Xbox 360 PlayStation 3 News by Robert Purchese

19 August, 2009

Codemasters has told Eurogamer there will be a DiRT 2 demo on PSN and Xbox Live tomorrow.

The big draw will be a sample of the eight-player online mayhem, although a single-player snippet awaits, as well.

Snatch a peek of the game designer's best lap to see what the demo offers.

Colin McRae: DiRT 2 is out on 11th September for DS, PS3, PSP, Wii and Xbox 360. A PC version will follow.

Check out our recent Eurogamer TV DiRT 2 special, or our hands-on impressions of DiRT 2 to find out more.

I got bored of the first one about a third of the way through. Like the look of the new one, but would probably barely play it, so i think i'd be better off just passing altogether.

Already have this pre-ordered. Hopefully the demo will not give me a reason to cancel that pre-order :)

Pleasant surprise! Didn't get DiRT... one fo the main reasons was that the demo felt awful with the MS wheel... hopefully this one will be better - the videos look great!

That was unexpected. Looks like I'll only by test driving the PS3 version though even though it's the 360 version I have pre-ordered. The 360 version, which I suspect will be the marginally better version, will have to wait until next week. :(

@evilfoxhound - GRID, which came out after DiRT, was slightly better graphically on the 360 though with better AA (always a weak area on the PS3 anyway) and far less screen tearing. DiRT on the PS3 had an extra six months of development and the improvements made to reduce screen tearing to noticeable effect meant compromises were made elsewhere, namely the environmental detail. It ran better, yes, but then so it should have.

DiRT 2 is coming out at the same time on both platforms so unless Codemasters have found a way to implement 4X AA with no performance penalty on the PS3 then I suspect the 360 version will have the same advantages GRID did. I'm sure Richard Leadbetter will let us know. Regardless I've pre-ordered the 360 version on that basis and because I prefer its controller for racing games (the triggers are superior IMO).

I'll try it (any excuse to use the new Wheel), but from what I've seen (and what I've played of the 1st) I know I'll hate it. Besides, any rally game calling cars "my rides" isn't to be taken seriously by anyone non american or over 12.

Could be wrong though...

looks excellent glad they released a demo on both systems as i get a chance to compare which is visually the one to get(360s probably) EVILFOXHOUND dirt was better(FPS) because they got extra time to develope on ps3 .GRID on ps3 was quite a bit inferior to the 360 game as its a more graphically advanced engine than DIRT.maybe they have sorted it now, well see tomoz ?

i smell a 6/7 out of ten

the driving model is still as shit as DiRT

face it , they sold out to big wallet american grafx whore corporations.

incidentally, has anyone ever tried the realism mod for DirT 1 PC? helps the game a lot, not quite RBR, but goes some way...

wow that video is horrendous!! NO time or damage penalties for going completely off track, into the rocks and bushes, seriously?? what the hell is the point of having a track if you make it so easy to just cut right across the desert and straight to the finish? unbelievable, it's as if they've never watched any rally videos!

[edit] 26 bushes he drove straight through... large green bushes, at least a few of which were taller than the bloody car! in real rally just one of those bushes would probably end your race.

Will be interesting to see how close I can go to the competition time, most likely no way near!

I've been playing the 360 demo online and offline most the day, absolutely fantastic game!

Graphics are amazing, framerate rock solid (although i had some lag in one online baja race), controls are much improved, car feels heavier, no screen tearing at all even at 1080P, the menu's are class too!

Already pre-ordered, make sure you all try the demo!

The handling is much improved over Dirt (hello Oversteer!) but the presentation leaves me wanting to shoot everyone at Codemasters in the kneecaps.

Get past the US style presentation and you'll find a game that gets back to the old Colin McRae ways.

Gameplay is nice, although in Morocco it feels more like driving on ICE, then dust and touch the brakes and the car become pretty uncontrollable. The GFX are rock solid on PS3.
But the presentation is poop and American advice grating. I still haven't figured out how to turn off muzik.

Probably a miss unless I can pick it up DIRT cheap.

Grating commentary, mis-fitting music, graffiti fonts, fireworks at the side of the track.....I really couldn't take any more after 10 mins. Seems much the same as before but with added annoyance. Don't think I can be arsed with it...time to check out Sturmovik.
