rejigged GoW 1+2 (sold my PS2 by time these came out originally but so many PS fans can't be wrong so expecting big things from these),
GT5 (very disappointed by the demo, and I have to be honest last GT I enjoyed GT3 but given the dev time this has to be good, just sort the AI!),
The Last Guardian (only ever played demo of ICO but very interested in what this new game will be like),
Formula 1 2010 (big F1 fan, Codies better not have some stupid arcade physics model a la Grid)
Mass Effect 2 (I really liked first one but not as much as KOTOR and there were some tech issues, unfortuneately I deleted my old Mass Effect save, what a prat),
Fifa 10 (Fifa 9 finally converted me from PES after over 10 years and it might be another 10 years before I revert back!),
    Super Street Fighter 4,
Battlefield Bad Company 2 (I love Modern Warfare Multiplayer but it is a bit hectic at times, something more tactical ala GRAW would be nice),
Alien v Predator, (looks awesome but I may be too scared to complete it),
Alan Wake (similar to GT5, been in dev so long that it has to worth a look),
Red Dead Redemption (possibly most anticipate game for me, I love Westerns, I hope there is a Clint Eastwood cameo in there!),
Halo Reach, (I love a bit of Sci Fi and Halo does it better than most. Hoping Reach gfx engine will be significant step up from Halo 3/ODST which is looking slightly jaded now),
Metro 2033 (loverd Fallout 3, sure I will love this).

Right quite a long post, doubt anbyone has got down this far but anyone else looking forward to games not on this list? Any obscure Jap PS3 titles worth a look?

I've always been a die hard Ps3 fan. However, the reported issues with the Ps3 version of Bayonetta was the last draw for me so I decided to buy a cheap arcade Xbox360 to play this game. I was suprised to find out that the Xbox360 had better graphics on most of the games then the Ps3 system that I got at launch. The Ps3 system tended to always have the more washed out looking graphics. As a Ps3 fan, it pains me to say this but the graphics of the cheap system that I purchased are equal or even superior than most of the graphics on the Ps3 system. I haven't used the Ps3 for gaming too much since I got the Xbox360. This is really sad. Except for Sony's exclusive titles, I find myself buying most of my games for the Xbox360. The Ps3 system still has the better hardware but the gaming experience is better on the Xbox360. It will be interesting to see if Sony can keep it's sales momentum going. More people are starting to take notice of Ps3's exclusive titles coming out.

Erm... Didn't the PS brand have a broad range of killer apps? Tomb Raider. Final Fantasy. Resident Evil. Metal gear Solid. ICO/SotC. Uncharted. Gran Turismo - To name a few. Admittedly some came from other systems while others went multiplatform after a while.

Anyone who claims to own a PS3 but says they haven't played on it for 8 months or they are still waiting for a good PS3 exclusive are either lying or xbots.

"Erm... Didn't the PS brand have a broad range of killer apps?"

But that might be the point he was trying to make (I admit that I'm giving about as much my own interpretation of his words as you do). PS has always been aimed at a diverse audience. I believe MS wanted something similar with Xbox but due to the fact that Halo ended up targeting/creating a niche market rather successfully, Xbox became the shooter/driving fan console.

So yeah, PS has/had a couple of rather diverse franchises that sold in huge numbers but nothing that resonated as much with its whole audience as Xbox has with Halo.

"Unchartered 2 tipped the balance. But strangely I have hardly played that game. Graphically I was actually surprised me, it's great looking dont get me wrong, but I was expecting to be blown away and I wasn't."

Exactly the same reaction. Glad I'm not taking crazy pills over here.

If you buy your games new then the expense of another console doesn't look that bad. I really don't get why people who dont buy a second console and are over the age of 15 get so defensive of one or the other, and ridiculing someone for owning a different console is just plain stupid.

In terms of actual graphics not developer decisions the only thing that pains me on ps3 is the lack of anti aliasing but you do get used to it.

Besides it's ironic that at this point I have spent twice as much on 360's as I have on one PS3.
